This Week’s Meeting:

n n

o o

Today we heard from our outgoing exchange student, Elliott Neagle. Elliott heads to Japan in January 2013, d

d a highly suitable candidate for that country given his eloquence in his host nation’s tongue. Elliott had n

n prepared a Power Point presentation but time constraints did not permit its display as our Annual General

Meeting was also scheduled for today. Nonetheless, Elliott proved himself a worthy public speaker without e

e the assistance of modern electronics, going so far as to provide an impressive demonstration of the s

s Japanese language. s

a

a Elliott has grown up in Essendon and is a Year 11 student at Buckley Park Secondary t t College. His favourite subjects are Japanese, Media and Drama. He has a love of travel

and has spent some time in the U.K. visiting his extended family. He admitted to suffering o

o initial nerves at the Youth Exchange interview, but obviously overcame them to impress R

R the selection panel. He is looking forward to an amazing year immersing himself in

Japanese culture. We wish you well Elliott and look forward to your regular reports from e e the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’.

h h

t President Grant then opened our Annual General Meeting and Immediate Past President Stephen Roe

t

provided an extensive summary of our Club’s activities for 2011-12. One of Stephen’s aims at the start of f

f his term had been for everyone to finish the year happy with their efforts. He concluded today by saying if o

o some members felt they could have done more, it was never too late and that their contribution would

always be welcome. r

r e

e Treasurer Glenn Smith then presented the Club accounts t

t for 2011-12 showing that the Club was in a healthy t

t financial position. The only question from the floor queried e

e whether the balance of the Project Account at the end of l

l the year had been too high. President Grant responded s s saying that the aim was to have approximately $25,000 in

the account at 30 June each year to enable the incoming w

w Board to respond quickly to ‘New Year’ financial motions. e e The accounts received overwhelming endorsement from

the gathering. N N

President-Elect Boris Struk then announced his Board for 2013-14, thanking those who had agreed to

support him in his upcoming role: .

E

f As no resolutions had been submitted, President Grant then closed the Annual General Meeting.

o

o

After the meeting, Past President Stephen Roe admitted to

your editor that, in a glaring oversight, he had omitted to b

b thank Club Secretary Rob Thomas for his diligent efforts u

u throughout the year. A busy Club such as ours relies on an l

l efficient paper/email trail and Rob, the quiet achiever, C

C provided wonderful support to all members of Board. His

efforts were such that President Grant enlisted his help in y

y the same role this year, and President-Elect Boris Struk has r

r followed suit for 2013-14. When you’re on a good a

a thing………. Rob – apologies for the omission but sincere t t thanks for your hard work and valued assistance.

o Club Historian Steve Chandler is compiling more of the Club’s history and is

o

attempting to produce an electronic record of all important Club events. All

early correspondence has been scanned and stored on his computer. b b Recently he has scanned all of the Paul Harris Fellow recognition summaries

u

u that were held but has discovered there are a few missing, in particular l l Royce Abbey's original PHF. He would appreciate a copy of that if anyone

has one plus some of the very early PHF's of which there were possibly six, C

C th

including Royce's, at the time of the Club’s 50 anniversary in 1985.

y y He is also seeking copies of some of the later PHF summaries including

r r

those for Michael Mahoney, Cathy Nicou, Alf Puglia and Glenn Smith. If you a

a could provide an electronic copy it would be appreciated otherwise Steve t t can scan a paper copy and return it to you. If there are any other items that

o members think should be in the archives or if anybody would like a DVD of o what is currently held, please contact Steve.

Kenyan Project Launch

Last Thursday night saw 64 members and guests celebrate the launch of ‘New Hope for Widows and .

. Orphans’, one of two new Kenyan projects to commence this year. The enthusiastic crowd enjoyed c

c delicious African cuisine accompanied by wines generously donated by Graeme Wood, Tim Anderson and n

n Alf Puglia. Connie Maina gave an enlightening presentation about the plight of fatherless families in Kenya I

God with a very generous donation of $2,800 along with a commitment of $100 per month from the b b congregation of the AOG Parish in Airport West, both wonderful results. Overall nearly $6,000 was raised

towards the project. Thanks to all donors and to Simon Cookson and Tim Anderson for their assistance on

u

hundreds of people in the coming years.

