Jazz and disability Django Reinhardt, New York City 1946. Photography by William P. Gottlieb, from the William P. Gottlieb Collection, Library of Congress. Classification no. LC-GLB23-0730. Public Domain 1 Jazz and disability George McKay [pre-publication final draft of chapter in Nicholas Gebhardt, Nicole Rustin-Paschal Tony Whyton, eds. 2019. The Routledge Companion to Jazz Studies. London: Routledge, pp. 173-184] What is jazz? Is it art, a disease, a manner, or a dance? Bandleader Paul Whiteman, New York Times, 1927 (quoted in Watts et al 2008, 184) Art or disease? This chapter both draws on and seeks to extend recent interdisciplinary scholarship in music and disability studies (DS) by looking at the case of jazz. Consider here a definition of the musical instruction alla zoppa, which is usually employed in western classical music to signal a physically impaired character: zoppa in Italian is ‘lame’, ‘limping’, and so it has been applied to music. But it can also mean ‘syncopated’— and so the rhythmic feature at the heart of much jazz has a musical connection with a physical disability, a disability which is about moving differently. A small body of work has been exploring the relation between jazz and disability (Stras 2008 and 2009, Johnson 2011, Lubet 2011 and 2013, Rowden 2009, Pearl 2009); the approach has tended to be around a particular artist (Stras on Connie Boswell, Lubet on Oscar Peterson), or a specific period (Johnson and Stras on early jazz and dance music in the 1920s), or a particular disability (Rowden on visual impairment, Pearl on neurological issues).

"TAKE YOUR IMPROVISATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL" • 10 SIMPLE TIPS • www.jeffcoffin.com • [email protected] 1. Where am I right now? Be honest with yourself, covering the basics. strengths & weaknesses. 2. Where do I want to be in the future? Timetables/Goals... 3. How do I get there? Developing lifelong practice habits. 4. Tradition...imitation vs. individuality. (“Follow the line, not the style.”) 5. Transcriptions and how to approach them. 6. Actively listening to music. How to do it. (see listening sheet) 7. Having your instrument be the piano/bass/drums and more!!! 8. Don't limit yourself to one style of playing or listening. 9. Using unusual expressive devices: multi-phonics, growling, alt. articulations, slap tongue etc. 10. Limitless Wonder. ("Can I really do that?") …THE GREATEST GIFT ANY TEACHER CAN GIVE YOU IS THE GIFT OF HOW TO TEACH YOURSELF… REMEMBER... You will not improve overnight in the way you wish you could. You will however have sudden bursts of inspiration along the way which will change the way you play. It is my belief that you must experience life to be able to express it. Being a better person will help you become a better musician. By examining and working hard on these ideas and concepts, you will become a better improvising musician. Keep working and striving toward something and through repetition comes magic. “You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true, you may have to work for it however.” – Richard Bach/Illusions a great resource: Jamey Aebersold • Play-a-Long CD’s www.jameyaebersold.com More jazz related books than you could ever use! The African-Americans; jazz; movement aimed to stop the erasure of “black creative genius” television; memory; counterculture; politics not only from the nation’s television airwaves, but from its collective history and memory – to make that which was practically invisible visible once again. But Rahsaan Roland Kirk and the Jazz and People’s Movement do not fit neatly into the usual categories historians use to describe the politics of the “long Sixties.” Kirk occupied a hybrid position – equal parts radical, reformist, and countercultural – and fashioned himself as what scholars such as Elizabeth Jelin and Lorena Oropeza have called “memory entrepreneurs”- men and women who give voice to those disappeared or otherwise silenced by the state.

Based on a longtime love of jazz, I originally intended to write my paper on the comparative racial dimensions of East and West Coast jazz. With this in mind, I picked up Charley Gerard’s book, Jazz in Black and White (Greenwood Press, 1998), to do some background reading. It was in this book that I first read about the Jazz and People’s Movement (JPM), Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s activist group from 1970-1. Almost immediately, I decided to switch my topic and focus on the JPM. My initial research centered on periodical coverage of the movement, which I gathered at Boston University’s Mugar Library and the Boston Public Library.
