egin your Garden Tour with a visit to the Children’s Garden near the registration Btent. This garden combines play features with almost 9,000 native plants for an outdoor experience that’s both fun and educational for people of all ages. Opened in late summer 2016, the garden has proven to be one of the most popular areas of the Park and is a cornerstone of the ongoing Fort Williams Park Foundation’s Arboretum project.

Garden features include paths leading to a variety of opportunities for creative play, a diverse woodland that attracts numerous bird species, a meadow-inspired area with wildflowers and pollinating insects, a small biofilter pond that supports a variety of aquatic plants and wildlife, and a cascading waterfall that feeds into a large skating pond below. Children delight in the many play structures, including a tree lookout fort, a footbridge that crosses a shallow creek, a gopher tunnel, and a slide made of smooth granite.

Shrubs in bloom during the tour include elderberry, swamp azalea, meadowsweet, and button bush accentuated by a burst of color from perennials including yarrow, Bowman’s root, mountain mint, bluebell, Foxglove beardtongue, pale purple coneflower, blazing star, ox-eye sunflower, and much more. Trees including sassafras, tulip poplar, American hornbeam, and Atlantic white cedar provide both shade and visual appeal.

To help prevent erosion, some of the slopes have been planted with colonizing plants such as sweet-fern, staghorn sumac, fragrant sumac, bayberry, sheep laurel, barren strawberry, white wood aster, New England aster, and switch grass. Berry-producing shrubs attract a variety of wildlife and include lowbush and highbush blueberry, red twig dogwood, red and black chokeberry, nannyberry, and ‘Grey Owl’ eastern red cedar.

he quaint and picturesque design makes this garden both functional and beautiful, Tutilizing every available space without giving the appearance of overcrowding.

When Patricia Wheeler moved to this spot from a larger property in 2014, she chose to leave intact the front foundation plantings, which include old-fashioned favorites such as forsythia, azalea and rhododendron. In the backyard, the challenge was to transform the small but sunny area into an urban food garden. She has some experience in this area, as she has worked with The Resilience Hub in Portland, designing garden beds using permaculture principles to produce as much organically grown food as space allows and planting natives in other areas.

Lauren Lehman of Fiddlehead Garden Designs provided consultation about the overall design and planning for the eventual lawn-free property. After a small addition was built in 2016, the area where an above-ground pool had been was excavated and Wheeler added raised beds, a stone patio, and fruiting shrubs and trees such as highbush blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, peach, and pear.

The garden receives continuous upgrades. Last year, a friend built a wooden arbor that supports climbing plants; this year, Wheeler planned a pergola over the patio to provide shade from the hot summer sun. The backyard is enclosed within a tightly bound picket fence, which provides privacy while giving an old-fashioned flavor to the garden. A pair of Adirondack chairs near the raised beds provide an opportunity to relax and watch the variety of pollinators as they peruse the plantings.

Here is a backyard garden that produces both decorative and edible plants within a functional yet cozy enclosure—in all, a great combination for spending a day outdoors.

aren Brown’s property at 45 Ocean View has changed many times since her Kfamily moved into their home in 1979. It evolved as the family did: Kiddie pools, swing sets and sandboxes have given way to many species of plants and flowers. Once there was a clothesline and a vegetable garden; now there are elegant pergolas added after trips to England and Scotland, where Kate and her husband fell in love with their shape and uses. There was once a wood pile stocked for winter; now there are three trees—each planted in celebration of grandchildren born over the past 15 years.

All grassy areas have been replaced by gardens of various sizes and shapes. Three decks in the backyard offer sun or shade at different times of the day and offer a quiet retreat at all times of the day. Stone paver pathways crisscross the backyard for ease of garden gazing and continue out front to welcome friends into the yard.

Little by little, project by project, the Browns worked on their landscape as time allowed. This meant that it took much longer than had they hired someone to do it for them, but it also gives it a very personal touch. And, as Karen says, “we enjoyed seeing the end result at the conclusion of each project.”

The Browns didn’t plan their garden with any particular theme in mind. There was no grand design, no master plan. While there are many plants, shrubs, and flowers, they did not purchase them for any other reason than they liked them. They don’t even know the names of most of them, and only recently began inserting identification tags alongside them. However, Karen says, “those are often displaced by the wildlife that calls the yard home.”

f you would have seen Kate Kuhrt’s property in 2012, you might never have imagined it as Ia contender for the Cape Elizabeth Garden Tour. And you would have been justified. The front yard was infested with Japanese beetle grubs, which ate the roots of the grass. The grubs themselves provided tasty snacks for skunks and crows. The results were a lawn that, in Kate’s words, “looked like a potato field.”

Rather than plant new sod to repair the damage, the Kuhrts decided to turn the front yard into a garden. They not only wanted something that would be visually appealing, but that would provide a welcoming habitat for butterflies and birds while exemplifying environmentally friendly practices. Enter landscape designer Dave Homa, whose use of permaculture had impressed the Kuhrts.

