How the British divided Punjab into Hindu and Sikh By Sanjeev Nayyar December 2016 This is chapter 2 from the E book on Khalistan Movement published by www.swarajyamag.com During a 2012 visit to Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh, about an hour's drive from Anandpur Sahib, I wondered why so many Sikhs come to the temple for darshan. The answer lies in the events of 1699. In the Chandi Charitra, the tenth Guru says that in the past god had deputed Goddess Durga to destroy evil doers. That duty was now assigned to him hence he wanted her blessings. So he invited Pandit Kesho from Kashi to conduct the ceremony at the hill of Naina Devi. The ceremony started on Durga Ashtami day, in the autumn of October 1698, and lasted for six months. At the end of this period, the sacred spring Navratras began on 21 March 1699. Then, “When all the ghee and incense had been burnt and the goddess had yet not appeared, the Guru came forward with a naked sword and, flashing it before the assembly declared: ‘This is the goddess of power!” This took place on 28 March 1699, the Durga Ashtami day. The congregation was then asked to move to Anandpur, where on New Year Day of 1st Baisakh, 1699, the Guru would create a new nation.” 3 On 30 March 1699, at Anandpur, Govind Singhji gave a stirring speech to the assembly about the need to protect their spiritual and temporal rights. He then asked if anyone would offer his head in the services of God, Truth and Religion.

  • Sources for the Study of Gurū Gobind Singh's Life and Times
G.S. Mann: Sources for Study 229 Sources for the Study of Guru Gobind Singh's Life and Times Gurinder Singh Mann University of California, Santa Barbara ___________________________________________________________ This essay surveys the sites, artifacts, and literary texts associated with Guru Gobind Singh's period (1675-1708). In the process, it introduces a set of sources of information as well as attempts at reorientation of the context that produced them. In a brief conclusion, the essay highlights the need for expanding and revising the current understanding of the Guru's life. ___________________________________________________________ The present day understanding of Guru Gobind Singh's life is constructed around three landmarks: his birth in Patna in eastern India, in 1666; his creation of the Khalsa ("Community of the Pure") at Anandpur, in the Punjab hills, in 1699; and his replacement of the office of the personal Guru with the Granth, the Sikh scripture, thereby elevating it to the position of the Guru Granth ("Book manifested as the Guru") at the time of his death, in Nanderh in south India, in 1708.1 The details that fill in the forty-two years of the Guru's life are culled from a variety of texts, which begin with the Dasam Granth ("the tenth book" or "book of the tenth [Guru]"), an anthology of poetry created largely between 1685 to 1698, and Sri Gur Sobha ("Praise of the Guru"), a poetic history of the period presently dated in 1711, and include eighteenth and nineteenth century writings culminating in Giani Gian Singh's synthetic narrative, Tvarikh Guru Khalsa ("History of the Guru Community"), completed in 1891.2 (For a brief review of this chronology of events see Appendix).

  • Examining Pre-Colonial Identities in Mahesh Dattani's Dance Like A
ariel: a review of international english literature ISSN 0004-1327 Vol. 42 No. 2 Pages 129–147 Copyright © 2012 Looking Back, Looking Forward: Examining Pre-Colonial Identities in Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man Asha Sen Since the publication of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children in 1980, more and more postcolonial novels from India have been receiving ac- claim at home and abroad. Perhaps the fact that the postcolonial novel is itself derived from its European predecessor helps explain its popu- larity among Western and middle-class Indian audiences who would have been familiar with the genre prior to encountering it in its post- colonial form.1 Indian publishing houses like Penguin India, which was established in the mid-eighties and is today the largest English-language trade publisher in the subcontinent and the first to publish Anglophone novelists like Shashi Deshpande and Anita Nair, also help promote the Anglophone Indian novel within the country. However, while the grow- ing popularity of the postcolonial Indian novel is to be applauded, I believe that it is also important to pay close critical attention to more performance-based Anglophone cultural productions, like theater, for instance, that are only just beginning to receive attention in India and overseas. With this in mind, this article examines the recent popularity of play- wright Mahesh Dattani (1958–), who became the first English-language dramatist to be awarded the Sahitya Academi award by the Indian gov- ernment in 1998 for his book of plays Final Solutions and

  • Worshipping of Goddesses in Kangra Hills: a Case Study of Vajreshvari Temple
Pramana Research Journal ISSN NO: 2249-2976 Worshipping of Goddesses in Kangra Hills: A Case Study of Vajreshvari Temple SUNIL CHAUHAN Punjab University Kangra is one of the largest districts of the Himachal Pradesh. In ancient Indian traditions, the term Kangra is depicted as Trigart which means “the land of the three rivers”. Goddesses are one of the popular deities worshipped in the hills. Many legends connected with the origin of the goddess in hills still exist. The cult of the goddesses associated in its beginnings with original faith, and deep-rooted in antiquity, had early become absorbed in the Hindu pantheon. The revelations of the goddess prevailing in the Kangra acquired an outstanding place in the history of oral traditions of hills. Most of the goddess cults were recruits from semi-brahaminical and aboriginal circles. Devi is a popular object of veneration all over the province, her worship being in vogue in most of the places in diversified forms in Kangra. The renowned shrine of Vajreswari Devi is of a great relic, is located in the old town, popularly known as Bhawan. This temple is regarded as the one of the fifty-one shaktipithas in India. Many pilgrims from far places come to pay homage to Devi which made this shrine more popular. Role of temple administration in matters of temple affairs is very important. By interviewing temple priest and Temple Management Committee efforts were made to trace the history of temple and rituals performed with its significance. Volume 9, Issue 11, 2019 187 https://pramanaresearch.org Pramana Research Journal ISSN NO: 2249-2976 The concept of the goddess as it appeared had a threefold characteristic: the ordinary form, under her numerous names as Uma and Bhavani; the ferocious form under her names like Kali and Chandi; and the sensual form under her names like Shayama and Kumari.i The goddess too became Shakti, the supreme power taking female form.
