The long hair that grew to his hips had reached a glistening damp, yet his broad shoulders that would never have him mistaken as a woman exuded a peculiar sensuality. An intrepid beauty in his visage that would turn the head of anyone he walked passed was now clad in a sharp, cold murderous intent. In contrast, the white adorned a man built like a rock. While he was not tall by traditional convention, not an inch of his body was spared from his muscles that swelled to an armor-esque degree. Through the ferocious fighting spirit dwelling within, that brought to mind a large, carnivorous beast, his brawny body pushing up through his clothing must have been one tempered through real combat. With a few meters open between the two sides, neither showed the slightest twitch. For more than the past few minutes, they had stood frozen like this. The petty yells of street thugs resonated from the night shopping district below. Those threatening complaints to intimidate another, when heard from a roof shrouded in true bloodlust, failed to reach the level of a child’s quarrel.

    French Journal For Media Research – n° 6/2016 – ISSN 2264-4733 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION, THE CULTURE OF MANGA Christiana Constantopoulou Professeure de Sociologie de la Communication Université Panteion, Athènes - Grèce Manga and Anime The popularity of anime and manga has helped westerners gain a broader understanding of Japanese culture. Manga is a generic term for all graphic novels and comic books originally published in Japan. Manga is read either in serialized comic books, monthly magazines, or graphic novels. All formats are available in English translation, graphic novels, however, are the most common and can be found in both major bookstore chains and local comic shops. The graphic novels are usually presented in "manga-style," meaning a right-to-left format. The word Manga, when translated directly, means “whimsical drawings”. Manga are typically 'comic books' as the West understands them; rather, they represent pieces of Japanese culture and history. The 'manga' style has an extensive history, beginning sometime in the 10th century; scrolls from that period depict animals as part of the 'upper class', behaving as a typical human would in similar situations. Such scrolls would go on to be known as the Chōjū giga or “The Animal Scrolls”. Scrolls found later on in the 12th century would depict images of religion such as the Gaki Zoshi (Hungry Ghost Scrolls) and the Jigoku zoshi (Hell Scrolls). While both dealt with various aspects of religion, unlike “The Animal Scrolls”, these provided a more instructive viewpoint, rather than a comedic style. Manga are more significant, culturally, than Western comic books (though many fill the same role).

In Abgrenzung zu den japanischen Manga werden Comics aus Südkorea als Manwha und Comics aus dem chinesischem Raum als Manhua bezeichnet. Im Westen bezeichnete man mit Manga zunächst meist nur Comics aus Japan, mittlerweile wird der Begriff aber vor allem von Comicverlagen auch zunehmend für Comics aus anderen Ländern verwendet, die sich am Stil japanischer Produktionen orientieren. Während sich im englischen Sprachraum für von englischsprachigen Künstlern gezeichnete Comics im Manga- Stil mittlerweile der Begriff „original English-language manga“ (oder kurz „OEL manga“) eingebürgert hat, gibt es im Deutschen bislang keine vergleichbare einheitliche Definition. 1.2. Geschichte der Manga Das Wort ‚Manga’ taucht in Titel japanischer Bücher Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts auf, bedeutet da aber eher eine Art Ansammlung vieler verschiedener Bilder, oft mit übertriebenen Zügen, die ins Karikatureske gehen, die aber noch nichts mit den heutigen erzählenden Formen des Comics zu tun haben.
