It is shown that C-positive segments are weakly visible in all four species which indicates a small amount of constitutive heterochromatin (CH). -

The genus is diagnosed and compared with related genera and important characters at the genus and species level are illustrated. The prey and foraging range of Cerceris fumipennis and its use for bio-surveillance of the Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) PI: Dr. Donald Chandler [email protected] 38 College Rd Rm 270 Spaulding Durham, NH 03824 Graduate Student: Morgan Dube University of New Hampshire [email protected] Collaborators: Jennifer Weimer, DRED March 2014 •Tree host associations aid in determining prey selection within certain forest types •Cerceris fumipennis seasonality overlaps with Buprestid prey allowing for documentation of seasonality of various secretive/difficult to survey species Funding support for this project was provided by the Northeastern States Research Cooperative (NSRC), a partnership of Northern Forest states (New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and New York), in coordination with the USDA Forest Service. http://www.nsrcforest.org Project Summary • Ash trees are a prominent feature in the northern forest region and are important to the biodiversity of this 26 million acre landscape. Destruction of large populations of ash can have severe ecosystem-level consequences. Currently, the greatest threat to ash trees comes from extensive and serious infestations of the Emerald Ash Borer, EAB (Agrilus planipennis). • Fortunately, Cerceris fumipennis, a predatory wasp, is recognized as presenting an extremely effective technique for locating and parasitizing adults of this serious pest recently introduced to New Hampshire (2013). Project Summary continued • The NH Department of Agriculture and Division of Forests regard an understanding of the biology of this wasp as being critical in development of their plans for detecting low density populations of EAB. • This project was to monitor two large colonies of this wasp. One at the Boscawen State Forest Nursery and another on private land in Epsom, NH. -

La Barque Creek Watershed is indeed a very high quality natural area and deserves the attention of all nature study aficionados. Dicerca pugionata – safe and sound! Ted C. MacRae3 One of my favorite beetle species in Missouri is Dicerca pugionata—a strikingly beautiful jewel beetle (family Buprestidae) found sporadically across the eastern U.S. Unlike most species in the genus, which breed in dead wood of various species of trees, D. pugionata larvae mine living stems of certain woody shrubs—namely alder (Alnus spp.), witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) and ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) (Nelson 1975). When I first began studying Missouri Buprestidae (way back in 1982), the species had just been reported from the state based on a single specimen (Nelson et al. 1982). I happened to stumble upon these beetles at what became my favorite collecting spot during the 1980s—Victoria Glades Natural Area, just south of St. Louis in Jefferson Co. For several years while I was visiting Victoria Glades, I found these beetles regularly during spring and fall on stems and branches of living ninebark plants growing within the ravines and along the toeslopes at the lower edges of the glades. -

In a lowland forest in northern Italy, Malaise traps were set in the canopy (n = 7) and ground layer (n = 7) and eleven beetles families (Buprestidae, Eucnemidae, Throscidae, Elateridae, Cantharidae, Dasytidae, Malachiidae, Tenebrionidae, Cerambycidae, Anthribidae, and Scolytidae) were compared for species richness and similarity of assemblages. Additionally it was investigated if species were associated with the forest layers studied and which of the families best qualified as bioindicator taxon. Finally, it was analyzed if similarity between the two layers was affected by season. The beetle assemblages in the two layers were significantly different, but species richness was similar. Eight species were significantly associated with the canopy and 15 species with the ground layer; for 16 of these this association is reported for the first time. Cerambycidae characte- rized the differences between ground and canopy best, as assemblages of this taxon were well separated; and these were signifi- cantly related to the composition of all families considered.
