Felixer™ Grooming Trap Non-Target Safety Trial: Numbats July 2020 Brian Chambers, Judy Dunlop, Adrian Wayne Summary Felixer™ cat grooming traps are a novel and potential useful means for controlling feral cats that have proven difficult, or very expensive to control by other methods such as baiting, shooting and trapping. The South West Catchments Council (SWCC) and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) plan to undertake a meso-scale trial of Felixer™ traps in the southern jarrah forest where numbats (Myrmecobius fasciatus) are present. Felixer™ traps have not previously been deployed in areas with numbat populations. We tested the ability of Felixer™ traps to identify numbats as a non-target species by setting the traps in camera only mode in pens with four numbats at Perth Zoo. The Felixer™ traps were triggered 793 times by numbats with all detections classified as non-targets. We conclude that the Felixer™ trap presents no risk to numbats as a non-target species. Longbottom1 1 Indo-Pacifc Environmental, PO Box 191, Duncraig East, Western Australia 6023, Australia. * Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT – Until recently rivers of the Pilbara region of north Western Australia were considered to be free of introduced fsh species. However, a survey of aquatic fauna of the Fortescue River conducted in March 2017 resulted in the capture of 19 Poecilia latipinna (Sailfn Molly) throughout a 25 km section of the upper catchment. This represented the frst record of an alien fsh species in the Pilbara region and the most northern record in Western Australia. Based on the size of the individuals captured, the distribution over which they were recorded and the fact that the largest female was mature, P. latipinna appeared to be breeding. While P. latipinna was unlikely to physically threaten native fsh species in the upper reaches of the Fortescue River, potential spatial and dietary competition may exist if it reaches downstream waters where native fsh diversity is higher and dietary overlap is likely. As P. latipinna has the potential to affect macroinvertebrate communities, some risk may also exist to the macroinvertebrate community of the Fortescue Marsh, which is located immediately downstream, and which is valued for its numerous short range endemic aquatic invertebrates. The current fnding indicated that despite the relative isolation of the river and presence of a low human population, this remoteness does not mean the river is safe from the potential impact of species introductions. -

Melissa Taylor iii Abstract Hearing is an important factor allowing species to obtain information about their environment. Variation in tympanic bullae and external pinnae morphology has been linked with hearing sensitivity and sound localisation in different mammals. Bandicoots and bilbies (Order Peramelemorphia) typically occupy omnivorous niches across a range of habitats from open, arid deserts to dense, tropical forests in Australia and New Guinea. The morphology of tympanic bullae and pinnae varies between peramelemorphian taxa. Little is known about the relationship between these structures, or the extent to which they vary with respect to aspects of ecology, environment or behaviour. This thesis investigated the relationship between tympanic bulla and pinna size in 29 species of bandicoot and bilby. Measurements were taken from museum specimens to investigate this relationship using direct measuring methods and linear dimensions. It was hypothesised that an inverse relationship between bullae and pinnae may exist and that species residing in arid regions would have more extreme differences. Environmental variables were examined to determine the level of influence they had on bullae and pinnae. This study found that there was a phylogenetic correlation between the structures and that they were significantly influenced by temperature (max/average) and precipitation (average). -

It is found from south-eastern Queensland all the way to the northern parts of the Western Australian coast. Populations have declined across much of this range, particularly as a result of the spread of the cane toad. Biodiversity “Biodiversity”, or biological diversity, refers to variety in all forms of life—all plants and animals, their genes, and the ecosystems they live in. [b] It is important because all living things are connected with each other. For example, humans depend on living things in the environment for clean air to breathe, food to eat, and clean water to drink. Biodiversity is one of the underlying themes in The Hunter, a Tasmanian film directed by David Nettheim in 2011 and based on Julia Leigh’s 1999 novel about the hunt for the last Tasmanian Tiger. The film and the novel showcase problems that arise from loss of species, loss of habitat, and contested ideas about land use. The story is set in the Central Plateau Conservation Area and much of the film is shot just south of that area near Derwent Bridge and in the Florentine Valley. In Tasmania, land clearing is widely considered to be the biggest threat to biodiversity [c, d]. -

case study 21: the geographe bay region 2 Australia’s National Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities case study 21: the geographe bay region executive summary The Geographe Bay region, like many other Western Australian coastal areas, is facing the stress of excess nutrient loading to the coastal waterways and the adjacent marine ecosystem. Also like several other regions, the symptoms of this are the highly damaging toxic algal blooms that occur frequently in the fresh and estuarine waters of the region, and the major impacts for agriculture, tourism, public health and biodiversity. These issues were first recognised in the Geographe Bay region in the 1990s, and a community-led process was initiated to develop and implement an integrated catchment management plan designed to reduce nutrient inputs and restore environmental values to their former levels. The catchment management plan is now implemented by Geographe Catchment Council (GeoCatch), a small community-based organisation established for this purpose. The catchment management plan is a voluntary instrument designed to re-orient rural and urban management practices towards more desirable objectives through education and awareness raising, through demonstrated examples of best practice, and through promotion of specific measures for adoption by local and state government agencies. A large number of important strategies have been developed and implemented, and new strategies are being developed. However, although the catchment management plan provides for monitoring and evaluation to be conducted, there appear to be very few examples that demonstrate the success of the plan in facilitating improved catchment health (such as by reducing nutrient loading to rivers or the bay). -

White-bellied and Orange-bellied Frogs Geocrinia species Conservation Status: Critically Endangered and Vulnerable Identification The white-bellied frog Geocrinia alba and orange-bellied frog Geocrinia vitellina are two small species of frogs that are endemic to Western Australia and are both restricted to small areas in the lower southwest. There are also two other Geocrinia species found in the similar habitats in the southwest. The white-bellied frog has a light brown to grey back with two parallel rows of darker brown wart-like spots along the body. The belly is white, with or without a very faint yellow wash. Toes are short and unwebbed. The males make a mating call that is a series of 11-18 rapid pulses repeated irregularly. White-bellied frog.
