ESSEC Business School graduate, Pascal is head of co-productions for Backup Films. Entirely dedicated to film financing, Backup Films has accompanied, in 2009, over 60 am- bitious international projects in their search of financing, whether in their development, production, or distribution phase. Backup Films is currently managing film investments funds of over €33.6M, and has brokered, last year, €4.5M of co-production, distribution and equity deals. Over the past 8 years, the films financed through the Backup Films Agency or Backup Films’ funds have gathered 49 A-class festival selections and have won 18 major prizes. Speakers: -Alexandre Mallet-Guy - Memento Films (France): Co-founder of the production, distribution and international sales company Memento Films in 2003, based in Paris. He is in charge of the distribution and production. Coproduction: -Cold Souls by Sophie Barthes with Paul Giamatti and Emily Watson, USA-France, 2009, official competition in Sundance. -O'Horten by Bent Hamer, Norway-Germany-France, 2008, official competition UCR in Cannes Festival -Taxidermia by Gyorgy Pàlfi, Hungary-Austria-France, 2006, official selection UCR in Cannes Festival -Massimo Brioschi - Mikado (Italy): After graduating in Psychology at University of Padua and in Film Studies at University of Bologna, Massimo establishes and directs two non profit associations devoted to film culture promotion, and holds several workshops for high schools in Bologna and Milan focused on the education to the audiovisual image. 5 In 2004, after attending the MEGA Master in Rome, he enters as Acquisitions Consultant at Mikado Film, where he currently holds the position of Head of Development. He also acts as a national expert consultant for the MEDIA Project Development Programme, holds cinema workshops at University Bicocca of Milan, is a reader/editor for both fiction and non fiction books at Feltrinelli and RCS Publishing, and works as a story editor on various independent projects. New tools for distributors: Moderator: -Jean-Paul Commin – Consultant (France): After studying journalism in Paris, Jean-Paul Commin became a professional journalist in 1971. He then worked as head of information, and as editor, of reviews in particular devoted to music. He occupied managerial positions from 1976 to 1986 with Phonogram/Polygram France (Direction of Marketing, International and then Managing Director). He joined the Time Warner WEA Music group from 1987 until 1990, as Head of International and Marketing for the French company. He created and was Managing Director of N.M.V (Video Edition and Distribution) in 1990, and then in 1992 became Editorial and Marketing Director at the video companies Fil à Film/Les Films de Ma Vie. He was nominated in 1992 Director General of the French Union of Video Publishers (SEV) and joined the Management Committee of the International Video Federation (IVF, Brussels). He was voted President of the IVF in january 1998, and was yearly re-elected, until he stepped down after a ten-year presidency. He chaired the PEVE (Perspective de l’Edition Video Européenne), which he set up in 1992, an event supported both by the Media Programme of the European Commission and the CNC (France), until he relinquished the presidency in 2007. Jean-Paul Commin joined France Télévisions Distribution in 1999 as Head of the Publishing Division (video, records, music publishing, books, merchandising) and became Chief Operating Officer in 2002, a responsibility he held until mid 2008. In addition, during 2004-2006, he was President of the Steering Committee for the Executive body of the European Audiovisual Observatory (Council of Europe). Currently, he is Counsel and member of the Bureau of ADEF (French Film Exporters Association), Chargé d’Affaires for the production company Les Armateurs (Kirikou, Les Triplettes de Belleville), member of the Educational Committee to the Cultural Industry Master (ESC, Dijon) and a cinema, animation and multimedia Expert with Poitou Charentes Cinéma. 6 Speakers: -Barbara Tonelli – Touscoprod (France): After her studies and a position at the European Council, Barbara worked as a PR for Minerva Pictures Group / Raro Video. In 2007, she became an associate producer at Art'Mell. Today, she is the content manager and co-founder of touscoprod, the first crowdfunding platform for independent movie projects (www.touscoprod.com). By helping these projects (from 15€), members of touscoprod become coprod, get access to exclusive content and advantages (invitation to the shooting, DVD, meetings with the cast & crew, movie premieres, etc.) and get a share of the earnings made by the film. -Alessandro Raja – Festival Scope (France): former Director of Sales of CELLULOID DREAMS. In Paris since 2003 to collaborate with COPRODUCTION OFFICE, after working in London for five years firstly for a festival (THE ITALIAN FESTIVAL), for a cinema (THE EVERYMAN) and then for an independent distributor (ARTIFICIAL EYE). -Mathilde Henrot - Festival Scope (France): she recently held the position as Director of Sales for MK2, where she worked for eight years, also handling acquisitions for international sales. -Gergő Csikos - Cinefil Co (Hungary): After graduating in International Management, business, communication & public relations, and writing a Thesis on “the future of distribution and cinemas in the age of digitalization” Gergő started to work at Digipost, a Film Production Company where he was camera operator, editor and director assistant. In 2010, he co-founded Cinefil-Co, a community-based independent Film distribution company -Peter Buckingham - UK Film Council (UK): Peter Buckingham has 30 years experience in the film industry at all levels of the business. He started as a cinema projectionist and quickly worked his way up in the commercial sector to managerial positions in exhibition and distribution. In both sectors he has performed almost every position it is possible to do. Most of his career has been spent as a hands on leader – either as a director or managing director of a division or a company. He has a huge and deep knowledge of all aspects of these two sectors. This combined with the close proximity in many cases with UK production – especially in his time at FilmFour (channel 4) made him a comparatively unique candidate for the position at the UK Film Council to be head of Distribution and Exhibition. In this capacity he has developed deep radical and far reaching strategies to achieve an extremely difficult objective – namely to encourage more and more people to watch a
