Title: “Better than we”: landscapes and materialities of race, class, and gender in pre- emancipation colonial Saba, Dutch Caribbean Issue Date: 2017-02-09 Page | 47 Chapter 4: Saba in the Documentary Record This chapter outlines the processes involved in documentary research, and outlines the colonial history of Saba, from first sightings by Europeans to the early twentieth century, with the abandonment of Middle Island and Palmetto Point. A significant proportion of the history recounted herein is derived from original archival and historical newspaper research by the author, which is indicated by references to archive locations and their indexes that do not include an adjoining secondary source reference. In particular, it focuses on the oral and documentary history concerning free and enslaved Sabans of African descent. This includes the first arrival of enslaved Africans to the island, the rise and fall of the plantation economy, the emergence of free Sabans of African descent, laws pertaining to the institution of slavery, emancipation as it occurred on Saba in 1863, and its aftermath. The sources and their history A wide variety of sources were employed throughout this research in several collections worldwide. The most important sources for seventeenth and eighteenth colonial documents have been the Calendar of State Papers through the British National Archives (herein abbreviated to the BNAr), and the Dutch National Archives in The Hague (herein abbreviated to DNAr). The National Archives of Curaçao (herein abbreviated to the NArC) holds two important collections of correspondence between Lt. -

Roos) This research has been carried out in the framework of project: ‘erosion control and nature recovery’ managed by among others Jan Jaap van Almenkerk (Wayaká Advies BV).The project serves as a course of the Msc. Hydrology programme at the VU university of Amsterdam. 1 Abstract On Bonaire, special municipality of the Netherlands, there is a big problem with erosion. In and around the capital Kralendijk, most areas have sparse vegetation and/or are paved. Intense rainfall events (such as those occurring on Bonaire) can loosen the soil material, after which it is transported away towards the ocean by (rain)water flowing over the surface (Koster, 2013). Not only causes this a loss of fertile soil, it also has consequences for aquatic life and plants along the coast, such as the coral reefs of Bonaire and the species which depend on them (Bak et al, 2005). An erosion (hotspot) map could be a start to determine why, where and how action could be taken to reduce erosion and gives input for the type of measure that may be suited for such an area. Using the model of Borselli, an hotspot map reckoning factors such as hydrologic and soil properties, land use, landcover and connectivity is created. Critical erosion areas (including urban/paved areas) are now imaged and measures can be undertaken or improved to enhance erosion management. -

Expectedly December 15th 20081 The Netherlands Antilles will end; St. Eustatius will get the status of a special municipality of the Netherlands. The population as of January 1st 2005 includes 2584 inhabitants2. On this moment, the high degree of imported products and services results in a negative trade balance. This is an unwanted situation for the developing island. The main problem is therefore formulated as follows: What new business activities are promising for St. Eustatius and how can these be developed? Framework The first chapter includes an introduction of the island and the main problem. Chapter 2 provides a framework to understand the followed steps. After the current situation is analyzed in chapter 3, the report consists of two parallel parts: chapter 4, which provides criteria for the alternatives, and chapter 5 and 6, which results in alternatives for new businesses. An important technique for analyzing data is the use of interviews. This technique is chosen because of the small size of the island and therefore limited data availability. An improvement in the trade balance can be achieved by two main economic possibilities: increasing export and import substitution, on which this research is concentrated. -
