On the western side of the Eastern Cordillera, the deposits are linked by tear faults and associated thrusts developed during a compressive tectonic phase that occurred at the time of the Eocene- Oligocene boundary, prior to the major uplift of the Cordillera during the Andean phase (middle Miocene). On the eastern side of the Cordillera, emerald mineralization occurred earlier, at the time of the Cretaceous-Tertiaryboundary, during a thin-skinned extensional tectonic event linked to evaporite dissolution. This event predates the Andean phase, during which this part of the chain was folded and thrust over the Llanos foreland. [email protected] ; [email protected] Abstract . Thunnosaurian ichthyosaurs represent the paradigm of reptilian body designed for a pelagic life style. Most derived thunnosaurian, the ophthalmosaurids, have been traditionally considered as members of a declining lineage. New findings and the re-examination of histori - cal collections radically changed our conceptions about them. Opthalmosaurids were ecologically more diverse than previously thought. The past few decades have seen an increase of nominal species spurred by new findings and analyses. A still unresolved problem is that many species are only known by their holotypes. Nevertheless, morphological disparity is a compelling argument for considering them as valid. All recent cladistic analyses of ichthyosaurs recover ophthalmosaurids as a clade. Neither the addition of new information nor the addition of new enti ties resulted in its collapse. On this basis, the assignment of Linnaean rank to this clade (Ophtalmosauridae) is reasonable as it satisfied the primary recommended criteria for taxa naming: monophyly and stability. As the lists of species and genus names are used as input in major data bases for interpreting major turnover and/or extinction patterns, efforts must be focused on clarifying as much as possible the alpha tax onomy. Two major pending issues are the delimitation of Ophthalmosaurus -Baptanodon, and Platypterygius . -

After a detailed study of its morphological characteristics, Colombia. it is evident that the new specimen represents a new genus and species of brachauchenine pliosaurid from Central Colombia that we name Sachicasaurus vitae gen. et sp. nov. Sachicasaurus is a large derived brachauchenine (almost 10 m in length) characterized by two autopomorphic characters: a very short mandibular symphysis ending at the mid length of the fourth mandibular alveoli and reduced number of mandibular teeth (17-18). It is also distinguished by the following combination of characters: skull exceeding two meters in length, lateral expansion of the maxilla posterior to the premaxilla-maxilla suture, presence of caniniform teeth, dental sequence showing only two non- contiguous largest teeth (D4, Mx1), pineal foramen in a very anterior position, vomer bifurcated posteriorly, palatines separated in the midline by the pterygoids, slender hyoid bones, 12 cervical vertebrae, cervical centra without dorsal but with ventral foramina, single rib facet in all cervical centra, at least 37 pre-sacral vertebrae, and ilium with a long posterior projection. -

Extinction of Fish-Shaped Marine Reptiles Associated with Reduced

Arkhangelsky4,5 & Matt Friedman1 Despite their profound adaptations to the aquatic realm and their apparent success throughout the Triassic and the Jurassic, ichthyosaurs became extinct roughly 30 million years before the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Current hypotheses for this early demise involve relatively minor biotic events, but are at odds with recent understanding of the ichthyosaur fossil record. Here, we show that ichthyosaurs maintained high but diminishing richness and disparity throughout the Early Cretaceous. The last ichthyosaurs are characterized by reduced rates of origination and phenotypic evolution and their elevated extinction rates correlate with increased environmental volatility. In addition, we find that ichthyosaurs suffered from a profound Early Cenomanian extinction that reduced their ecological diversity, likely contributing to their final extinction at the end of the Cenomanian.
