The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Lindi Ortegas följande album Little Red Boots och Cigarettes & Truckstops kritikerrosades. 2014 var hon nominerad i kategorin ”Female Artist of the Year” under Canadian Country Music Association Awards. • Katie Moore's Picture of Montreal on "Fooled by the Fun" | No Depression 2015-10-23, 3:59 PM
Katie Moore & Andrew Horton Katie Moore’s music has always challenged quick categorization by laying its hat on the hooks between folk, Americana, country and 70’s Southern California. Her latest album examines her favourite aspects of the roots of country and bluegrass: harmony singing. Six More Miles (Fat Rainbow Records) is a duets album recorded with Andrew Horton, who has served as bassist in Katie’s band for over 10 years and who fronts the Firemen, a shit- kickin’ country band that has brought the honky-tonk back to Montreal. The album was recorded live over two days at Mixart Studio in Montreal by producer Warren Spicer, and features some of Montreal’s sharpest musicians, including Joe Grass (Patrick Watson, Barr Brothers) on dobro and mandolin, Sage Reynolds (Jordan Officer) on bass, and Alex Kehler (Soulwood) on fiddle and nyckelharpa – an old-time Swedish stringed instrument similar to the hurdy-gurdy but sounded with a bow instead of a wheel. Inspired by the warm sounds of classic country albums such as Merle Haggard’s Roots Vol. 1, the songs on Six More Miles are anchored by Katie and Horton’s lush vocals and emboldened with simple arrangements. Katie’s 2015 album, Fooled by the Fun was declared “one of the strongest Americana releases by a Canadian this year” by No Depression, while her 2011 album Montebello won a GAMIQ award as well as the Socan Songwriting award. This new recording, Six More Miles, showcases Katie and Andrew’s effortless harmonies. The two have been singing together, on stage and off, for years.

  • OMDC, on a Live Music Strategy for Ontario
Introduction The Canadian music industry includes a wide range of artists and entrepreneurs who create, produce and market original Canadian music. The Canadian music industry includes musicians, songwriters, record labels, managers, agents, concert promoters and music publishers. The Canadian market is dominated by the large foreign-owned record and publishing companies but also has a strong independent sector comprising mainly small- to medium-sized record companies, publishers and management firms. The vast majority of Canadian content is commercially released by Canadian-owned and -controlled indie labels. Ontario’s music industry is the largest in Canada with the highest revenues across the board―82% of Canada’s total. These revenues come from music publishing, sound recording studios, record production and distribution.1 Moreover, the Ontario industry produces a huge number of critically acclaimed artists: 2013 Juno award nominees and winners include acts and albums produced by a long list of Ontario labels and distributors like Dine Alone, Anthem, Fontana North and Paper Bag. Ontario artists among the 2013 Juno winners include The Weeknd for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Metric for Alternative Album of the Year and Rush for Rock Album of the Year. The prestigious Polaris Prize for 2012 was won by Arts & Crafts artist Feist, for Metals. • Foley Rebecca IM 2016 Maste
“Crazy B****”: Discriminatory Language, Radio Censorship, Regulation, and Enforcement Policies in Canada by Rebecca Irene Marie Foley A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2016 Rebecca Irene Marie Foley, 2016 Abstract This thesis focuses on the censorship, or lack thereof, of discriminatory language on Canadian radio stations. In addition to purely discriminatory based language, this project also investigated the ways in which race, gender, sexuality, and ability were employed in popular music. Two data sets were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively to find that private and public radio stations in Canada are more likely to censor discriminatory or explicit content than their community station counterparts. Further, discriminatory language based on gender, is not only more likely to be contained in popular music, but it is also less likely to be censored in comparison to language based on racial or sexual orientation based discrimination. The first data set included 485 songs from the Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1985 and 2015. The second data set included 2818 songs from a six-month period (May-October 2015) of the top twenty charts from 27 different radio stations in Canada, including private, public, and community stations. Keywords: radio; broadcast policy; discrimination; popular music; Canada; ii Acknowledgements I wish to thank everyone who had a hand in helping me shape this thesis. From deep class discussions to small conversations outside of an academic environment, each interaction I had talking about my research helped me to refine, explain, and get my thoughts on paper in a relatively coherent way.
