DENVER BRONCOS QUOTES (10/26/11)

QUARTERBACK

On the Miami game “It was good to get a win, that’s for sure, but there are a lot of areas where we can get better and I can get better, especially in those first three quarters. The good thing was with so many plays and so many different drives, it was something that was so little that we were close to—taking the lead—just having a two score lead in that game. We were moving the ball pretty well compared to how it looked. We just have to finish drives and be better on third down mainly.”

On watching the film “Some things were better. Some things were really close, and some areas we just have room for improvement. We have to go out there and work hard. I felt like today we made some good strides with timing, with precision, with just little things. I think that was very encouraging, and I think we’ve got to continue that every day.”

On being close to making plays “The one to [WR ] ‘Deck,’ I know I had, and more than anything it wasn’t an issue of it came out of my hand a little too far, it was my decision-making process. If I would have waited a little longer and anticipated a little bit differently than how I threw it, that’s something we ran and were able to today. That was encouraging because we’re getting that better timing and improving that with moves, with crossing patterns, with things that have to do with more timing.”

On passing or running “That goes into decision making, hence one of the hardest things. You have to be very wise when you choose to do either. I think it depends on the play. It’s going from one, to two, to three to make a play happen, or knowing the situation you throw it away, or knowing the situation you try to fit it in there like we did at the end of the game to [TE] Daniel Fells. Most of the time it’s not a ball that I try to throw, but in that situation, you have faith in that guy to go out there and make that phenomenal play. It just plays into you being a great decision maker which I’m trying to improve on every day.”

On Detroit’s defense “I think that’s a great challenge. They do have a great defense, a great front seven, and their front four gets off the ball. I’m excited about it. I think it will be fun, and it will be a great challenge.”

On RB Willis McGahee “We have running backs that will step up just like they did in the game. They came in and had chip-blocks, and they worked hard. [RB] Knowshon [Moreno] and [RB] Lance [Ball] and those guys are going to step up and play well.”

On if he will more if McGahee doesn’t play “I’ll do whatever they ask me to do, and I will do it with all my heart for 60 minutes or longer.”

On being sacked “Obviously we don’t want to give up [six] sacks. You, obviously, don’t want to get hit and sacked [six] times, but part of it is me making better decisions, getting the ball out of my hands, maybe throwing some of them away. Physically I was fine and came out of that game feeling good. Anytime you have a win like that, I think it makes anything feel a little better. I think, obviously, you want to be smart with how much you get hit, but every is going to get hit in this league.”

On playing better at the end of the game “I think we definitely need to start faster in the first half, and if we do, it’s going to make things a lot easier on us. Especially every game I’ve started, we’ve fallen behind and had to come back. Thankfully we’ve been in a position to come back and compete there at the end, but if we start faster, it will be a lot easier on us and a lot easier on me as well. Some of that has to do with getting in more of a rhythm early and being able to kind of get things going. Just at the end of games, you know everything is on the line, so you’ve got to go and got to compete. I think having that urgency earlier is something that I can improve on.”

On what he wants to do and what the coaches want him to do “I really feel like our coaches really try to play to my strengths and coach me to my strengths and improve everything else. I want to do everything from the pocket—be a pocket passer, scramble when I have to—but more than anything be a good decision maker. I know you all probably get sick of me saying that, but that is huge.”

On attention surrounding him “I’m very thankful for the support from fans. Like I said before, I’ve played for some great organizations, the and the Denver Broncos. There is a lot of support in those two organizations.”

On his physical condition following the Miami game “I felt good. Obviously after some long plays you get a little winded, but for the most part I felt great. I played extremely hard, but still wasn’t that fatigued at the end. I felt like my conditioning was at a pretty high level, so I could really compete there at the end and continue to try to do whatever we had to do to make that comeback.”

On DT “He’s obviously a big boy, strong, very explosive. He does a lot of great things on the field. I played against some really good ones in college with [DE] and [TE] Glen Dorsey—the list can go for a while—so I think I’ve kind of seen some guys like that before. But he’s very impressive physically, and on tape as well.”

On getting to know DT Ndamukong Suh “I’ve gotten to know him through some of the awards and also with Nike. We’ve done several things together with Nike. We’ve definitely spent some time together.”

On teammates getting used to the attention he receives “That’s just something that they blow off more than anything, or we laugh about or they tease me about. It’s something that, honestly, we’ve got a much better relationship than to let anything like that get in the way.”

On the Florida-Georgia game Saturday “That’s a fun game. That stadium is one of the coolest environments in football probably, period. When it’s just orange and blue and red and black split down the middle, it’s cool. I think it’s a huge game for both teams because I think both teams still control their own destiny of getting to the SEC Championship game. I think it would be a huge win for both teams. To get to the SEC Championship game after what both teams have gone through this year would be a huge step. That will be a big game for both teams.”
