Fees (per year) £7,450

Our Foundation Degree will enable you to develop the creative, technical and employability skills essential for working in today’s highly diverse performing arts industry. The course has, at its heart, an approach to actor training that sits outside the ‘applied Stanislavski’ model that dominates actor training in the UK. It looks to Europe and beyond, to the schools of training characterised by the teachings of Jacques Lecoq, Phillippe Gaulier, Michael Chekhov and Monica Pagneux, and further developed in the UK by John Wright and companies like ‘Told By An Idiot’, ‘Rash Dash’, ‘Red Ladder’ and ‘The Rude Mechanicals’.

Some of the subject areas you will study … Crafting performance; playing the object; playing the mask; creative voice; creative body; the playful actor; research in practice; the actor and the ensemble; playing Shakespeare.

As well as having a passion for performance, Victoria had previously studied at City College Plymouth and really enjoyed her experience. “For a long time I dedicated myself to my family. I’m a full time mum of five and have a husband in the marines who regularly gets posted away. I had previously studied hairdressing at college straight from school, but for various reasons I chose not to pursue it as a career. Alongside raising a family, I was doing lots of acting and it was my sister who suggested I come along to the College and get a degree in something I absolutely love, and with that, my decision was made. The highlight of studying here is being able to gain a qualification whilst getting to act, dance and sing every day! It’s been great meeting new people and making friends for life. The lecturers have been absolutely amazing too! With five children to care for, there has never been a problem getting them to appointments or being home with them when they are unwell. I have never been afraid to let my tutors know if I have any issues getting to lectures and they have been really supportive in helping me balance my studies alongside my personal commitments. I studied my Access to HE course here and now my foundation degree and I have plans to complete my BA (Hons) here too. I will be looking to complete my PGCE as I would love to become a drama teacher and pass on to others, all of the amazing things that I will continue to learn and experience here as my studies progress. VICTORIA I would not want to study anywhere else! I’ve had such a lovely experience, this is where I am staying! For anyone considering this pathway as an option, do it and don’t turn BUDD back. It can be challenging but when you get your grades, it makes it all worthwhile.” Creative Actor, Foundation Degree

I chose to study part-time alongside my final two years as a Royal Navy officer; this greatly assisted my transition into the construction industry. In order to make the change, I felt I needed an industry- specific higher education qualification, so the HNC programme seemed like the perfect training route for me. I enjoyed all the HNC modules and found the focus on sustainable aspects of construction particularly interesting. I was particularly keen to learn about construction contracts - an area that I expected to be involved with in my new career - as well as design and IT. I also enjoyed being able to draw on my own experience as a manager, for example on the construction management module, where I was able to share my prior knowledge and experience with my peers. Returning to education as a mature student was made possible by financial support from my employer and a flexible shift-work pattern. The Armed Forces supports education outside of work in the form of enhanced learning credits, and I made good use of this funding to minimise personal cost. Without having attained a higher education qualification, I would not have been able to successfully transition into a new sector. Having left the Royal Navy in 2019, I began my new LEE role with Faithful+Gould in Exeter. I continued with my studies having started a BSc in Construction Management and hope to continue to Royal Institution of FALLOWS Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accreditation thereafter. I would encourage those thinking about a career change Construction, to consider the options available at City College.” Higher National Certificate

28 www.cityplym.ac.uk I 01752 305300 I [email protected] I AM CITY Before studying at City College, Stephen worked as an independent games developer, running his own COLLEGE small business. He decided to enrol at the College because he wanted to gain a formal, university-level qualification. “I spoke to the course leader at an open day and she explained that the course has a holistic approach, covering all aspects of game design, which really appealed to me. The course was flexible, taught by lecturers with expert knowledge and I was given the space and time to experiment. I had the opportunity to explore all avenues of game design and discover my own passion. I developed my skills and by the second year I was able to specialise in the area of game design that interested me most. There was regular support from tutors and advice on all aspects of student life, from mental health to finance and housing. At City College, there is always someone on hand to talk to, whatever the issue. I was able to return to education slightly later in life because it 'felt easy'-the College is centrally located and I was able to secure a student loan to finance my studies. City College was the bridge between working as a programmer and working in a creative arts team. In my current role, I use 3D modelling software and everything is done digitally. I’m excited to be working as part of a team who will be producing games that will be available on the high street! My advice for anyone considering studying games design at City College is to make sure the course is the right STEPHEN option for you and that you’re willing to commit your time to it. You need strong self-motivation to succeed, which will really help you achieve what you want to.” CHAPMAN Game Design and Production, Foundation Degree

38 www.cityplym.ac.uk I 01752 305300 I [email protected] I AM CITY After leaving school Cleopatra worked part-time alongside COLLEGE her A Level studies and eventually secured a place at the University of Plymouth to study mathematics. Whilst studying for her degree Cleopatra discovered her passion for the applied elements of the subject and decided to pursue a career in engineering. “I am currently studying my Foundation Degree part-time as I am also doing an Apprenticeship through Babcock. This combination of learning really works for me as it allows me to gain the relevant qualifications and experience needed for my chosen career. It also develops my fundamental understanding of the theoretical and practical elements of mechanical engineering and allows me to interact with people from a diverse range of employers. This has given me a broader understanding of the diversity of job roles within the engineering sector. I chose the Foundation Degree as it underpins all of the practical learning from my Apprenticeship. I was also impressed by the diversity of students on the course. I was hesitant about being one of the oldest in a classroom full of 18 year olds, with priorities far different from my own, but there are so many people from all walks of life and with different aspirations which has made collaborating with my fellow students much more interesting. Balancing study and full-time work requires a great deal of commitment. I feel that because of this, I have become more productive and proactive in my workplace as I have invested in it, both personally and financially. You also need to have a well organised schedule and learn to prioritise and seek the right support if you need it. I am always looking for opportunities to grow academically; whether that’s through my ambition to achieve a Master’s, CLEOPATRA a Chartership or any other form of personal development. There is so much support and encouragement from lecturers at the College to help you fulfil your ambitions, whatever THATCHER they may be and I would encourage anyone thinking about returning to education to just go for it. You won’t regret it!” Mechanical Engineering, Foundation Degree

