Monba had some starts and stops last spring which precluded an early-season debut, but the grey colt finally made his first start during the Keeneland fall meeting and made an immediate impression. Pegged at a morning-line quote of 5-1, Monba was let go at odds nearly double that with Rene Douglas in the saddle. Never far from the front while wide on the track in the seven-furlong maiden Oct. 17, he made an eyecatching move at the quarter pole, took command in upper stretch and drew off by 4 1/4 lengths, while galloping out well past his rivals, becoming a J “TDN Rising Star” J (video). His next race at Churchill Downs Nov. 24 was nearly as impressive. Drawn in the 11 hole that day, Monba was in close attendance to a good pace while four and five wide down the backside, opened a daylight advantage at the eighth pole and was able to hold on by a neck. For his final two-year-old appearance, Monba found himself in against the likes of Into Mischief, Colonel John and Massive Drama in the Dec. 22 GI CashCall Futurity. Settled in 10th for the opening six panels, the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad came running late for fourth, beaten 2 1/4 lengths. Monba had just one start to his credit this season, a disappointing 12th as the favorite in the GII Fountain of Youth S., a race in which he was stepped on from behind going into the clubhouse turn. Trainer Todd Pletcher had originally penciled in his charge for the GII Coolmore Lexington S. a week down the line, but a half-mile breeze in :47 1/5 encouraged the conditioner Pyro “Never Fires”... to shoot for the stars here.
