Bayly, Muzaffar Alam, Andre Wink, Chetan Singh and others. Two subsequent works on the eastern Rajasthan by S.P. Gupta and Dilbagh Singh and on the northern Rajasthan by G.S.L. Devra have added new dimensions to the whole issue of existing debate on the 18' century, a period of transition in the history of India. Therefore, the importance of the studies on Rajasthan assumes significance which contains a treasure house of archival records, hitherto largely unexplored. My work is consisted of eight chapters with an introduction and conclusion. The first chapter deals with the study of geographical and historical profile of the Rajasthan. The geographical factor such as types of soils, hills, river and vegetation always nourishes the economy of the region. The physical location of Rajasthan had influenced its history to a greater extent. The region bears the physical diversity and we can divide it into two parts namely in the fertile south eastern zone and the thar arid zone. It was bounded by the Mughal subas (provinces) like Multan, Sindh, Delhi, Agra, Gujarat and Malwa.

Today, Bhiwadi remains a major contributor to the economy of Rajasthan. The city slowly gained prominence on the world map with automobile behemoths, glass, steel and other companies setting up manufacturing units in the region. The strategic “Bhiwadi, Chopanki, Dharuhera and Khuskhera” region slowly began to take centrestage in the development of not only Rajasthan, but also India. The ow of Foreign Direct Investment in the region increased as the Government provided more physical and social infrastructure aiding development in the region. But what swings the scale in favour of this region is its strategic location. Situated on NH-8, this region oers direct connectivity to Delhi, Gurgaon, Jaipur and other important cities in the vicinity. Major real estate development also began to take place in view of the increasing demand from the service class in the region and even areas like Gurgaon and Manesar.

    PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Regional economic inequalities are generally an outcome of uneven distribution of physical and natural resources. Sometimes disparities in the levels of performance also emanate from lack of technical know-how, low level of human development, social inhibitions and virtual absence of initiatives on the part of those who govern the destiny of people. A good number of studies have been undertaken in India and outside which focus on the existing state of inequalities. While some studies attempt to measure inequalities among different countries, others analyse inter-regional or inter-state inequalities. Generally, these studies are based on secondary data, and tend to measure the existing level of inequalities. But very few researchers have enquired into the factors responsible for such disparities. Rajasthan is a developing state of the Indian sub continent, where Mother Nature has not been kind enough to provide a rich endowment of physical and natural resources. Notwithstanding a peaceful political environment and a rich heritage of Marwari entrepreneurship, the State has not registered a very high level of growth in agriculture and industries. Infrastructure development and conservation of scarce water resources have generally received a low priority in the process of planned development. The present study selected 97 indicators pertaining to 12 sectors. A simple weighted average of scores was used to rank 32 districts of the State according to the nature of their relationship with development. Such ranking was done first for each sector, and then a composite rank for all the indicators was assigned to each district. One novel experiment undertaken in this study was to rank the districts on the basis of allocation of plan outlays over the period 1993-2001.

Emergence of regional political order and a new notion of commercialisation widened the sphere of engagements of merchants and traders and this had enduring consequences for the economy of Rajasthan. This paper traces the trajectory of the structural changes that ensued from the political disintegration of the Mughal order and emergence of local princely governance. Specifically it looks at i) the emergence of the non-peasant sector in agriculture, ii) the rise of a cross-caste mercantile class in the state and iii) change in commercial relationships under the new governance between the principalities, traders, artisans and the merchants. The research is based on insights from rich archival primary sources from the Rajasthan State Archives in Bikaner, focusing primarily on careful and extensive examination of the Bahis, to ascertain the changes in the village structure that took place as the regional gentry tried to combat the political and financial crisis that it faced in the early 18th century.

Two-Third of India’s 1.25 billion people still depends on agriculture for their livelihood. In India, agriculture contributes about 17% of the total GDP and 10% of total export. With the growth of other sectors, the overall share of agriculture on GDP of the country has decreased. Agriculture with its allied occupation of animal husbandry and dairying forms the main basis of the economy of the Rajasthan. In the state, agriculture is the main occupation of the people. Almost 70% of its population is engaged in agriculture and allied pursuits for their livelihood. Rajasthan is predominately an agricultural state but, presently the state’s agriculture is facing many crises. Dry climate, poverty among farmers, droughts, famines, hailstorms, pests and diseases hampers, indebtedness etc. are most crises facing by the State’s farmer. Farmer’s socio-economic life is directly affected from agrarian crisis. The land use and crop pattern indicate great influence and control by environmental factors over agriculture inputs. In this context, this research paper covers performance and challenges in the agriculture of Rajasthan and agrarian crisis facing by Rajasthan and its impact on agricultural economy of state.
