The owner and licensee is Michelle Riley, a landlady of considerable experience, having run the Tandle Hill Tavern in Middleton, when it was awarded Manchester Evening News Pub of the Year, as well as winning CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year on more than one occasion. After a spell at the White Lion in Delph, Michelle worked for some years as shift supervisor at JD Wetherspoons Regal Moon in Rochdale and at the Shay Wake in Shaw.

More Beer caught up with Michelle to get more details. First of all the background; Michelle explained she had always wanted to own and run a free house, but the costs were prohibitive. She has been looking for suitable premises though for some time and the opportunity of Tommyfield Market came up. “It just seemed to be a great opportunity to get started and I’m extremely excited by it.” said Michelle. And what about the name? Michelle explained that before Trick or Treat, or placing pumpkins on windowsills became popular, children in the North West would knock on doors to collect money for fireworks, or materials for a bonfire. They would sing a song and neighbours would give them loose change (often to shut them up) or coal and wood for their bonfire. “It was called Cob-Coaling and the name is based on that. I feel it to be a great connection to tradition” said Michelle, “as I want to run a very traditional pub.”
