Dengue Tables Episode Classification by District 2016: Week 52 Belize. Ministry of Health Dengue tables episode classification by district 2016: Week 52 Belize dengue classification by epidemiological week 2016 ABSTRACT This report presents results based on 2016 data collected by the Ministry of Health, Belize. An epidemiologic surveillance exercise on the Dengue virus disease was conducted by the Ministry's EPI Unit for 52 weeks. Four tables with corresponding graphs provide a breakdown of the confirmed, probable, suspected (clinical), and suspected (by test) cases of dengue according to epidemiological week, community within the Belize district, age group and sex. Results based on the grand total for each class show the highest incidence of dengue occurring in Week 11, in Belize City, in Age-group 1-4, and among Females. The grand total of 2016 Dengue virus cases in the confirmed, probable, suspected (clinical), and suspected (by test) categories for 49 communities in Belize was 1,562. There is no indication that criminals actively target U.S. citizens in Belize. Tourists and expatriates residing in Belize are more susceptible to incidents of crime due to perceived wealth, particularly when not exhibiting robust personal security practices and situational awareness. Major crimes continue to shift from being concentrated in the high-population area of Belize City to districts in the north, west, and south of Belize, as reported in 2018. A number of violent crimes, including multiple murders, thefts, and home invasions affected long-time expatriates residing in rural communities in 2018. Confrontational crimes, such as armed robbery and theft, have increased in tourist areas and remote areas alike. Murder, sexual assault, and armed robberies occurred in areas frequented by tourists and expatriates in 2018.

In this instance, Ecotourism as a developmental tool and a tool for biodiversity planning and conservation for Belize is emphasized. This document highlights the potential of ecotourism as an economic activity that will: contribute to the sustainable economic and social development of the country and contribute to environmental and cultural heritage preservation, while ensuring the participation of the local communities and other stakeholders in the process. Overview of present state of Tourism Development in Belize: 1.1 Relative importance in the national economy Tourism is currently the most important contributor to Belize’s economy. According to the figures presented by the Belize Tourism Board for the year 1999, tourism contributes to approximately 18 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 23 percent of the GDP with indirect economic benefits complied, 25 percent of total foreign exchange earnings and 1 in 4 jobs. The trend for the past ten years (1990 - to present) shows a steady increase (reflected in the Annex). Renewed investor confidence, an integrated tourism strategy and clear policy direction will set the platform for further economic growth while protecting Belize’s rich natural and cultural resources. Given the increasing economic importance of tourism to Belize’s economy, the Ministry of Tourism and Youth has embarked on the development of a new strategic platform for tourism.

    Director General’s Annual Report 2016 March 30th, 2017 This report incorporates activities for the entire year 2016 for programs in all sectors of the National Society at the Headquarters (HQ) level. Branch reference is made strictly on the basis of HQ’s initiative and interventions at branch level. Mention is made of activities by those branches that were active and that submitted reports to HQ. The year 2016 was not without its challenges, but there were many accomplishments worthy of being recorded and shared. The highlights of the year’s work at HQ level are as follows: BRC entered its 4th year of the “Resilience in the Americas” (RITA) program being implemented in 8 northern communities of Corozal and Orange Walk. Main accomplishment include: o Economic Opportunities – partnership with La Inmaculada Credit Union, BELTRAIDE (SBDC) o Introduction & completion of PHAST (Participatory Hygiene And Sanitation Transformation) in communities and schools and passing on the facilitation from BRC to Community Support Group members (the community). o Conflict Management workshops for young at-risk community members, which led to strong partnerships with ITVET and the Community Policing Unit in Orange Walk. o CSG (Community Support Group) strengthening – development of Advocacy & Marketing Plans and Community Profiles. This opened doors for collaboration and engagement of Government and stakeholders for the improvement of communities, living conditions, facilities and environment. o Engagement of Branches, linking them with communities, stakeholders and Government partners; expanding membership, through CSG meetings and RITA transition meetings with Branch and communities. The NS Conflict Management program continues to be strengthened through ICRC funding to work with the most at- risk youths in Belize City – partnership with Ministry of Education’s Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP), ITVET & Community Policing as well as communities.

CONSERVATION OF KARST IN BELIZE MICHAEL DAY Department of Geography, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53201, U.S.A. Karst areas in Belize are coming under increasing pressure from agriculture and other commerce. Opportunely protected karst areas are incorporated within forest reserves, national parks, wildlife sanc- tuaries, nature reserves, archaeological reserves, private conservation and management areas, and spe- cial development areas. The total area of karst afforded nominal protection is about 3400 km², or about 68% of the total. Incorporating special development areas, the protected karst area is about 4300 km², or 86% of the total. Even the more conservative percentage is unparalleled in Central America and the Caribbean, and per- haps the world. Significant protected karst areas include the Chiquibul, Blue Hole and Five Blues Lake national parks, the Bladen, Aquas Turbias and Tapir Mountain nature reserves, the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area, and the Caracol, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and El Pilar archaeological reserves. Extensive karst areas are located within the Vaca, Columbia River, Sibun, and Manatee forest reserves. The Manatee and Cayo West special development areas have considerable karstic components.