40 www.cityplym.ac.uk I 01752 305300 I [email protected] I AM CITY Helena’s passion for hospitality was ignited after studying a level 3 qualification in patisserie and confectionery at COLLEGE the College. She then progressed to a Foundation Degree and is currently undertaking a top-up degree at the University of Plymouth. “I have an ever-growing interest in hospitality and tourism and the Foundation Degree seemed the perfect course to give me the skills I would need to help me achieve my goals. The content seemed interesting and it was new and different to anything I’ve studied before. In addition, the support offered, the opportunities available and the lecturers were all reasons I chose to study a university-level course at the College. I am forever grateful that I did! I can honestly say that I enjoyed everything about my course. My fellow students were wonderful to be around and my lecturers were amazing people who offered support at every turn. After experiencing negative changes in my life, they helped wherever they could. They made it known that they were always available and ready to give support if I needed anything. On top of this, there were many fun visits to various places around the City and elsewhere, but mostly, the course challenged me, pushing me to improve myself and to try new things. I am currently studying my top-up degree at the University of Plymouth in Hospitality, Tourism and Events Management, a course I would never have attended if it wasn’t for City College. After graduating, I plan to spend a year or two working in industry before completing a masters degree, ideally in international tourism or marketing, either in the UK or abroad. For those thinking about studying this course, or studying HELENA at City College, I say do it! You will not regret it. My years spent at the College have been the best years of my life so far. It has helped me grow so much as a person. I joined STOCKWELL as a shy, anxious girl who feared anything new. Now I am a confident, outgoing woman, planning a future to be proud of.” Hospitality and Tourism Management, Foundation Degree

50 www.cityplym.ac.uk I 01752 305300 I [email protected] I AM CITY Before joining the College, Scott was in full-time employment in the marine engineering industry. Having a COLLEGE full-time job and a young family meant that Scott needed to study part-time and City College Plymouth offered the flexible study option that would help him fulfil his aspirations. “I was already employed in the marine sector so I knew that I wanted to develop my knowledge of the industry to boost my career prospects. I felt that the best way to do this was to return to education as you need extensive knowledge of marine systems and materials to get ahead and stand out from the crowd. There are so many great things that you get to do on the course. One of the most enjoyable experiences during my time here was getting to put my industry experience into practice by building a fully autonomous radio controlled boat that had to complete a variety of tasks. Working as a team to deliver the project to cost and on time meant that I learnt vital skills I can directly apply to the workplace. As an adult learner it can be difficult to get back into the classroom. The College and teaching staff however, are excellent at putting you at ease, so whatever your background they will really push you to achieve. I was never particularly great at maths but my lecturer completely turned this around. My knowledge of the subject and my confidence increased dramatically and I went on to achieve 80% in the analytical methods module! This is something I could never have dreamed of achieving before coming here. Gaining my Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering has given me a better understanding of the diversity of the subject. I now feel more than capable of pursuing my career aspirations within the company that I work for. SCOTT With the support of my employers, I would love to achieve my BSc (Hons). The course is certainly a great stepping- stone for those who want to progress to higher level study RENNIE and has given me the drive to continue my education. For those considering studying this course, I would say it's definitely worth doing! I would also say make sure you are Marine Engineering, prepared for the hard work and learn to prioritise. I studied Foundation Degree the course alongside my full-time job and becoming a parent for the first time. It was hard work but was definitely rewarding!”

As a player for Plymouth Albion RFC, he moved straight on to studying for a sports-based foundation degree at the College after completing his A Levels at Exeter College. “I chose to study at City College because as someone who knows exactly what they want to do career-wise, the learning environment is perfect. The training I’ve received has been hands-on and professional, and I even get to work with elite athletes. My lecturers understand my career ambitions and have focused my training on that goal. I came to the course already equipped with knowledge of the field, but my training has pushed me further and taught me how to apply it in real-life situations. Gaining this vocational experience wouldn’t be possible without the College’s links to a range of professional sport clubs, which I get to work with on a frequent basis. In the competitive industry of sport, employability is everything, and these experiences have been perfect in getting me work- and industry-ready. The course is also ideal for adult learners like me who want to earn a degree qualification without sacrificing work. I currently play for Plymouth Albion RFC, so the course’s flexibility in allowing me to continue with my commitments while I study has been amazing. I can stay on in the club without having to worry about catching up with work, or missing anything important. Studying the course has already opened up some incredible doors - I’ve already gained employment in the industry after my first year here. It’s extremely rewarding to see my training and studying pay off, and proves that DEVON pursuing this degree was absolutely the right decision. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the College so far, JEWSBURY and look forward to completing my third and final year. Regardless of past experience, if you know what you want to do and have a passion for your subject, the lecturers Strength Conditioning and will go out of their way to help you get the experience you need to stand out from the rest. I couldn’t recommend Sports Coaching, the course enough.” Foundation Degree
