Possible reconfiguration of the Meadow Lake edge with new topographic variation Flushing Meadows Corona Park Strategic Framework Plan 36 Quennell Rothschild & Partners | Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects Vision & Goals The river and the lakes organize the space of the Park. Our view of the Park as an ecology of activity calls for a large-scale reorganization of program. As the first phase in the installation of corridors of activity we propose to daylight the Flushing River and to reconfigure the lakes to create a continuous ribbon of water back to Flushing Bay. RECONFIGURE & RESTORE THE LAKES Flushing Meadows Corona Park is defined by water. Today, the Park meets Flushing Bay at its extreme northern channel without significantly impacting the ecological characteristics of Willow and Meadow Lakes and their end. At its southern end, the Park is dominated by the two large lakes, Willow Lake and Meadow Lake, created for shorelines. In fact, additional dredged material would be valuable resource for the reconfiguration of the lakes’ the 1939 World’s Fair. shoreline. This proposal would, of course, require construction of a larger bridge at Jewel Avenue and a redesign of the Park road system. The hydrology of FMCP was shaped by humans. The site prior to human interference was a tidal wetland. Between 1906 and 1934, the site was filled with ash and garbage. Historic maps prior to the ‘39 Fair show the Flushing To realize the lakes’ ecological value and their potential as a recreation resource with more usable shoreline and Creek meandering along widely varying routes through what later became the Park. -

CITY PARKS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 109 GRANTS THROUGH NYC GREEN RELIEF & RECOVERY FUND AND GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC GRANT APPLICATION NOW OPEN FOR PARK VOLUNTEER GROUPS Funding Awarded For Maintenance and Stewardship of Parks by Nonprofit Organizations and For Free Live Performances in Parks, Plazas, and Gardens Across NYC July 8, 2021 - NEW YORK, NY - City Parks Foundation announced today the selection of 109 grants through two competitive funding opportunities - the NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund and GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC. More than ever before, New Yorkers have come to rely on parks and open spaces, the most fundamentally democratic and accessible of public resources. Parks are critical to our city’s recovery and reopening – offering fresh air, recreation, and creativity - and a crucial part of New York’s equitable economic recovery and environmental resilience. These grant programs will help to support artists in hosting free, public performances and programs in parks, plazas, and gardens across NYC, along with the nonprofit organizations that help maintain many of our city’s open spaces. Both grant programs are administered by City Parks Foundation. The NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund will award nearly $2M via 64 grants to NYC-based small and medium-sized nonprofit organizations. Grants will help to support basic maintenance and operations within heavily-used parks and open spaces during a busy summer and fall with the city’s reopening. Notable projects supported by this fund include the Harlem Youth Gardener Program founded during summer 2020 through a collaboration between Friends of Morningside Park Inc., Friends of St. Nicholas Park, Marcus Garvey Park Alliance, & Jackie Robinson Park Conservancy to engage neighborhood youth ages 14-19 in paid horticulture along with the Bronx River Alliance’s EELS Youth Internship Program and Volunteer Program to invite thousands of Bronxites to participate in stewardship of the parks lining the river banks. -

This spring, we’ve organized a restoration cleanup and marsh planting at Plum Beach, a section of Gateway National Recreation Area and a major spawning beach for the ancient horseshoe crab. In May and June during the high tides, the crabs come ashore to lay their eggs as they’ve done for millions of years. This provides a critical food source for the many species of shorebirds that are migrating through New York City. Small fi sh such as mummichogs and killifi sh join in the feast as well. JAMAICA BAY RESTORATION PROJECTS: Since 1986, the Littoral Society has been organizing annual PROTECTING OUR MARINE LIFE shoreline cleanups to document debris and create a greater public awareness of the issue. Subsequently, Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene climatic warming melted glaciers and caused global sea level rise, flooding portions of the shelf and countless archaeological sites. Importantly, archaeological reconstructions of human subsistence and settlement patterns prior to the establishment of the modern coastline are incomplete without a consideration of the whole landscape once available to prehistoric peoples and now partially under water. -

