    Placenaming on Cape Breton Island A different view from the sea: placenaming on Cape Breton Island William Davey Cape Breton University Sydney NS Canada [email protected] ABSTRACT : George Story’s paper A view from the sea: Newfoundland place-naming suggests that there are other, complementary methods of collection and analysis than those used by his colleague E. R. Seary. Story examines the wealth of material found in travel accounts and the knowledge of fishers. This paper takes a different view from the sea as it considers the development of Cape Breton placenames using cartographic evidence from several influential historic maps from 1632 to 1878. The paper’s focus is on the shift names that were first given to water and coastal features and later shifted to designate settlements. As the seasonal fishing stations became permanent settlements, these new communities retained the names originally given to water and coastal features, so, for example, Glace Bay names a town and bay. By the 1870s, shift names account for a little more than 80% of the community names recorded on the Cape Breton county maps in the Atlas of the Maritime Provinces . Other patterns of naming also reflect a view from the sea. Landmarks and boundary markers appear on early maps and are consistently repeated, and perimeter naming occurs along the seacoasts, lakes, and rivers. This view from the sea is a distinctive quality of the island’s names.     Company Town/Labour Town: Local Government in the Cape Breton Coal Towns, 1917-1926* by David FRANK** In the early years of the twentieth century the northeast coast of Cape Breton Island was a booming industrial frontier. The coal and steel in­ dustries of this district played a large part in the Canadian economy, and in Cape Breton County they created the most dynamic industrial com­ munity in the Maritime Provinces. Although the roots of industry reached back to the 1820s, unprecedented growth took place from the 1890s to the 1910s. The population of the coal district more than tripled and by 1921 included more than 40,000 people. The newly-arrived Dominion Coal and Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Companies built steel plants, opened collieries, created new settlements and expanded old ones. 1 The influence of the coal companies on the life of the coal industry was pervasive. It was often echoed in local place-names. Communities such as Dominion and Dominion No. 6 were named for the collieries of the Dominion Coal Company. In New Waterford streets were named in honour of company directors J. H. Plummer, Sir Henry Pellatt and E. R. Wood. Most importantly, the coal companies enjoyed great economic power in the mining district. As the only important employers in the coal towns, they dominated the local labour market. In Glace Bay in 1930 the Dominion Coal Company employed two-thirds of the male work force. Furthermore, as the owners of company stores and company houses, the coal companies were also powerful merchants and landlords.

  • APLA Celebrates Cape Breton Public Libraries!
    … Celebrates Cape Breton Public Libraries! Cape Breton Regional Library provides public library service throughout Cape Breton and Victoria Counties through 12 public library branches and two bookmobiles. Together they served 21,976 members and received 237,609 in-person visits in 2016-17. They circulated 371,636 items, offered 2,961 programs attended by 26,356 participants & saw 41,086 hours of public computer use. The region’s Summer Reading Club attracted 776 children who collectively read 9,828 books. “To strengthen and inspire our community by providing quality collections, cultural resources, programmes and services in a welcoming environment where all can enjoy reading and learning.” [CB Regional Library Mission Statement] Libraries are educational and cultural centres offering dynamic programs. A few highlights… Dietitian Natasha Osmond offered a very popular ‘Wellness Series’ at the New Waterford and North Sydney Libraries. An African Dance Workshop with Mufaro Chakabuda held at McConnell (Sydney), North Sydney and Glace Bay libraries offered an opportunity both to learn and participate. Drama Queens, a weekly play/script read-out-loud program at the Baddeck Library, continued to be a fun and enjoyable way to introduce and hear a wide selection of plays. The Baddeck Library Players’ fabulous production of Scrooge’s Christmas, a play by Ken Jones, raised funds to support Library programs and services, and allowed the purchase of a film license to show popular films at the library on a regular basis. Other exciting programs were made possible through partnerships with organizations such as Parks Canada, the Cape Breton Naturalists Society, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Cabot Trail Writers Festival, and Cape Breton University, as well as a host of volunteers.

    Reaching Home: Cape Breton Regional Municipality Homelessness Plan 2019 – 2024 Note: All communities receiving funding from Designated Communities stream are required to use this template in order to complete the community plan under Reaching Home. In completing this template, communities are encouraged to develop comprehensive community plans that reflect the contributions of all funding partners, including other orders of governments, not-for-profit organizations, and the for-profit sector. Please note that in communities that receive funding from both the Designated Communities and Indigenous Homelessness streams, cross-stream collaboration is expected to promote the adoption of a community-wide planning process and support the achievement of community-level outcomes reflecting the needs of the whole community. To support communities in completing their community plans, a Reference Guide has been developed. It is recommended that this be reviewed prior to completing your community’s homelessness plan to ensure understanding of the requirements and completeness. The Community Plan for Reaching Home must be approved by the Community Advisory Board (CAB) of the Designated Community before it is submitted to Service Canada. If your community is developing a joint plan with the Indigenous Community Entity, both Community Advisory Boards must approve the community plan.     Recipient: Mayor Cecil Clarke and CBRM City Council Letter: Greetings, In the past 5 years the HAT has put on hundreds of shows and has revitalized the downtown core. It has mentorship programs for young actors and adults alike. It has become a second family for the children and parents alike of hundreds of families across the CBRM. CBRM council voted to put the CBRM's new firestation across the street from the Highland Arts Theatre, with absolutely NO consultation with the public, no transparency whatsoever. Those of you who have been to a live theatre performance understand just how damaging to the entire experience having a constant barrage of loud firetruck sirens and horns, or even one such interruption at precisely the wrong moment in a show, can be. We have spoken to City Council and they are adamant about not revisiting and changing that decision despite the very real danger of it putting the HAT out of business. They need to be made to understand that they are endangering the future of the youth of this community for whom the HAT has become a vital resource to help them develop theatrical and crucial life skills, and that the people of the CBRM will not stand for this! Council needs to find a better location for the firestation that does NOT put live theatre at risk.