b Essendon Central Probus Club Update u

u Club Member, Ian Hiscock spoke at our monthly meeting on Monday 19th l

l November. Ian told of his early life on a Wimmera farm and teenage and adult C

C life in Geelong and Essendon, and his Public Service and Neighbourhood Watch

voluntary work. Farm life back in the 50’s was vastly different to today; Ian y

y enthused to the many questions about his family farm. Another member, Ken r

r Smith, a former Police Officer, will speak at our meeting on January 21st and The a a Hon. Justin Madden, State Parliamentarian, former State Minister and ex Carlton

t th t AFL star, will speak on February 18 . Our December meeting doubles as our th

o Christmas function and will be held at Fredericks on Thursday, 6 December; we o

expect around 60 to attend. R R

Last Thursday, November 24th, a number of our members toured on the RACV Shuttle Bus to the RACV Club e e at Healesville. Our Club has planned a day trip to Phillip Island, including lunch at the Cowes RSL Club, on

th h h Thursday, February, 28 next. We’re still seeking prospective members and outsiders to join us on our

th th t

t three day Grampians trip which has been rescheduled to Tuesday April 9 to Thursday April 11 2013 -

f cost is $310. Maybe you know someone who may be interested! Our trip organiser is Keith Annand on f

o

r Last Monday, November 19 , President Shane Allan and I attended a Men’s Health Round Table convened r

by the Moonee Valley City Council – it is increasingly acknowledged that men’s health is a neglected area, e

e and it was great to participate in some of the ideas being put forward. Several of our members plan to t

t attend the monthly meeting of the Essendon Historical Society on Tuesday November 27th at which the t

t speaker will be Judy Maddigan, the former Speaker of State Parliament.. We’ve walking, pool and golf and e

e book swap groups which are fully active; movies, gardening, ten pin bowling and games/cards groups are

l l

under consideration. s

s

w Probus is an association of active retirees, many of whom are former or current Rotarians. Essendon w

Central Men’s Probus Club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Essendon in 1991. Our basic purpose is to e e enjoy each other’s fellowship and develop new friends, to keep our minds active, and to expand our

interests. We believe that our Probus Club is well worth considering for anyone aged 55 or older, who has N N left the work force through retirement or redundancy, or continues to work part time. Membership inquiries can be made to Shane Allan, President (9377 2311) or to Lawrie Gowan, Secretary (9337 7052).

Melbourne Swisse Color Run

Described as combining the exercise of a fun run with the adrenaline of a paint fight, the five kilometre .

. Swisse Color Run was held near Flemington Racecourse last Sunday. Participants dressed in white were c

n Funds raised from the event supported the Australian Paralympic Committee.

b

b A message from Rotary International President, Sakuji Tanaka

u

u l

l What is Rotary? When I ask Rotarians this question, they often give vague C

C answers. And when I asked myself this question, I had to think about it.

y y The key to increasing membership is for every Rotarian to be convinced that

r

r it’s good to be a Rotarian, and to convey that passion to others. In Rotary, we a a have a tendency to be humble and keep our achievements to ourselves. But

t t we must share them with those around us and with the world.

o o

To strengthen Rotary, we need more members. But unless those members R R are convinced of the benefits of the organisation and can share that passion

with others, expanding Rotary won’t be meaningful. e

e h

h If every Rotarian is happy about being a Rotarian and spreads the word with t

t a clear, unified message – if every Rotarian around the world can be his or

her own PR department – the combined, collective effect will be enormous. f f

o

o For most of my life, I have been a salesman. I learned long ago that being a good salesman is not enough.

You must also have a good product. If you are a good salesman, you will make the first sale. But if you do r r

not have a good product, you will make only the first sale. You will not make the second. e

e

t t

It is not enough to bring new members into Rotary. We want them to stay. We want the new, young t

t members to become long time members. We want them to be Rotary leaders in 10, 20, or 30 years. e

e l

l How do we do this? We have to look at our product. We have to look at Rotary not with our own eyes, but s s with new eyes. When we invite a new member to join and that person’s answer is no, we should ask why.

This is not to pressure someone into joining. It is to find out more information. What are the obstacles to w

w membership? Is it an inconvenient meeting time? Is it too much of a time commitment? Is it something else e e that we have not thought of?

N N We need to ask questions, and we need to open ourselves to the answers. We cannot say, “No, we will not do this,” just because we have never done it before.

“When I was a lad, growing up in the Port, Mum would send me down to the corner shop with a few r r shillings and I’d come back with five pounds of potatoes, two loaves of bread, three pints of milk, a pound

e of cheese, a packet of tea and a dozen eggs. You can’t do that these days. Too many security cameras.”

e t

t t t Q. Why did the Port Power supporter cross the road?

A. To start a fight with a complete stranger, for no reason what so ever.

e

e l

l s s Three women with footy-fan husbands are discussing their relationships.

The first says, “My husband follows the Lions and let me tell you our sex life is like one premiership after w w another.”

e The second says, “My husband is a Crows man and every night is like the back-to-back flags of 1997 and e

'98.” N N They then look at their friend, who hasn't yet said a thing. “What’s wrong?“ they ask as their friend starts sobbing. “Well,” she says hesitantly, “my husband supports the 'Power', and all he does is sit on the end of the bed and tell me how wonderful it's going to be.”