REGIONAL GEOLOGIC FRAMEWORK OF THE INNER-CONTINENTAL SHELF OFF NEW YORK: BASELINE INFORMATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT William C. Schwab, E. Robert Thieler, Bradford Butman, and Marilyn R. Buchholtz ten Brink (U.S. Geological Survey, 384 Woods Hole Road, Woods Hole, MA 02543-2310) A focus for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Coastal and Marine Geology Program is mapping of the shallow Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with an emphasis on the heavily utilized areas of the sea floor offshore of major metropolitan centers. Our objective is to develop a regional synthesis of the sea-floor geology that will provide information for a wide range of management decisions and form a basis for further process-oriented investigations. In 1995, the USGS began a program, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), to generate geologic maps of the sea floor and shallow subsurface for coastal waters offshore of the New York — New Jersey metropolitan area and along the south shore of Long Island (Figure 1). Figure 1: Map showing location of the study area. Bathymetric contours are in meters. Boxed area shows extent of geophysical and geologic survey. The New York Bight Apex is one of the most heavily populated impacted coastal regions of the United States. Major issues in the New York — New Jersey area include: the long- term fate and effect of contaminated sediments; identification of acceptable sites for disposal of dredged material; identification of offshore sand and gravel resources; coastal erosion; and alterations of the benthic habitat caused by bottom trawling. A regional synthesis of the sea floor geology is needed to provide the information necessary to address these issues from a system-wide perspective. -

Three Wonder Walks (After the High Line) Featuring Walking Routes, Collections and Notes by Matthew Jensen Three Wonder Walks (After the High Line) The High Line has proven that you can create a des- tination around the act of walking. The park provides a museum-like setting where plants and flowers are intensely celebrated. Walking on the High Line is part of a memorable adventure for so many visitors to New York City. It is not, however, a place where you can wander: you can go forward and back, enter and exit, sit and stand (off to the side). Almost everything within view is carefully planned and immaculately cultivated. The only exception to that rule is in the Western Rail Yards section, or “W.R.Y.” for short, where two stretch- es of “original” green remain steadfast holdouts. It is here—along rusty tracks running over rotting wooden railroad ties, braced by white marble riprap—where a persistent growth of naturally occurring flora can be found. Wild cherry, various types of apple, tiny junipers, bittersweet, Queen Anne’s lace, goldenrod, mullein, Indian hemp, and dozens of wildflowers, grasses, and mosses have all made a home for them- selves. I believe they have squatters’ rights and should be allowed to stay. Their persistence created a green corridor out of an abandoned railway in the first place. I find the terrain intensely familiar and repre- sentative of the kinds of landscapes that can be found when wandering down footpaths that start where streets and sidewalks end. This guide presents three similarly wild landscapes at the beautiful fringes of New York City: places with big skies, ocean views, abun- dant nature, many footpaths, and colorful histories. -

MAPS INSIDE NEW YORK CITY AREA Health Advice on Eating Fish You Catch 1 Why We Have Advisories Fishing is fun and fish are an important part of a healthy diet. Fish contain high quality protein, essential nutrients, healthy fish oils and are low in saturated fat. However, some fish contain chemicals at levels that may be harmful to health. To help people make healthier choices about which fish they eat, the New York State Department of Health issues advice about eating sportfish (fish you catch). The health advice about which fish to eat depends on: Where You Fish Fish from waters that are close to human activities and contamination sources are more likely to be contaminated than fish from remote marine waters. In the New York City area, fish from the Long Island Sound or the ocean are less contaminated. Who You Are Women of childbearing age (under 50) and children under 15 are advised to limit the kinds of fish they eat and how often they eat them. Women who eat highly contaminated fish and become pregnant may have an increased risk of having children who are slower to develop and learn. Chemicals may have a greater effect on the development of young children or unborn babies. Also, some chemicals may be passed on in mother’s milk. Women beyond their childbearing years and men may face fewer health risks from some chemicals. For that reason, the advice for women over age 50 and men over age 15 allows them to eat more kinds of sportfish and more often (see tables, pages 4 and 6). -
