Indeed, T.S. Eliot, as is well-known. was led to opine that "it is to be expected that the critic and the creative artist should frequently be the same person" .1 In contemporacy Africa, the view is widely held that the creative sensibility is other than and superior to the critical; and, in the tradition of the wide-spread and age-long "dispute" between writers and critics. that the critic is a junior partner (to the writer), even a parasite.2 Yet the evidence is abundant that some of Africa's leading writers have also produced considerable and compelling criticism: Achebe, Ngugi and Soyinka, to name a few. Their independent criticalworks aside, African writers have continued in their creative works to give information and shed light on critical and literary theory. The special attraction ofthis practice ofembedding, hinting at or discussing critical and literary ideas or views in creative writing is that the cut and thrust of contemporacy critical debates. the shifting sands of critical taste and fashion, and the interweaving of personal.opinion and public demands are gathered up and sifted through the imaginative process and the requirements ofthe particular literacy genre; its greatest danger is to be expected from a disregard for the imperatives of form. -

SUBJECT: BRITISH LITERATURE 19TH CENTURY TOPIC: The Importance of being Earnest SEETHU BABY MANGALAM 2020-2021 The Importance of being Earnest Comedy of Manners A Comedy of Manners is a play concerned with satirising society’s manners A manner is the method in which everyday duties are performed, conditions of society, or a way of speaking. It implies a polite and well-bred behaviour. Comedy of Manners is known as high comedy because it involves a sophisticated wit and talent in the writing of the script. In this sense it is both intellectual and very much the opposite of slapstick. Comedy of Manners In a Comedy of Manners however, there is often minimal physical action and the play may involve heavy use of dialogue. A Comedy of Manners usually employs an equal amount of both satire and farce resulting in a hilarious send-up of a particular social group. This was usually the middle to upper classes in society. The satire tended to focus on their materialistic nature, never-ending desire to gossip and hypocritical existence. Comedy of Manners The plot of such a comedy, usually concerned with an illicit love affair or similarly scandalous matter, is subordinate to the play’s brittle atmosphere, witty dialogue, and pungent commentary on human foibles. This genre is characterized by realism (art), social analysis and satire. These comedies held a mirror to the finer society of their age. These comedies are thus true pictures of the noble society of the age. This genre held a mirror to the high society of the Restoration Age. -

Book Review Nietzsche and the “English”: The Influence of British and American Thought on His Philosophy written by Thomas H. Brobjer (New York: Humanities Books, 2008) reviewed by Martine Prange (University of Amsterdam & Maastricht University) ietzsche did not know English well and he Nnever visited the British Isles. He accused ‘the small-spiritedness of England’ to be ‘now the great danger on Earth’ and he dismissed the English for be- ing ‘no philosophical race’ (BGE 252). Nevertheless, in his new book Nietzsche and the “English” (which term refers to what we now call ‘Anglo-American’ philosophy and literature), Thomas Brobjer, associ- ate professor in the History of Science and Ideas at the University of Uppsala, sets out to show that such statements conceal the fact that ‘many of Nietzsche’s favourite authors were British and American and dur- ing two extended periods of his life Nietzsche was enthusiastic about and highly interested in British and American thinking and literature, and read intensively works by and about British authors’ (12). He further claims that those readings had a much deeper impact on Nietzsche’s philosophy than recognized so far, in both negative and positive ways. On a more general level, he wants to reveal how Nietzsche worked and thought by focusing on his response to his readings. Thus, Brobjer researches what Nietzsche read, when he read it, how seriously he read it, and in which manner his readings influenced his thought. Brobjer’s claims spur curiosity. Children’s Classics Through The Lenses of Literary Theory Adam Georgandis Bellaire High School INTRODUCTION Literary theory is largely absent from high school English courses. While virtually all high school students read and respond to literature, few are given opportunities to analyze the works they read using established, critical methods. This curriculum unit will introduce high school students to four critical approaches, and it will ask students to apply each approach to selected works of children’s literature. Four methods of literary criticism - feminism, Marxism, post-colonial criticism, and reader-centered criticism – are especially useful in understanding the wide variety of texts students study in high school and college English courses. Feminist criticism suggests that readers can fully comprehend works of literature only when they pay particular attention to the dynamics of gender. Many high school readers are naturally drawn to the issue of gender. In several canonical works – The Scarlet Letter and The Awakening are good examples – understanding the roles of key female characters is an important and provocative task. Our use of feminist criticism will produce interesting discussions of traditional gender roles and societal expectations in literature and in the world of daily experience. Marxist criticism suggests that readers must closely examine the dynamics of class as they strive to understand the works they read. Many students focus naturally on the issue of class when they read works which explicitly call attention to it – the novels of John Steinbeck and Richard Wright, for example. Extending this focus to works of literature which do not call particular attention to class struggle will be a challenging and potentially rewarding endeavor. -

