Lenny, as I knew him, the great musician, the 20th century giant with whom, in 1986, I conceived the Academy, was one of the first people with whom I engaged in dialogue about “this thing,” as he called it, just before proposing that we call our “thing” the Academy for the Love of Learning. “Why that name?”, I asked – and he said: “because you believe that if we truly open ourselves to learning, it will liberate us and bring us home, individually and collectively. So, the name is perfect, because the acronym is ALL!” I resisted it at first, but soon came to realize that the name indeed was perfect. This and other prescient dialogues have helped us get to where we are today – a thriving, innovative organization. Hopefully, a light in the darkness. I have learned many things from the conversations and experiences I have engaged in and the people I have met along the way in this 20-plus-year journey of the Academy, and the two preceding decades that lead to my founding of it, formally, in 1998. One essential thing I have learned is that in order to open and engage with others and all of life we must take the lid off learning and bring ourselves into that capacity to transform. This is learning that leads us, by nature, to kind-hearted, peaceful, vibrant communities, telling stories of wellbeing. My hope is that this beautiful booklet will bring you into a fuller understanding of the story of the Academy as I have lived it from 1971-2018. I look forward to engaging, listening and working together to waking ourselves up by bringing light, steadfastly. As Henry David Thoreau tells us so beautifully: “We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn, which does not forsake us even in our soundest sleep. I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man [sic] to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor. It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally we can do. Aaron wrote this poem for the occasion. We seek to encourage and cultivate the powers of critical thought, imagination, curiosity, innate sense of purpose, wonder and inspiration, and an ongoing awakening of the heart. To achieve our mission, the Academy exists as a nonprofit educational organization developing and disseminating a transformative curriculum and methodology – our learning field inquiry approach to learning – through an integrated set of programs, conferences, organizational practices and research. The overarching intent of our work is to help stimulate and support the rebirth and renewal of learning and education in America. It has propelled me to investigate/be with and act in the world differently and still does. I cannot thank you enough for creating space to allow that to happen. Secondly, I have been using some of what I learned from you when I am facilitating; in particular moving folks through practice, individual reflections (writing and non-writing), various structures of dyad and small group and then scaffolded opportunities to make meaning. In some ways, it feels like I have seen from masters and that unlocks a sense of permission for me to tread this ground myself. I am left with a sense that your work/your practice/your efforts and their impact on me have gone on to impact many others in the world. What a wonderful cycle to be a part of! Wishing you deeply, deeply well, —Chad McGehee Learning & Development Program Lead Healthy Minds Innovations Center for Healthy Minds University of Wisconsin / Madison In 2016 The Academy began a collaboration with the Center for Healthy Minds with the intention of developing an evidence base for our Foundation Programs. 1978 1980 AMERICAN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC A TRIP TO CHINA In 1978 Aaron Stern became Dean of the American Conservatory of Music China trek takes a giant step toward cultural harmony in Chicago and served through the early 1980’s. It was here that he began by John von Rhein, Classical Music Critic, Chicago Tribune to focus on learning and educational processes, developing creative, experiential curricula that won national acclaim. “The “Gang of Five,” as the delegation of administrators from the American Conservatory of Music might be called, were Charles Moore, president; Aaron Stern, dean; Adia Ghertovici, director of pedagogy; Idilia Jurco, comptroller; and husband, attorney Stephen Jurco. Their mission was to observe teaching methods in three of China’s largest conservatories, give master classes, and listen to student performances. The visit, apparently the first ever by an American conservatory, paved the way for a group of 10 teachers and advanced students from Chinese music schools to begin a course of study next January.” Aaron Stern playing piano in Leonard Bernstein’s >> aloveoflearning.org 7 Connecticut Studio ACADEMY PROGRAMS Encounter Learning as a Practice through the Academy’s Foundational Programs The Academy Foundational Programs invite community members to explore and develop the learning impulse as a practice for “waking up” through a variety of intensive workshops, community conversations and longer courses. We believe that lasting, positive change can occur when we liberate the learning process from the four walls of our schools and institutions. To begin, we need to bring our attention and awareness to the learning impulse itself.

