I now have serious concerns about the nature of this group and the potential threats to the mental and physical health of members and ex-members. I therefore decided to write this document based on what I observed and experienced, the conclusions I have drawn since leaving, testimonies of other ex-members of this group, psychological theory and research. I have read more cultic studies literature since the previous versions of my analysis, and relevant research on abuse and trauma in so-called Buddhist groups has since been published. I focus on all the potential harms because the primary aim of the analysis is to support those who wish to leave or have already left in identifying factors that may have contributed to their difficulties. There are no research studies yet with former NKT members as participants and the likelihood of recruiting a sufficient sample size to draw conclusions remains unlikely in my opinion.

Spiritualizing the Internet: Exploring Modern Buddhism and the Online Buddhist World Rutika Gandhi UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE Abstract Through the discussion of digital religion, modern Bud- dhism, and two different online platforms, this article ar- gues that religious activities or debates on the Internet mirror those in the real or the offline world. This paper fo- cuses on two different aspects of the online Buddhist real- ity: virtual worlds which may be experienced through ava- tars, and a web forum that claims to be universally Bud- dhist. By taking Second Life and the E-Sangha forum as ex- amples, this paper argues that in addition to exhibiting fea- tures of modern Buddhism, online religious performative acts also raise important questions about Buddhist iden- tity, authority, and authenticity. Bodhisattva Refutations « New Kadampa Truth Blog 9/9/08 4:14 PM Home About the New Kadampa Truth Blog Bodhisattva Refutations Recently at a Bodhisattva Centre (Brighton) Open Day, two people handed out leaflets to newcomers in order to dissuade them from attending the Centre’s Buddhist meditation classes. Many of their complaints stem from their dislike of the open opposition of many New Kadampa Tradition students to the Dalai Lama over his ban of one of their spiritual practices. It is understandable that some people might wish to protest in support of the Dalai Lama and it is their freedom to do so. Moreover, the New Kadampa Tradition and Bodhisattva Centre have not claimed to be faultless organizations. However, the information these two people were handing out was largely incorrect and misleading, so we need to address it here. Please let us know if you have any more questions about any of the issues raised below. This leaflet has also been copied and pasted onto a couple of other websites. Replies to: Information about Bodhisattva Centre (We thought you might like to know) The Buddhist Centre you are about to visit is one of the larger residential Centres of the New Kadampa Tradition.www.kadampa.org You may notice that the publicity for this Open Day does not mention the NKT or any Registered Charity information about the Centre. Bodhisattva Centre was not trying to hide the fact that it is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition or a registered British charity, and these facts are very clear from all the other Centre publicity.

Killing for the Dharma: An Analysis of the Shugden Deity and Violence in Tibetan Buddhism A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors with Distinction by Michael Nau May 2007 Oxford, Ohio 2 ABSTRACT KILLING FOR THE DHARMA: AN ANALYSIS OF THE SHUGDEN DEITY AND VIOLENCE IN TIBETAN BUDDHISM by Michael Nau Violence is a problem endemic to organized religion. What this thesis will examine is a particular manifestation of violence in Tibetan Buddhism with the controversy surrounding the deity Shugden. In order to understand and contextualize this conflict, I examine the roots of how a supposedly pacifist religion can sanction bloodshed. This requires an analysis of Tibet’s slow and ongoing conversion to Buddhism and how this process occurred as a navigation of political, economic, and social transformations. This materialist basis for conflict is essential in understanding of the contemporary Shugden phenomenon, which has attracted the attention of Western media and several national governments who all have certain political objectives regarding the worship of Shugden. What this paper will therefore argue is that this violence is not a result of abstract theological debate, but rather due to changing demographics, economic pressures, claims to legitimacy, cultural adaptations, and control of resources.
