An Insect Community Study of the Morris Arboretum Green Roof Abstract Green roofs are becoming increasingly popular in cities around the globe because of their numerous benefits to humans. Green roofs can also benefit wildlife, particularly insects, through the creation of habitat. The og al of this study was to evaluate the biodiversity of the insect community on the Morris Arboretum intensive green roof and to identify management strategies to promote more diversity. We vacuum sampled the green roof three times in August and September 2017. Insects in the orders Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera, and Mantodea were sorted, preserved, and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic rank. Overall, 891 insects were collected and identified. Two groups, ants and aphids, accounted for 566 of those insects. There was low diversity and abundance of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, which could be attributed to the lack of fall-flowering plants, larval host plants, and overwintering sites.

Factors affecting egg deposition of the European mantis. Folia Biologica (Kraków) 68: 45-49. In this paper, we studied the egg-case (oothecae) deposition of the European mantis, Mantis religiosa (Linnaeus 1758), a predatory insect. We hypothesized that the height of ootheca deposition on a plant reflects the insolation requirements of the species, and would increase when plant cover is denser. We found that the taller the plants nearby, the greater the height of egg deposition. Oothecae were also oviposited higher in denser vegetation. The observed behavior may ensure the proper insolation of developing offspring. To our knowledge, this is the first description of an egg laying strategy of this species under natural conditions. This finding allows for a better understanding of habitat selection and the overall ecology of the European mantis. It may be also useful in identifying the mechanisms of the range extension of this species and is a potential tool to effectively conserve xerothermic ootheca-laying animals. Further studies are required to assess the flexibility of this behavior under different environmental conditions. (MANTODEA: MANTIDAE) A NEW HOST FOR PODAGRION PACHYMERUM WALKER (HYMENOPTERA: TORYMIDAE) IN TURKEY SUMMARY The present survey was carried out in Şanlıurfa province in rice fields during 2013-2014 on Xanthium strumarium L. and Cyperus glomeratus L. infested with the oothecea of European mantid Mantis religiosa L. (Mantodea: Mantidae). Torymid parasitoid, Podagrion pachymerum (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) was obtained from M. religiosa oothecea collected from X. strumarium and C. glomeratus species in Şanlıurfa province. M. religiosa is a new host record for P. pachymerum inTurkey. In addition, P. pachymerum is a new record for the insect fauna of Turkey. Keywords: Mantis religiosa, Podagrion pachymerum, new host, new record, Turkey INTRODUCTION Mantis religiosa with the common name praying mantis or the European mantis belongs to order Mantodea, family Mantidae. It is one of the most well- known and widespread species within this family and genus Mantis. The European mantis is usually 5–7.5 cm in length and has shades of bright green to tan. It can be distinguished easily by a black-ringed spot beneath the fore coxae (Anonymous, 2014a). Friday 18th October – Thursday 24th October Report by Beth Aucott www.ingloriousbustards.com Friday 18th October After an early start we arrived at Malaga airport about midday where we met Niki and the first member of our group Margaret. After introductions, the four of us set off in one of the vehicles whilst Simon met the rest of the group and it wasn’t long before we were travelling in convoy on our way to our first base, Huerta Grande - a beautiful eco-lodge snuggled into cork-oak woodland. Over a light lunch, and a glass of wine, we met the rest of the group, Alexia, Glenn, Carla, Chris and Colin as we watched Crested Tits come into the feeders. It felt bizarre to be watching these funky little birds in shorts and t-shirt when then the only time I’d seen them before had been in the snow in Scotland! We had time to settle in and have a quick wander around the grounds. Our list started to grow with sightings of Nuthatch, Short-toed Treecreeper, Long-legged Buzzard, Booted Eagle, Sand Martin, House Martin, Barn and Red-rumped Swallow. Fleeting views of Two-tailed Pasha and Geranium Bronze also went down well as welcome additions to the butterfly list. We then headed out to Punta Carnero and spent some time at a little viewpoint on the coast. From here we watched a couple of Ospreys fishing as we looked across the straits to Africa. Red-rumped Swallows and Crag Martins whizzed overhead, sharing the sky with Hobby, Sparrowhawk and Peregrine.
