. President: Grant Sheldon Editorial Executive: Stephen Roe c c Volume 78 Issue 21 Tuesday 27th November 2012 n n I I This Week’s Meeting: n n o o Today we heard from our outgoing exchange student, Elliott Neagle. Elliott heads to Japan in January 2013, d d a highly suitable candidate for that country given his eloquence in his host nation’s tongue. Elliott had n n prepared a Power Point presentation but time constraints did not permit its display as our Annual General Meeting was also scheduled for today. Nonetheless, Elliott proved himself a worthy public speaker without e e the assistance of modern electronics, going so far as to provide an impressive demonstration of the s s Japanese language. s s E E f f o o b b u u l l C C y y Elliott and his Counsellor, Graeme Wood A fine pair of exchangees, Elliott and Charlotte r r a a Elliott has grown up in Essendon and is a Year 11 student at Buckley Park Secondary t t College. His favourite subjects are Japanese, Media and Drama. He has a love of travel and has spent some time in the U.K. visiting his extended family. He admitted to suffering o o initial nerves at the Youth Exchange interview, but obviously overcame them to impress R R the selection panel. He is looking forward to an amazing year immersing himself in Japanese culture. We wish you well Elliott and look forward to your regular reports from e e the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’. h h t President Grant then opened our Annual General Meeting and Immediate Past President Stephen Roe t provided an extensive summary of our Club’s activities for 2011-12. One of Stephen’s aims at the start of f f his term had been for everyone to finish the year happy with their efforts. He concluded today by saying if o o some members felt they could have done more, it was never too late and that their contribution would always be welcome. r r e e Treasurer Glenn Smith then presented the Club accounts t t for 2011-12 showing that the Club was in a healthy t t financial position. The only question from the floor queried e e whether the balance of the Project Account at the end of l l the year had been too high. President Grant responded s s saying that the aim was to have approximately $25,000 in the account at 30 June each year to enable the incoming w w Board to respond quickly to ‘New Year’ financial motions. e e The accounts received overwhelming endorsement from the gathering. N N President-Elect Boris Struk then announced his Board for 2013-14, thanking those who had agreed to support him in his upcoming role: . c c Vice-President Anne Rogers Immediate Past President Grant Sheldon n n I I Secretary Rob Thomas Treasurer Sam Tartaglia n n Assistant Treasurer Michael Pepi Club Service Barbara Wyatt o o Community Simon Cookson d d Fellowship Neil Henderson n International Stephen Roe n Voc/New Gens/Foundation Lisa Lowcock e e s s President Grant advised that as no further nominations had been received, he was pleased to confirm Lisa s s Lowcock as President-Nominee (President-Elect 2013-14). E E f f As no resolutions had been submitted, President Grant then closed the Annual General Meeting. o o After the meeting, Past President Stephen Roe admitted to your editor that, in a glaring oversight, he had omitted to b b thank Club Secretary Rob Thomas for his diligent efforts u u throughout the year. A busy Club such as ours relies on an l l efficient paper/email trail and Rob, the quiet achiever, C C provided wonderful support to all members of Board. His efforts were such that President Grant enlisted his help in y y the same role this year, and President-Elect Boris Struk has r r followed suit for 2013-14. When you’re on a good a a thing………. Rob – apologies for the omission but sincere t t thanks for your hard work and valued assistance. o o R R President Grant’s thought for the day: ‘Don’t aspire to become irreplaceable; if you can’t be e e replaced, you can’t be promoted!’ h h t t f f New Member Proposal: o o Name: John Odgers r r Employer: RMIT University e e Position: Senior Lecturer and Program Director t t Classification: Tertiary Education t t e e l l City 2 Sea Fun Run s s The Club Projects account is $240 better off thanks to the w w efforts of six members who volunteered as marshalls for the 11 e e November event. E E f f o Club Historian Steve Chandler is compiling more of the Club’s history and is o attempting to produce an electronic record of all important Club events. All early correspondence has been scanned and stored on his computer. b b Recently he has scanned all of the Paul Harris Fellow recognition summaries u u that were held but has discovered there are a few missing, in particular l l Royce Abbey's original PHF. He would appreciate a copy of that if anyone has one plus some of the very early PHF's of which there were possibly six, C C th including Royce's, at the time of the Club’s 50 anniversary in 1985. y y He is also seeking copies of some of the later PHF summaries including r r those for Michael Mahoney, Cathy Nicou, Alf Puglia and Glenn Smith. If you a a could provide an electronic copy it would be appreciated otherwise Steve t t can scan a paper copy and return it to you. If there are any other items that o members think should be in the archives or if anybody would like a DVD of o what is currently held, please contact Steve.