ROMANTIC COMEDY Laughter and Culture Comedy, Repression, and Cultural Dreamwork Sigmund Freud jokes function a form of liberation; whatever a society represses frequently returns in the form of comedy to taunt it. This often occurs quite literally in the figure of the Shakespearean- like fool who tells a truth that others dare not utter. Several likely prospects on the street but does a double take and hurries away when one of this would-be brides turns out to be black and another Jewish. For the Marx Brothers, nothing is sacred. From Racism to Social Integration Immigrants: Chaplin to Depardieu Chaplin, whose “Tramp” character embodies an essential ambivalence toward society. Thus, Chaplin comedies often play against the genre’s expectations, striking a note of pathos. The film’s attack on phoniness and its celebration of authentic feeling moves it, however, toward Chaplinesque pathos rather than comic triumph: Depardieu’s rediscovered integrity forces him to abandon his initial, self-centered goal of getting citizenship by whatever means possible. Integration and the Regeneration of Society Hundreds of other comedies in which an individual struggles to enter society. Through the theme of comic integration, American screen comedies demonstrate the flexibility of our democracy social structure through its ability to absorb new members and integrate them into a new social order, whose unity and diversity exceeds that of the old order. A Brief Overview of Literary Criticism Woman Reading Book in a Landscape, Camille Corot Literary Critical Theory is a tool that helps you find meaning in stories, poems and plays. There are many different ways to interpret a novel or short story. When we read literature, we do so to learn more about: ● The human condition ● The experience of loss and death ● The structure of power in society and how it is implemented (including the issues that surround race and gender). ● The psychology of characters and individuals in general ● The sociology and history of cultures that produce specific pieces of literature Literary Theory helps us discover the things listed above in the books and stories we read. So how do you use theory to read a book? Before exploring, in brief, different theories, it is important to develop a reading strategy that will help you form ideas. You should keep a reading notebook and write down ideas and information as you read. Here is a checklist of things to notice: ● Title. How does it pertain to the story? Does it symbolize events or people in the story? ● Narration: Who is telling the story? How does the narrator approach the topic? ● Subject: What is the basic situation? What is happening to the characters and how are they reacting to events? ● Mood: What is the mood of the story, i.e. the emotional background? How is it expressed in the language and setting? ● Characters: What do the characters learn in the course of the story? What are their failings and how do they overcome them, or not? What is the main character’s desire? Is that desire ever fulfilled? How does the main character change? ● Character Interaction: How do the characters interact in the story? How do they communicate with each other? How do they handle conflict? ● Plot: What are the main events in the plot that lead the character to new insights, or to his or her failure? When you read a book, you can highlight the passages that strike you as significant. -

Critical Discussion THE DECLINE OF LITERARY CRITICISM by Richard A. Posner ónán McDonald, a lecturer in literature at the University of R Reading, has written a short, engaging book the theme of which is evident from the title: The Death of the Critic. Although there is plenty of both academic and journalistic writing about literature, less and less is well described by the term “literary criticism.” The literary critics of the first two-thirds or so of the twentieth century, now dead, including poets and other creative writers, such as T. S. Eliot, journalists such as Edmund Wilson, and academic literary critics, as distinct from literary scholars, such as F. R. Leavis in England and Cleanth Brooks in the United States, have so few successors that the very genre, if not yet dead, is moribund.1 McDonald deplores the decline of literary criticism and seeks to explain its causes. In place of literary criticism, McDonald (and many others, such as John Ellis) argue, we have postmodern literary theory, an animal of quite a different color from literary criticism.2 “Texts . -

"Those That Play Your Clowns:" Comic Actors and Comic Acting on the 19th Century American Stage Barnard Hewitt (Barnard Hewitt's Fellows Address was delivered at the ATA Convention in Chicago, August 16, 1977.) It seems to me that critics and historians of theatre have neglected comedians and the acting of comedy, and I ask myself why should this be so? Nearly everyone enjoys the acting of comedy. As the box office has regularly demonstrated, more people enjoy comedy than enjoy serious drama. I suspect that comedy and comedians are neglected because critics and scholars feel, no doubt unconsciously that because they arouse laughter rather than pity and fear, they don't deserve serious study. Whatever the reason for this neglect, it seems to me unjust. In choosing the subject for this paper, I thought I might do something to redress that injustice. I hoped to identify early styles of comic acting on our stage, discover their origins in England, note mutations caused by their new environment, and take note of their evolution into new styles. I don't need to tell you how difficult it is to reconstruct with confidence the acting style of any period before acting was recorded on film. One must depend on what can be learned about representative individuals: about the individual's background, early training and experience, principal roles, what he said about acting and about his roles, pictures of him in character, and reports by his contemporaries - critics and ordinary theatregoers - of what he did and how he spoke. First-hand descriptions of an actor's performance in one or more roles are far and away the most enlightening evidence, but nothing approaching Charles Clarke's detailed description of Edwin Booth's Hamlet is available for an American comic actor.1 Comedians have written little about their art.2 What evidence I found is scattered and ambiguous when it is not contradictory. -

Kaiser Introduction: Navigating Differential Futures, (Un)making Colonial Pasts Lorna Burns and Birgit M. Kaiser In the fifteen years that have followed Robert Young’s seminal rereading of the epistemic and physical violence of colonialism as a desiring- machine’s production, coding and re/deterritorialization of colonial desire, drawing on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to ‘think through’ (Young 1995, p. 173) postcoloniality, few have followed Young’s lead and ventured into the difficult domain of Deleuze and the postcolonial. Christopher Miller’s application of Deleuze and Guattari’s nomad and rhizome as conceptual tools for theorizing the (post)identity politics of postcolonialism has perhaps come closest to setting the parameters of a Deleuzian postcolonial analysis: today both nomadology and rhizomatic thought continue to find privileged reso- nance with the work of postcolonial theorists and critics (cf. Glissant 1997; Huggan 2008, pp. 28–30; Miller 1998). Without denying the relevance of these terms to postcolonial studies, this volume promotes a more fundamental alignment of the fields of Deleuzian thought and postcolonialism. In doing so, it forms part of a growing awareness within postcolonial studies of the critical potential of this dialogue, as evi- denced by the recent work of Simone Bignall and Paul Patton – in both their co- edited volume Deleuze and the Postcolonial (2010) and their indi- vidual works Deleuzian Concepts (Patton 2010), and Postcolonial Agency (Bignall 2010) – as well as by the work of contemporary literary scholars including Mrinalini Greedharry (2008), Ronald Bogue (2010), Eva Aldea (2011), and, of course, as we shall see, Peter Hallward in his Absolutely Postcolonial: Writing between the Singular and the Specific (2001).