As you begin your tour of this garden, you’ll see the results immediately in the front yard, where the “potato field” is now lush with plants such as lavender, catnip, coneflowers, and a peach tree. The oak trees on either side of the driveway are embellished with herbs and strawberries. Daughters of the original plants now dot the Kuhrts’ neighborhood as well as the Children’ Garden in Fort Williams Park. Kate loves to share plants from her garden with others and has been repaid in kind.

More delights await tour goers in the backyard. Working off a spiral design of Kate’s that reminded her of a fiddlehead, Homa designed a landscape that incorporates plants from the front yard with several fruit trees, including cherry, crabapple for the birds, and Asian pear.

Every year, the Kuhrts add something new to their garden: a berries mound in the front, coneflower and black-eyed Susans to attract finches, milkweed to attract Monarch butterflies—and more. It all ties into Kate’s love of nature, nurture and neighbor.

ou’ll marvel at the views, both historical and natural, from this Shingle-style home Yof Julian and Maryellen Coles. Indeed, they have endeavored to maintain simplicity in both the house and the gardens while capturing spectacular tableaus.

Start your tour with the gardens at the front of the house. Flowers have been planted to bloom at various times during the season, so there is always a burst of color. Lavender lines the path to the front porch. Classic cottage garden plantings include allium, iris, hosta, dianthus, salvia, yarrow, potentilla, coreopsis, daisy, hydrangea, purple coneflower, Russian sage, phlox and sedum.

The property contains several rock walls bordered with yellow and orange daylilies. In front, a majestic red oak tree that shades an historic cemetery dating to the 1800s anchors one wall; this tree is lighted during the holiday season.

Continue your tour by wandering down the natural path leading to a blue stone patio and a fire pit. From here you will be able to see the marsh of the Spurwink Division of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and get a peek at Spurwink Church, erected in 1802. Continue down the path to a pond and take a moment to appreciate the abundance of wildlife that calls this place home.

hen Sharon and Edward Riley purchased this property in 2012, Wit was overgrown with trees and plantings that hadn’t been maintained in years, and rot was beginning to set in. It was, to use Edward’s words, “a true jungle-like atmosphere.” So they started over. From scratch. Neither Sharon or Edward are experienced gardeners or landscape designers, but what they have accomplished virtually all on their own in just six years is astounding. The Rileys’ design allows outdoor seating and entertainment to follow the sun or shade throughout the day, maximizing the enjoyment of the outdoors during the growing season. Begin your tour of this garden by walking up the driveway and straight back across the lawn toward the woods. Here you will enjoy the backyard’s northern exposure, accentuated by a water feature and a fire pit. For this side of the house, the Rileys cut back the overgrowth to expose outcroppings of ledge, and planted greenery and flowers that would bloom at different times of the season. More than two dozen varieties of plants adorn the backyard, including climbing hydrangea, common juniper, astilbe, ‘Purple Dragon’ spotted dead nettles, ‘Star Gazer’ lily, ‘Buzzy Lizzy’ impatiens, and marsh marigold. For the southern exposure, the Rileys have taken advantage of the privacy afforded by the property’s high street elevation by building two patios. Nick Tammaro of Tammaro Landscaping in Cape Elizabeth provided the hardscape elements in this area and the plantings around the hot tub. New plantings in this area include privet, ‘Green Mountain’ boxwood, peonies, lamb’s ear, pink double ‘Knockout’ rose, ‘Star Gazer’ lily, and purple coneflower. There’s an added attraction to this stop on the Garden Tour: It’s a bird watcher’s paradise. More than 45 Eastern bluebirds have been born in the front yard’s nest box during the past four years, and they represent one of just many species that can be found here—a colorful variety for a colorful garden.

o fully appreciate this garden, one should approach it from the beach path, Tas the design’s purpose is to create an immersive experience while transitioning from the back porch through a series of naturalized areas to the beach. Aided by his wife, Josi, owner and designer Ilya Fleishman, MLA, has combined carefully laid-out grading, ledge, and plantings to transform Cape Elizabeth’s unique natural features into a new residential aesthetic for the area.

A terraced effect with an undulating bank punctuated by ledge outcroppings makes the already picturesque views of Seal Cove and Crescent Beach from the 1904 house even more stunning (legend has it that Hollywood legend Ginger Rogers once summered here). ‘Sugar Thyme’ crabapple trees have been carefully selected and placed via geometrical analysis, and serve a dual purpose of providing privacy and evoking the orchards that once grew on the site.

The abstracted theme is continued with dwarfed varieties of native and historically integrated shrubs, ground covers, and grasses such as ‘Blue Muffin’ viburnum, ‘Arctic Fire’ dogwood, and ‘Red Sprite’ winterberry, the latter of which has been laced above the ledge as it occurs in nature. Perhaps the most inviting aspect is the extensive and profuse wildflower meadow, which harmonizes the garden while transitioning it to the seaside thicket beyond.

