    Portuguese Delegation of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament Press Release Ana Gomes visits Ethiopia 16 February 2019 - Ana Gomes starts today, in her capacity of Member of the European Parliament, a three-day visit to Ethiopia, the second most populated country in Africa and where the African Union has its headquarters. The visit follows an invitation from a non-partisan committee, headed by Eskinder Nega, journalist and human rights activist, arrested several times during the government of the former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the first of which right after the 2005 Ethiopia’s national elections. In these elections, Ana Gomes was the European Union’s Chief Observer of the Electoral Observation Mission in the country. The programme of the visit includes meetings with the new political and governmental authorities, with the president of the Ethiopian Electoral Commission, Birtukan Mideksa, with representatives of the opposition, with several civil society organisations, including journalists and activists, with the EU Delegation in Ethiopia and with the Embassy of Portugal. Eskinder Nega and Birtukan Mideksa are both two former political prisoners whose liberation and release Ana Gomes worked tirelessly for throughout the last years. This visit will allow to take stock of the current political environment in Ethiopia, a country whose political situation has seen a very positive development since Abiy Ahmed took the role of prime minister and started to put in place important economic and political reforms in the economic and political, in particular the end of the war with Eritrea and the release of all political prisoners.

    Ana Gomes Member of the European Parliament Born on February 9, 1954 in Lisbon Portugal Ana Gomes is a Member of the European Parliament, since 2004. Her main interests are the build up of a united Europe and the promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the EU and in the world. In the European Parliament, she tries to mainstream these concerns by being active in the fields of public liberties, security and defence, international relations and development. In this mandate (2014-2019), she is full member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, and of the Subcommittee for Security and Defence, as well as full member of the Delegation for the relations with the United-States and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean . She is substitute member on the Foreign Affairs Committee and on the Subcommittee on Human Rights. Ms. Gomes has been Rapporteur for Libya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the PCA with Indonesia, on the "EU CBRN Action Plan" report, the "Maritime Dimension of CSDP" report, on the "Human Rights and corruption" report, among other files. She was elected S&D Coordinator for the Special Committee on Terrorism and she is also Vice-Chair for the PANA Committee - Inquiry to investigate alleged contraventions and maladministration in the application of Union law in relation to money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion. Ana Gomes suspended her career as a diplomat to enter party politics in 2003. This is a comprehensive attempt to anal- yse and describe the reality of activists that are facing persecution, death threats, death, unfair trials and precluded from ascending to social dimensions within societal structures and work- place ranks, we have contacted some of them to facilitate an evaluation of the situation, these ac- tivists have been fighting towards the defence of Human Rights. Various contacts were made via telephone, firstly a presentation of the objectives of the re- port was carried out, in this process we noted mixed reactions, some activists were abrasive, as a result of way they have been slandered and all the insults projected against them; others pre- ferred that interviews were conducted in person, for fear of being auscultated by telephone.

    The Parliamentary Dimension of Defence Cooperation Netherlands EU Presidency Seminar Programme Amsterdam 14-15 March Cover photo: © European Union 2014 - European Parliament Welcome We are delighted to welcome you to Amsterdam and to the Netherlands EU Presidency Seminar “The Parliamentary Dimension of Defence Cooperation”. Anticipating the new EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy and the need for a concrete follow-up, the Netherlands Presidency aims to start a discussion on the strategy’s implications for the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) with a focus on deepening defence cooperation. An often forgotten dimension in this regard is the role of parliaments. Parliamentary support is vital to achieve a stronger CSDP and deeper defence cooperation. It is therefore important to discuss this relatively neglected aspect of European defence. It is with this aim in mind that the Netherlands Ministry of Defence and the Clingendael Institute are organising this seminar. This Netherlands EU Presidency seminar will focus on the involvement of national parliaments and the European Parliament in the EU’s security and defence policies. The aim of this seminar is to obtain a better understanding of the role of parliaments in strengthening CSDP and defence cooperation. In addition, the seminar will address parliamentary decision-making on the deployment of rapid reaction forces, but also broader political-strategic parliamentary commitment in relation to the Global Strategy process. The seminar is to deliver concrete recommendations and ideas on how to move forward on parliamentary involvement, also for the benefit of the Interparliamentary Conference (IPC) on CFSP/CSDP on 6-8 April 2016 in The Hague.
