The Social Care Accolades Carers News Celebrating Carers Week 2005 Carers Week 2005 took place between 13th – 19th June 2005 and there were plenty of activities organised in Pembrokeshire to celebrate this. The theme of Carers Week this year was ‘Work, Rest and Play’ which complements the new Equal Opportunities Act which came into force in April 2005. The Act gives carers more choice and opportunities to lead a more fulfilling life, by ensuring they receive information about their rights to assessment, training and work opportunities. The week started with Choral Evensong dedicated to Carers which was held at St. David’s Cathedral on Sunday 12th June .Over 30 carers were in attendance. He was able to talk to carers about the concerns they faced because he had found himself in the same position – adapting working practices to ensure 24 hour care cover, having the family life dominated by concern for the cared- for person, and being unaware of how caring ‘crept-up’ on them, despite both Jon and his wife being qualified social workers with many years of experience. “Caring is not something you can plan for,” he said, “it creeps up and traps you,” - a view shared by many people attending the event. Jon told those present that what he wanted to achieve through the event was not just about what the Director of Social Care and Housing, Mr Jon Skone, answering questions posed by Carers Council could offer carers but what at the Clynfyw Countryside Centre on Friday 17th June. society as a whole could provide in supporting the valuable role played by unpaid carers in the community. 1.