When you approach or leave this garden, take a moment to turn your gaze upward. The terraced design creates the illusion that the house is floating above the landscape, while a forced perspective across the wildflower meadow to the woods beyond heightens the perception of depth and space—a most wondrous sight!

he garden of Mary Hodgkin and Tom Dunne was designed to provide pesticide- Tfree food and habitat for both people and wildlife. Featuring deer-resistant plants native to North America, it provides a vast variety of decorative and edible delights around every corner.

At the front of the house, you’ll be greeted by a woodland garden featuring American ginger groundcover; an herb garden sporting sage, thyme, tarragon, chives, and potted annuals; three pear trees; and an American elm tree. Groundcovers include dwarf crested iris, three-toothed cinquefoil, and white wood aster. Around the back of the house, a curved path is accentuated with common bluestar, geum, ‘Joe Pye’ weed, and asters. On the hillside above, Three Stones Landscape of Portland designed an area where large granite blocks and three Asian pear trees seem to float in a bed of wild strawberries.

In the lower yard, a pollinator meadow features an apricot tree, winterberry, switch grass, blueberries, milkweed, asters, and more. For relief from the July sun, venture into the lower woodland area, which includes a spruce grove; river, white and yellow birch; dogwood; black gum; hawthorn; and white fir; to name just a few.

Everything in this garden has been built or repurposed to present a natural Maine aesthetic. A fence made of lobster trap wire serves as a foil to woodchucks. Used wine barrels now serve as rain barrels. The garden walls, curbing, steps—even the house itself—were built with cobblestones and other granite taken from Spring Street in Portland when the street was widened in the 1970s.

Mary has a Bachelor’s degree in plant science and landscape architecture, and she developed the master plan for the property in 2003 with landscape architect Regina Leonard. Mary has since re-worked many of the original planting schemes and created new ones.

his property has an illustrious past, and physical remnants can be found while Tviewing the gardens. In the late 1880s, it served as headquarters for a fishing club; as you approach the driveway, an old chain to which their horses were tied can still be seen buried in the ledge. In the 1920s, a saltwater pool, a shuffleboard court, a pool house, a tennis court, and walking bridges were added. Although the rest has been lost to time, the shuffleboard court has been renovated and now sports modern amenities such as lighting and Wi-Fi.

The current owners have added an upper patio, a hot tub, a long terraced granite staircase, and a garden patio accented with a propane fire pit that provides warmth when enjoying the yard. As you approach the house from the driveway, you’ll pass through stone pillars and walk down a path by a white fireplace, leading to the upper patio. From here, you can get an overview of the gardens below and take in the burst of colors from the many flowers and plants, not to mention stunning panoramic ocean views.

Walk down one of two staircases to access the yard (recommended, as the terraced slope can be slippery after a recent rain), and peruse the lower lawn, which is highlighted by a large circular hillside garden. A variety of plants are showcased, including ‘Summer Snowflake’ viburnum, ‘Jim Dandy’ winterberry, ‘Dragon’s Blood’ sedum, and many more.

The wide range of plants and shrubs is testament to the garden’s purpose as a place for year-round enjoyment, as there is always something in bloom from early spring to late fall. A selection of evergreens and winterberries is mixed in with the flowers, and all plants are tolerant to salt and high winds.

The past meets the present in this garden, and the result is a beauty to behold.

he Cliff Walk Landscape is the fourth and current phase of the Fort Williams TPark Foundation’s Arboretum project. To reach the site from the Children’s Garden, walk toward the ocean and look for balloons floating above the wooden staircase on the hill across from the lighthouse. This is the south entrance to a recently completed trail that weaves through a landscape in transition, connecting a new overlook with an improved picnic look- out and a quiet sitting area under the shade of a beautiful red oak tree.

This network of trails and destination areas was created by OBP Trailworks of Turner, which followed a master plan developed by landscape architect Regina Leonard in conjunction with the Foundation. It links two previously completed Arboretum sites, Cliffside and Lighthouse View, bringing a heightened sense of exploration to the Park. The Foundation’s primary goals for the Cliff Walk Landscape project are to restore ecological health to the site by suppressing invasive plants to a level that allows healthy and vibrant native plant communities to succeed. This in turn improves habitat for birds and pollinators while providing park-goers better opportunities to witness the beauty and wonders of nature.

Some of the existing native and beneficial plants preserved through this restoration project include Northern red oak; white ash; red maple; black, pin, and choke cherry; shadbush; apple and crabapple; hawthorn; Eastern red cedar; bayberry; common wild rose; meadowsweet; staghorn sumac; and northern bush honeysuckle. As the Foundation continues to reduce invasive plants throughout the site, tipping the scale in favor of native plants, visitors will see a gradual increase in the expansion of these and additional native plants through natural succession as well as through intentional seeding and planting.

Native plants are for the birds

DO YOU LOVE BIRDS? Then add native plants to your garden and help save plants in the wild.

Birds eat seeds, berries, nectar, nuts, and bugs—a living food web that relies on declining numbers of pollinators and native plants.

So go native…and save the pollinators and the birds!
