The first collective act of professional basketball players under the NBPA was a threat to strike just before the 1964 NBA All-Star Game. Eventually, they had achieved to get the pension plan that they hoped for many years. Larry Fleisher, the general counsel of the NBPA, and Oscar Robertson, the president of the NBPA, were determined to abolish the reserve clause in basketball. The reserve clause restrained the free movement of professional athletes for many years, and NBA players were the ones who established staunch struggle against it, in various ways, including litigation. The NBPA filed a class-action lawsuit, also known as the Oscar Robertson lawsuit, against the merger between two basketball leagues, the NBA, and the ABA (American Basketball Association) in April 1970.

    “You’re in the South Now, Brother”: The Atlanta Hawks and Race, 1968–1970 BY THOMAS AIELLO mong the players trickling into Atlanta in the summer of A 1968 following the arrival of the first NBA team to the Deep South, the former St. Louis Hawks, was “Pogo” Joe Caldwell, one of the team’s stars. In 1968, the Hawks, a perennial league power, had been regular-season champion of the league’s Western Divi- sion. Caldwell was an all-star, a former standout at Arizona State who played on the 1964 United States gold-medal-winning Olym- pic team. Caldwell, his wife, daughters, and sister arrived at the Holiday Inn in Atlanta, only to be greeted by a car full of whites who screamed “Hey, niggers!” before driving away. “Well,” his sis- ter told him, “you’re in the South now, brother.”1 Professional sports had already arrived in Atlanta and the Deep South when the Hawks began playing at Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum in October 1968. The move of the Milwaukee Braves to Atlanta, the impact of their black star, Hank Aaron, and the country’s poetic and fraught historical re- lationship with baseball and its role in race relations are gener- ally interpreted as paving the way for first the National Football League and then the NBA. The old Celtic dynasties are over and the Magic/Bird has not yet begun. Halbertsam, famous for his pulitzer prize wining reporting in Vietnam, follows the Portland Trail Blazers for a whole season. The team two years removed from their championship victory over the Sixers is struggling to survive the loss of the gifted Bill Walton to free agency. The playoffs and even a winning record are not guaranteed. But the real beauty of the book is not the drama of the Portland team but the changing nature of the NBA in general. Halberstam is writing in 1980. He cannot see that Magic and Bird will change the league and make it both popular and profitable. That is part of the beauty of this narrative; It is trapped in time. At the very end of the book, the owner of the San Diego Clippers decides to sell the team because, with Bill Walton injured he cannot make any money.

Brownell II* NASSH Conference Panel Presentation “Basketball in Transition: Globalization, Culture, and Historical Memory” May 25, 2019 INTRODUCTION After several up-and-down years, the NBA seemed at last to have turned the corner after the 1977 NBA Finals.1 The series, which saw the Portland Trail Blazers defeat the Philadelphia 76ers, had achieved unprecedented television ratings. It was the capstone on a year that had witnessed record attendance in both the regular season and playoffs,2 the successful merger with the rival ABA and the settlement of the longstanding Oscar Robertson labor litigation.3 The series itself had presented a classic contrast between the team-focus of Portland and the individual talent of Philadelphia.4 Moreover, the series served as a coming out party of sorts for the league’s two most marketable players: Julius Erving and Bill Walton.5 The two seemed to have had the potential to create a proto- “Magic”-Bird rivalry.6 One star was African-American, was the league’s most exciting player, and was polished and at ease with the media and the public. The other was white, was the master of fundamentals and team play, but was distant from the press and the public.7 Yet, despite these encouraging signs, the 1977 Finals would leave an ambivalent legacy. In the immediate term, the success of the Finals proved fleeting as the series itself and its participants dramatized many of the problems that would haunt the league for the next several years. In the longer term, however, the 1977 Finals and its participants also planted the seeds for the league’s redemption and helped usher in the modern game: how it is played, how it is marketed and how it became widely popular.

MANDLE Twenty years ago Christopher Lasch warned that sports were suffer- ing from a decreased emphasis on human cooperation and interdepen- dence.' In his 1979 book, The Culture of Narcissism: American Life in an Age of DiminishingExpectations, Lasch reported a tendency for play- ers "to advance their interests not merely against rival organizations but against their own teammates."2 He complained, "[t]he team player, like the organization man, has become an anachronism." 3 David Halber- stain, traveling with the Portland Trailblazers basketball team, soon thereafter observed the same tendency. He wrote, "[i]t was now an arti- cle of faith among thoughtful former players that the new breed were by far more talented, but that they lacked desperately one key element - a feeling for each other, a sense of community... ."I Those closest to the situation, the team's coaches, Halberstam reports, were convinced that an excessive concern with "[m]oney now clouded not only the relation- ships between management and player, but between player and player."'
