The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team took a 11 1 two game set away from Niagara this past weekend as the Pioneers defeated 11 1 10 the Purple Eagles 4-2 in the first game and 6-3 in the second. Junior Austin 1 W, 5-2 Mcllmurray led the Pioneers with three goals, two assists for five points in the 1 L, 4-1 1/29 @ UCONN Hartford, Conn. W, 2-1 series. Freshman Josh Benson compiled 31 saves and allowed just five goals in 2/1 @ RMU Pittsburgh, Pa. W, 6-2 the entire series. The Tigers recorded a split on the road last weekend at 1 110 Holy Cross, winning 4-3 on Friday, while losing by the same score Saturday 1 0 night. The Pioneers swept a two game series against RIT that took place on Dec. 7 and 8. The SHU took the first game 4-3 in an overtime thriller courtesy of a goal by senior Mike Lee at 04:55 in the first overtime period. In the second game the Pioneers scored six goals in the game to earn a 6-4 victory over the Tigers to complete the weekend sweep. Sophomore Matt Tugnutt led the Pioneers in goals as he tallied two in the game one to 6 seal the game as he netted an empty net goal to make the final score 6-4. 110-213-39 6 6 2018-19 ATLANTIC HOCKEY STANDINGS Steeling the Show...Freshman Ryan Steele has been a top goal scorer TEAM PTS AHA OVERALL for the Pioneers as he tallied his seventh goal of the season against AIC 35 17-8-1 17-12-1 UCONN last Wednesday night. He currently is third on team in points Bentley 28 13-7-2 14-11-3 with 15 and tied for second on team in goals with seven. Air Force 25 11-8-3 13-11-4 RIT 25 11-8-3 13-12-3 Mercyhurst 24 11-9-2 13-14-3 Clare & Crocock Captain Pioneers in 2018-19.... Senior blueliners Liam- Sacred Heart 24 11-9-2 12-13-3 Niagara 21 9-11-3 10-16-3 Clare and Mike Crocock will serve as team captains in 2018-19. Clare skated in Army West Point 18 7-11-4 8-16-4 33 games in his junior campaign, finishing fifth on the team in assists (11) and Holy Cross 17 7-12-3 7-17-4 had 12 points. Crocock played in 37 games in his third season with SHU. He Robert Morris 17 8-13-1 9-18-1 tallied three goals, seven assists for a total of 10 points. Canisius 14 6-15-2 9-17-3 Pioneers Picked Tenth In Preseason Poll... Sacred Heart was picked to finish Upcoming Games tenth in the Atlantic Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll. Last season, Sacred Heart was 13-22-4 in Atlantic Hockey and finished tenth. SHU has recorded five straight seasons with double digit wins. Freshman Austin Magera is currently Mercyhurst at Army West Point, 7:05 pm tied for first in Atlantic Hockey in game winning goals this season as he has Robert Morris at Holy Cross, 7:05 pm tallied five for the Pioneers. Magera currently leads the team in points with 21 Canisius at Air Force, 9:05 pm and is tied for first in goals with nine as well as tied for second in assists with Bentley at Niagara, 7:05 pm 12. AIC at Arizona State, 9:05 pm Mcllmurray Making Moves.... Junior Austin Mcllmurray tallied five goals and three assists in the past five games for the Pioneers. He cashed in a Saturday, February 16 power play goal for the Pioneers in his two goal day against Robert Morris on RIT at Sacred Heart, 2:05 pm Feb. 1. He is currently tied for first on team in goals with nine on the year. He Robert Morris at Holy Cross, 5:05 pm was tabbed Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week as well as one of Three Stars by Canisius at Air Force, 7:05 pm NCAA Hockey for his three goal, two assist weekend at Niagara. AIC - 27 points Goalie of Week for his play against Robert Morris and UCONN this past week. 10. Sacred Heart - 20 points This is Benson's second weekly award that he has received this season as well as 11. Niagara - 15 points the third weekly award to be given to a SHU hockey player. Benson had an impressive week as he tallied a 5-0 record with wins over UCONN and a pair of two game sweep of Atlantic Hockey rival Robert Morris and Niagara.
