Damon Hill OBE Former Formula 1 World Champion "A living F1 legend" Damon Hill OBE, a Brish former racing driver, he was the 1996 Formula One World Champion. He is the son of the late double Formula One world champion Graham Hill. Damon now works relessly for the Brish Racing Drivers' Club and is endeavouring to retain the Brish Grand Prix at Silverstone. Peter Argetsinger 1950 -2020 Sebring, FL/Watkins Glen, NY - Peter O. Argetsinger, 69, of Sebring, Florida and Watkins Glen, New York, died peacefully on February 6 at his upstate New York home, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by Sjoukje Schipstra, his beloved wife of 45 years, and his devoted children Kimberley Argetsinger of New York City and J.C.G. Argetsinger of Los Angeles. Pete pursued a 47-year career as a professional road racing driver until his health failed last fall. He had successes on the world's major courses, initially in Europe and then in the US and South America. Starting with Formula Ford racing in Germany, he eventually won the British Championship of this series, moving to Formula Three, sports cars, sedans, as well as IMSA and Daytona prototypes. Up until his final days, he was sought after for the 2020 season as a driver and coach. Pete was a well-known figure in racing circles here and abroad, was inducted into the Road Racing Drivers' Association, and served on the governing council of the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen. Based on his extensive knowledge and experience, Pete was asked to design several race tracks. A popular speaker, he was a gifted and witty raconteur. Born to Cameron and Jean Argetsinger, February 22, 1950 in Youngstown, Ohio, Pete grew up in Burdett, New York, and graduated from Watkins Glen High School. His father founded and organized the Watkins Glen Grand Prix races, exposing Pete to racing at an early age. Pete started driving at the age of five on his dad's lap in a Packard 400.

History of F1 – 1990s Welcome to Sidepodcast’s History of F1. So far, the development of the Formula 1 World Championships has been pretty much about the cars, with a few squabbles between drivers along the way. The 1990s saw some real star talent emerging, with personalities both loveable and not so much. The 1990s were a year of change, innovation, tragedy and triumph. Team Williams introduced the first car, designed by Patrick Head, to have a semi‐automatic gearbox and traction control, but reliability was still a major problem. Eventually, Williams managed to conquer their mechanical troubles, and added more computer‐control to the car, leading to success in the next couple of years. Williams took the championship in '92 and '93, with Nigel Mansell and then Alain Prost, who had just returned from a season off. Michael Schumacher joined the Formula 1 circuit in 1991, qualifying 7th on his debut for Team Jordan, although he didn’t get past the first lap. Just one race later, he defected to Benetton. With the major players of previous seasons now retired, Schumacher was the main rival for Ayrton Senna, but it was not going to be easy. The points system changed in 1990 so that all Formula 1 races were included in the championship and a win would gain you 10 points rather than 9 points. The FIA also declared that the driver aids, such as traction control, were having a negative impact on the impression of F1. Where was the driver skill? So, the aids were banned, despite Formula 1 getting more and more exciting.

It was an Englishman, Louis S. Sanson, who designed and developed the Interlagos circuit, which opened its gates in 1940. The area was sparsely populated at the time, close to the two great water reservoirs of the city (hence the name, ‘between the lakes’) and the plans were quite ambitious including a hotel and a spa. Only the circuit was built but, of course, not in its present configuration. On May 12 1940, the track was inaugurated with 7.900 meters by then. With nearly 15,000 spectators watching, Arthur Nascimento Jr. won the race driving an Alfa Romeo. Our very beloved Chico Landi arrived in second place driving a Maserati. He kept racing at the circuit until his retirement in 1974. The first international race was held in 1947 and the winner, the Italian Achille Varzi also drove an Alfa Romeo, Chico Landi arrived in second place in his Maserati. Thirty-two years after the first race, on March 30, 1972, fifty thousand spectators saw Carlos Reutemann win the first modern Formula 1 race at the Interlagos circuit in Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham. In the next year, Brazil definitely joined the selected group of countries on the calendar of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. Many people think that Interlagos made it possible for motorsport to develop in the country offering a world class circuit for the various new categories that needed a home. In 1980, the Brazilian Grand Prix moved to Rio de Janeiro seeking better conditions and there were rumors that Interlagos would be turned into a housing project.

