According to some, a Cross was unearthed from the Kuhikkattukon locality and placed there. Unbelievably, a heavy downpour occurred the same night in the locality and once the rain subsided the Cross was found floating in a nearby the present Church Mapranam. It was immediately placed near the same well – the present sanctity. Another popular belief is that local rulers of the region were always involved in territorial disputes and civil wars. It is said that some of the rulers engaged “Nasranis” (Christians) to face the challenges they experienced and as a token of their service, built the Church and handed over to them. Yet another belief is associated with Trade. It is said that a port, named Konthipulam on the Eastern part of the locality was open for trade and commerce. The ruling King allowed “Christians” to conduct trade in the region and as a token of service allotted the ground to build the sanctum. Yet another saying is that the King, during hunting, found a Cross and allotted the ground to build the sanctum. Another belief is associated with Tippu Sulthan - a renowned warrior and ruler. It is believed that Tippu persuaded an outcaste Namboothiri to loot the riches of the locality. Tippu looted the riches, but was scared of the Holiness of the Cross, exempted the Church and the “Nasranis” from his blitz. The main feast of the Shrine is the Exaltation of Holy Cross. It is the traditional custom of the church where around 500 Octave worshippers light the candles which weights 1 to 300 kg. on 13 September-the eve of the main feast of the church (The Procession Exaltation of The Cross) of every year and yearly about 3,00,000 worshippers light the candles for they have received blessings from the Holy Cross. IDRBT AWARD Dr. Y.V. Reddy, RBI Governor Presents IDRBT Award. 100 per cent Core Banking Mr. N.R. Narayana Moorthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies declares SIB as 100 per cent CBS enabled 500th Branch Ms. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi inaugurating 500th Branch Dear Patrons & Well Wishers, Someone once said “If you add a little to a little and do this often, soon the little will become great”. South Indian Bank as it ushers in its 80th year of service to the community is the very epitome of this quotation. From its humble beginnings in 1929, the bank has grown from strength to strength in delivering outstanding value to its customers and creating a name for itself in the banking arena. With an initial paid up capital of Rs 22000, the bank has now grown into an organization with a business of Rs 27000 crores, presence in 23 states and 520 branches, truly making it a force to reckon with amongst the banks in the country. “ ... little will become great ” The journey over the last 80 years has not been without its fair share of difficulties, but our bank has always endeavoured to ensure that the basic epithet of customer service was never compromised. Our achievements are a glowing testimonial of the confidence and the trust which we enjoy with our customers. We have been pioneers right from being the first private sector bank to open a NRI branch as well as being the first to start an Industrial Finance branch in 1993. We have been ahead of the curve in taking cognisance of the importance of technology and achieved 100% implementation of the Core Banking Solution in 2007.

Apart from the fact that it is the first systematic attempt as far as Kerala is concerned, its particular value lay in presenting a record of these rapidly vanishing cultural heritage. The Census report on fairs and festivals consists of two publications, Part VII B (i), Fairs and Festivals of Kerala containing the descriptive portion and Part VII B (ii), Fairs and Festivals of Kerala-Statements giving the tables relating to the fairs and festivals. The first part has already been published in 1966. It is the second part that is presented in this book. This publication is entirely a compilation of the statements furnished by various agencies like the Departments of Health Services, Police, Local Bodies, Revenue and the Devaswom Boards of Travancore and Cochin. This is something like a directory of fairs and festivals in the State arranged according to di'>tricts and taluks, which might excite the curiosity of the scholars who are interested in investigating the religiou, centres and festivals.

  • Muriyad Wetlands: Ecological Changes and Human Consequences
MURIYAD WETLANDS: ECOLOGICAL CHANGES AND HUMAN CONSEQUENCES Project report submitted to Kerala Research Programme on Local Development, Centre for Developmental Studies, Thiruvanandapuram Principal Investigator Dr. John Thomas K. Department of Zoology, Christ College, Irinjalakuda Co-investigators: Dr. Sreekumar S. Department of Geology, Christ College, Irinjalakuda and Dr. Jaya Cheriyan Department of Social Works, Vimala College Thrissur December 2003 Christ College Irinajakuda 680 125, Kerala Preface Wetland forms an important ecosystem essential for existence of life on earth. Floodplains of rivers and vicinities of wetlands are considered as the cradle of human civilisation. However we treat them with indifference rather thanwith care. As urbanization increased, the wetland also started vanishing. The people who had damaged the wetlands have already begun to pay the price in terms of scarcity of water, flooding, polluting, and toppling the micro climatic pattern. This report discusses in detail about thevarious threats faced by the Muriyad wetland system, which forms part of Vembanad-Kol, a Ramsar site. The introductory chapter gives a general description of the study area; objectives, general methodology of study, and the relevance of the investigations. Detailed methodology employed for specific area of study is explained in the beginning of each chapter. The Second chapter is a review of literature on wetland related studies. Third chapter is devoted to geo environmental appraisal and the fourth chapter describes the biological wealth of Muriyad wetlands. The impacts of the change in the socio economic perspectives of the human community on the ecology of the wetland are discussed in chapter five. The last chapter is exclusively devoted for consolidation of the outcome of the present investigations and suggestions for the conservation and management of Muriyad wetland.