    National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail The "Stars for Freedom" Rally March 24,1965 The "March to Montgomery" held the promise of fulfilling the hopes of many Americans who desired to witness the reality of freedom and liberty for all citizens. It was a movement which drew many luminaries of American society, including internationally-known performers and artists. In a drenching rain, on the fourth day, March 24th, carloads and busloads of participants joined the march as U.S. Highway 80 widened to four lanes, thus allowing a greater volume of participants than the court- imposed 300-person limitation when the roadway was narrower. There were many well-known celebrities among the more than 25,000 persons camped on the 36-acre grounds of the City of St. Jude, a Catholic social services complex which included a school, hospital, and other service facilities, located within the Washington Park neighborhood. This fourth campsite, situated on a rain-soaked playing field, held a flatbed trailer that served as a stage and a host of famous participants that provided the scene for an inspirational performance enjoyed by thousands on the dampened grounds. The event was organized and coordinated by the internationally acclaimed activist and screen star Harry Belafonte, on the evening of March 24, 1965. The night "the Stars" came out in Alabama Mr. Belafonte had been an acquaintance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. since 1956. He later raised thousands of dollars in funding support for the Freedom Riders and to bailout many protesters incarcerated during the era, including Dr.

His Piano Sonata (1938) reflected his Leonard Bernstein ties to Copland, with links also to the music of Hindemith and Stravinsky, and his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (1942) was similarly grounded in a neoclassical aesthetic. The composer Paul Bowles praised the clarinet sonata as having a "tender, sharp, singing quality," as being "alive, tough, integrated." It was a prescient assessment, which ultimately applied to Bernstein’s music in all genres. Bernstein’s professional breakthrough came with exceptional force and visibility, establishing him as a stunning new talent. In 1943, at age twenty-five, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, replacing Bruno Walter at the last minute and inspiring a front-page story in the New York Times. Johnson Band Dance KanKouran West African Dance Ensemble Ziva’s Spanish Dance Ensemble Bernard Mavritte Bernard Mavritte was born in Washington, DC where he received his education in the public schools, and later studied Education and Vocal Studies at Howard University. He also studied Choral Conducting at the Inter-American University in Puerto Rico. He taught in DC Public Schools for many years as well as performed internationally. He also hosted a DC radio show on a leading Gospel Music station. In 1965 he toured Europe at the Assistant Musical Director for James Baldwin’s play The Amen Corner, and served as the Choral Music Director for the Tony Award winning play The Great White Hope for which one of his own compositions was used. He has performed for President John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, Barbara Streisand, Leonard Bernstein, Sammy Davis Jr, Duke Ellington, and others. He is also featured on the soundtrack of ABC television special Back to Glory where his arrangement of “The Colored Volunteers” is heard. Currently, Bernard is the CEO the publishing company Branches Music and his own record label. He has recorded five CDs and continues to perform in DC and beyond. He serves as the director and a musician for the Chancel Choir of his church, and enjoys performing regularly for Washington Performing Arts’ Enriching Experiences for seniors program.

    Reflection and Emergence: Celebrating 20 years of the Academy for the Love of Learning and Leonard Bernstein’s 100th 201 AUGUST 25 8 1 Copyright © 2018 Academy for the Love of Learning, Inc. © Kate Russell About the Academy 2018 marks both The Academy for the Love of Learning’s 20th anniversary and the centennial of the birth of the 20th century musical giant Leonard Bernstein. The Academy shares a deep history with Leonard Bernstein, and ultimately was birthed from an intense collaboration between Bernstein and Academy founder and President Aaron Stern during the fnal decade of Bernstein’s life. Stern, then Dean of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, had a profound discovery about learning while observing how music students learned music. From that discovery, Stern recognized that a restoration of the human capacity to learn was essential not only to the revitalization of music, but all of education and more generally, Western culture itself. From this, Stern began to develop a body of work, pedagogy and learning methodologies that are now at the center of the Academy for the Love of Learning. Stern’s approach to learning found its counterpart in Bernstein’s vision for a better world and a lifelong commitment to sharing that vision through music. Stern’s clear conviction that by “taking the lid of learning, we can learn ourselves to a better world, individually and collectively” touched and inspired Bernstein deeply toward the end of his life. Bernstein invested in Stern enormously during that last decade of his life. Following Bernstein’s death in 1990, Stern developed further and implemented peripatetically the methodologies he frst began to explore while at the Conservatory.

Adjustable Wrench dates from 1987 and comes from a body of work that reflects an array of influences ranging from Bartók and Philip Glass to Chaka Khan and the Talking Heads. • Torke originally composed this piece for a chamber ensemble of 15 players divided into three groups, each comprised of four instruments paired with a keyboard instrument: woodwinds with piano, brass with marimba, and strings with a synthesizer. The composer however, adapted the score to make it suitable for an orchestra by allowing the string parts to be performed by multiple musicians.
