Bolsonaro picks Army chief to ease tensions with military THE appointment of the Brazilian army’s former chief health officer as the new army commander is an effort by President Jair Bolsonaro to heal a rift created by his firing of the defence minister and the subsequent removal of the top generals of all three military branches, analysts said yesterday. Gen. Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, responsible for the army’s human resources, was appointed army chief Wednesday following the hasty departure of the leaders of Brazil’s army, navy and air force. The three men were forced out a day after Bolsonaro summarily fired retired army Gen. Fernando Azevedo e Silva as defence minister. There has been little transparency around this week’s events, as neither the president nor the Defence Ministry explained what caused the change in leadership. Military and political experts said the unexpected firings, which some described as a “bomb,” were Brazil has the suffered the second highest death toll from Covid-19 in the world. partly the result of the commanders’ reluctance to serve Bolsonaro’s political interests. Groups urge pressure on Mexico to save tiny vaquita porpoise

MEXICO CITY – Environmental groups called Thursday for an international ban on trade in a range of Mexican seafood and wildlife, seeking to force Mexico to do more to save the vaquita marina porpoise, the world’s most endangered marine mammal. The United States already has an embargo on imports of shrimp from the upper Gulf of California. Also known as the Sea of Cortez, the body of water is the only place where the vaquita lives, and as few as ten remain. The Natural Resources Defence Council, the Centre for Biological Diversity and two other groups said in an open letter that Mexico has failed to enforce a ban on fishermen using gill nets, which trap vaquitas. The nets are set to catch totoaba, an endangered fish whose swim bladder is considered a delicacy in China and is worth thousands of dollars. “Only the strongest international pressure will force Mexico to get lethal Papier-mache replicas of the critically endangered porpoise known as the vaquita marina are displayed on a blue plastic fishing nets out of the water before these sheet in front of the National Palace during a World Wildlife Fund event calling on the Mexican government to take little porpoises disappear forever,” wrote additional steps to protect the world’s smallest marine mammal, in Mexico City. Venice bans cruise ships from entering historic centre ITALIAN authorities have approved a ban on cruise ships entering the historic centre of Venice. The country’s culture minister said on Wednesday that the decision came in response to a request from UN cultural body Unesco. Large ships will now have to dock at the city’s industrial port until a permanent solution is found. Critics argue the ships cause pollution and erode the foundations of the city, which suffers from regular flooding. On Wednesday, Italian ministers agreed that large cruise and container ships would no longer be able to enter the city’s Giudecca canal, which leads to the historic St Mark’s Square. Culture Minister Dario Franceschini hailed the move, which he described as “a correct decision, awaited for years”. Dutch government to let 3,500 fans watch Eurovision Song Contest

THE Eurovision Song Contest has been given permission to let 3 500 fans watch in person as part of a trial by the Dutch government. The annual musical extravaganza will be staged at Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena in May, after being cancelled last year. Under the plan, the venue would be half full and fans would need a negative Covid test before being allowed in. Eurovision organisers welcomed the decision and said they would “consider the options now available”. They said they would “announce more details in the coming weeks on how we can safely admit audiences to the Ahoy venue in Rotterdam should the situa- tion allow”. They added that the health and safety of attendees “remains our top priority” and that all artists and their delega- tions will follow a “strict protocol”. The announcement follows a similar trial involving 1 500 fans at a music fes- tival near Amsterdam in March, while 5 000 spectators were allowed to cheer on the Netherlands in a World Cup football qualifier tomorrow. Olympian tried to smuggle $150m of cocaine AN Australian Olympic kayaker and his brother have been found guilty of attempting to smuggle A$200m ($152m; £109m) of cocaine into the country. Nathan Baggaley and Dru Baggaley will be sentenced later this month. Both have pleaded not guilty. Dru and another man were arrested in 2018 after a dramatic police chase at sea that also involved the navy and air force. Nathan purchased the boat used in the incident. Dru and the other man, Anthony Draper, made an 11-hour journey in June 2018 to meet up with a foreign ship that was carrying the drugs. However, they were spotted by surveillance planes and followed by a navy ship. Footage captured Dru throwing packages of cocaine overboard while Draper attempted to get away from the ship. They were later caught by a Queensland police vessel off the coast and arrested by armed officers. P R O HOROSCOPES S A Aries - Be patient if you find yourself arguing with a N friend or workmate. Ask people what they think rather D than trying to guess their feelings. Someone may be going through a tough time and they would appreciate a little C understanding. Talking to a friend who lives overseas will O give you some idea of what life is like in their country. N S Taurus - You've always been careful with your money and resources. A partner seems to have no money sense at all. If finances are causing tension between you, try to make other aspects of your relationship as stress-free as possi- ble. This isn't a time when you want to be at odds with each other. Z Gemini - Everyone seems to want to talk to you and you I can't concentrate when your mobile phone keeps beeping. You don't want to be reminded of every message re- T ceived. Disabling repeating alerts altogether is one way S to avoid these annoying distractions. When you have time, you will get back to everyone.

Cancer - You are sensitive and kind. You are also highly intuitive. You can sense it when people are being dishon- est and you will easily spot their hidden motivations. That's why anyone who tries to manipulate you is unlikely to get away with it. You might also warn a friend or loved one to be careful in a certain person's presence. R E X Leo - Plans need to be changed at a moment's notice. You would not do this if you could avoid it but you have good reason to pull out of some arrangements. Your partner or M a close friend will not understand and will accuse you of O being deliberately awkward. Their response will turn a R stable situation upside down. G A N Virgo - A colleague's mistakes is evidence they aren't as capable to carry out some aspects of the job as they thought they would be. Resist the urge to criticise. Once their errors are discovered a boss or senior colleague will step in and they will see to it that your workmate gets proper training.

Libra - It may be because you wake up in a more posi- P tive frame of mind that it feels like there is no end to the H amount you can get through, cope with and enjoy. Whatever you plan to do, don't be surprised to discover A you will get on faster and feel more focused with the min- N imum of company. T O M Scorpio - Emotional relationships can be improved through more open communication. Go out of your way to express your feelings. If there is something you need to get off your chest but you have no one to talk to, write it all down in a notebook. A flexible approach will serve you well in projects involving a number of people. M Sagittarius - It may be due to health reasons, financial A ones or a lack of resources that you will have to put some plans on hold for the time being. Once you accept this you R might discover some of these ideas weren't right for you Y after all and the postponement will turn out to be a bless- ing in disguise. W O Capricorn - A platonic relationship is showing signs of changing. Someone needs to feel they mean more to you R than just being a friend. This could come as a surprise T when you are quite content with the way things are be- H tween you. Be honest about how you feel so there are no further misunderstandings.

Aquarius - Unless you stay focused, all your plans will M fly out of the window. If you want to achieve your aims, O you need to stick to plans and timetables. There are a lot T of ifs and buts. You will achieve what you set out to do H but only if you are willing to put time and effort into it. E R

Pisces - A close relationship is changing. You have been G sensing this for a while. Your partner needs more excite- O ment. You feel you can't give them what they are look- O ing for. You aren't sure where you stand and this makes you worried about the future. It is time for a heart-to-heart S discussion. E WI looking for victory on final day