The motorsport season has finally come to Sweden with the first races of the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia 2019 taking place at Ring Knutstorp on 3-4 May. The venue will host the opening two rounds of the championship as part of the celebratory Porsche Festival. Close to 1,000 guests and 500 modern and vintage Porsche cars are expected to participate in the event. Prior to the race weekend, a guest driver is traditionally invited to challenge the 23 regular championship contenders by driving Porsche Sweden’s guest car. The event at Ring Knutstorp will see one of the biggest names in motorsport behind the wheel of car 911. Ayrton Senna 2 Preface I never met Ayrton Senna but I was a fan. Since his untimely death on May 1, 1994 at Imola, every book imaginable has already been written about him, except for one. The subject of that missing book is contentious because it addresses the fundamental question of what caused Senna’s car to veer off the track at 300km/h on Lap 7 of the San Marino Grand Prix. Tamburello was conceived more than fifteen years ago as a private project to fulfil my own need for understanding. The original project had grown in fits and starts and lay dormant for over a decade until its resurrection when I was approached to publish again my old material on Imola ’94. What began as minor revision of a short article has metamorphosed into a book. I’m painfully aware of the fact that - for many understandable reasons - the cause of Ayrton Senna’s accident remains a sensitive subject, but I feel an obligation towards the wider world to share what I’ve discovered.

Forgotten F1 Teams – Arrows Welcome to Forgotten F1 Teams – a mini series from Sidepodcast chronicling the rise and fall of teams that couldn’t stay the distance. This is the fourth show, we’ve already looked at Simtek, Pacific and Forti, but today we’re talking about Arrows. Arrows Grand Prix came to life in 1977, founded by previous Shadow employees, Franco Ambrosio, Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass and Tony Southgate – the surnames of whom spell out Arrows… sort of. Based in Milton Keynes, their Formula 1 entry was a bit of a rush job, with their first ever car being produced in just 53 days. Riccardo Patrese was brought on board to steer the car and the early signs were promising. They finished tenth in their first race in ‘78, almost won their second, and picked up some points in their third Grand Prix. Unfortunately, the team didn’t have an easy start to life with some early controversies. Founder Franco Ambrosio had to leave the team after being found guilty of financial misconduct in Italy, and sent to prison. The team were then sued by Shadow for copyright on their chassis, which was upheld by the court. However, this didn’t stop them, as while the decision was being made over the the copied chassis, Arrows had built a brand new car, which then took to the track without them having to miss a race. Patrese was involved in a serious multi‐car pile up at the Italian Grand Prix that year. Fellow driver Ronnie Peterson died after the accident, and James Hunt, who was also involved, led a successful campaign to get Patrese banned from racing at the next Grand Prix.

(Feb. 11, 2020) – Peter O. Argetsinger, a member of the International Motor Racing Research Center’s Governing Council and an international racing champion and respected driving coach, is being remembered across the industry for his talents and joy in the sport. Argetsinger died Thursday, Feb. 6, at his home in Watkins Glen after a fight against cancer. He was 69. As the son of Jean and Cameron Argetsinger, who were the founders and organizers of the first races in Watkins Glen, motorsport was an important part of his life from early on. Maintaining a home in Watkins Glen, as well as Sebring, Fla., Argetsinger was involved with the IMRRC since it opened. He joined the Governing Council in 2018. "Peter was an incredible racer and beloved racing instructor, but most importantly he was a good friend,” John Saunders, senior advisor at NASCAR and chairman of the IMRRC Governing Council, said. “The world of motorsports is richer for his dedication to developing young talent and growing the sport’s future. Pete will always be considered family to the International Motor Racing Research Center, an organization to which he devoted much wisdom and guidance.” Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup, also a member of the IMRRC’s Governing Council, noted Argetsinger’s dedication to the sport and Watkins Glen. “Peter was an important part in carrying on the legacy and tradition that his father, Cameron, and family started here in Watkins Glen,” Printup said.
