October 2013 Abstract How democratisation affects a state's foreign policy is a relatively neglected problem in International Relations. In Indonesia's case, there is a limited, but growing, body of literature examining the country's foreign policy in the post- authoritarian context. Yet this scholarship has tended to focus on the role of Indonesia's legislature and civil society organisations as newly-empowered foreign policy actors. Scholars of Southeast Asian politics, meanwhile, have concentrated on the effects of Indonesia's democratisation on regional integration and, in particular, on ASEAN cohesion and its traditional sovereignty-based norms. For the most part, the literature has completely ignored the effects of democratisation on Indonesia's foreign ministry – the principal institutional actor responsible for foreign policy formulation and conduct of Indonesia's diplomacy. Moreover, the effect of Indonesia's democratic transition on key bilateral relationships has received sparse treatment in the literature. -
Ana Gomes Visits Ethiopia
Portuguese Delegation of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament Press Release Ana Gomes visits Ethiopia 16 February 2019 - Ana Gomes starts today, in her capacity of Member of the European Parliament, a three-day visit to Ethiopia, the second most populated country in Africa and where the African Union has its headquarters. The visit follows an invitation from a non-partisan committee, headed by Eskinder Nega, journalist and human rights activist, arrested several times during the government of the former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the first of which right after the 2005 Ethiopia’s national elections. In these elections, Ana Gomes was the European Union’s Chief Observer of the Electoral Observation Mission in the country. The programme of the visit includes meetings with the new political and governmental authorities, with the president of the Ethiopian Electoral Commission, Birtukan Mideksa, with representatives of the opposition, with several civil society organisations, including journalists and activists, with the EU Delegation in Ethiopia and with the Embassy of Portugal. Eskinder Nega and Birtukan Mideksa are both two former political prisoners whose liberation and release Ana Gomes worked tirelessly for throughout the last years. This visit will allow to take stock of the current political environment in Ethiopia, a country whose political situation has seen a very positive development since Abiy Ahmed took the role of prime minister and started to put in place important economic and political reforms in the economic and political, in particular the end of the war with Eritrea and the release of all political prisoners. -
Ana Gomes Is a Member of the European Parliament, Since 2004
Ana Gomes Member of the European Parliament Born on February 9, 1954 in Lisbon Portugal Ana Gomes is a Member of the European Parliament, since 2004. Her main interests are the build up of a united Europe and the promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the EU and in the world. In the European Parliament, she tries to mainstream these concerns by being active in the fields of public liberties, security and defence, international relations and development. In this mandate (2014-2019), she is full member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, and of the Subcommittee for Security and Defence, as well as full member of the Delegation for the relations with the United-States and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean . She is substitute member on the Foreign Affairs Committee and on the Subcommittee on Human Rights. Ms. Gomes has been Rapporteur for Libya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the PCA with Indonesia, on the "EU CBRN Action Plan" report, the "Maritime Dimension of CSDP" report, on the "Human Rights and corruption" report, among other files. She was elected S&D Coordinator for the Special Committee on Terrorism and she is also Vice-Chair for the PANA Committee - Inquiry to investigate alleged contraventions and maladministration in the application of Union law in relation to money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion. Ana Gomes suspended her career as a diplomat to enter party politics in 2003. She had joined the Portuguese Foreign Service diplomat in 1980 and served in the Portuguese Missions at the UN in New York and Geneva and in the Embassies in Tokyo and London. -

This histo rical meeting brought together two of the most inuential thinkers from the generation which rekindled the eld of studies on oral language and literacy during the second half of the 1970’s. During this meeting, Ana Maria de Oliveira Galvão, Maria Cristina Soares de Gouvêa and Ana Maria Rabelo Gomes, professors of History, Psychology and Anthropology of Education, sought to understand the context in which these authors’ most important works were created. -

Portugal's President of the Republic 2021-2026
PORTUGAL'S PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC 2021-2026 Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was re-elected on 24.01.2021 the President of the Portuguese Republic, for a second term that will begin on 09.03.2021. The results of the presidential elections were as follows: Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa – 60,7% (2.533.799 votos) Ana Gomes – 12,97% (541.345 votes) André Ventura – 11,9% (496.583 votes) João Ferreira – 4,32% (180.473 votes) Marisa Matias – 3,95% (164.731 votes) Tiago Mayan – 3,22% (134.427 votes) Vitorino Silva – 2,94% (122.734 votos) Presidential Powers The President represents the Portuguese Republic, guarantees national independence, the regular functioning of democratic institutions, and the Armed Forces’ supreme commander. He promulgates and blocks laws, accredits Portugal’s diplomatic representatives abroad, accepts foreign diplomatic representatives’ credentials, ratifies the international treaties, declares war, and makes peace. The President is also empowered to declare a state of Siege and a state of Emergency. Programme & Objectives Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was the only candidate that didn’t present any official programme. However, he made clear that his priorities focus on: ● Combat the pandemic situation; ● Support social justice; ● Fight poverty and exclusion; ● Fight radicalisation and extremism; ● Respect pluralism and difference; ● Recovery of employment and income; ● Promote a stable political system with credible and robust governance. Ups & Downs UP ↑ It came with no surprise that the previous President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, won with a large majority the 2021 Portuguese Presidential race, with 60,7% of total votes. As a candidate of the centre bloc (PS & PSD) Marcelo was the triumphant winner. -

Indonesian Foreign Policy in the Era of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (2004-2014) towards Myanmar in Supporting Democratization Windy Dermawan Chandra Purnama & Emil Mahyudin Universitas Padjajaran ABSTRACT This research attempts to explain why Indonesia support democratization in Myanmar. In this research, researchers use constructivism perspective to analyze Indonesia's foreign policy by exploring Indonesia's reasons for promoting democratization in Myanmar. This research uses qualitative methods by collecting data through interviews with a number of informants and documentation studies. Based on the results of data analysis, this research has found that Indonesia's foreign policy toward Myanmar in supporting democratization is based on consideration of domestic, regional and global ideas, values or norms. These norms and ideas are constructed so as to encourage the formation of an Indonesian identity which is the basis for the production and reproduction of Indonesia's interests in Myanmar in promoting democratization. Indonesia's desire to re-hold regional leadership, the restoration of its image as a democratic country, and a commitment to maintain world peace are part of the production and reproduction of discourses on Indonesia's interests which contribute to the formation of Indonesia's foreign policy towards Myanmar. Keywords: ASEAN, Democracy, Foreign Policy, Constructivism, Myanmar Riset ini berupaya menjawab mengapa Indonesia mendukung demokratisasi di Myanmar. Dalam riset ini, peneliti menggunakan perspektif konstruktivisme untuk menganalisis kebijakan luar negeri Indonesia melalui penggalian alasan Indonesia dalam mendorong demokratisasi di Myanmar. Riset ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pengumpulan data melalui wawancara terhadap sejumlah informan dan studi dokumentasi. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, riset ini menemukan bahwa kebijakan luar negeri Indonesia terhadap Myanmar dalam mendukung demokratisasi didasari oleh pertimbangan gagasan, nilai atau norma domestik, regional, dan global.
