Media Coverage Report | March 15 – August 15, 2020 Media Coverage Report | March 15 – August 15, 2020 OVERVIEW The COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic created many challenges for our local community of faith in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. For the first time in the history of the Archdiocese, parishes and schools closed to the public. The situation developed quickly, but also created a unique evangelization opportunity due to heightened media interest on the steps taken by the Archdiocese to address the crisis. The heightened press interested has created opportunities to reach the faithful directly to provide comfort and solace at a time of social distancing. Through Angelus News, digital media and the secular and Catholic press, the Archdiocese developed a comprehensive communications approach that reiterated the message that while the doors of churches were closed, the church continued to walk with its people. Positive stories and digital content featuring the work of parishes, schools, religious education, cemeteries and other ministries effectively reached the faithful and the general public through the press and through the @lacatholics and @angelusnews social channels. It also provided the opportunity to amplify the Archdiocese’s social outreach of content on @lacatholics and @angelusnews through the press to those who were not already following or engaged directly with the Archdiocese or lacked digital access. Articles and social content were shared via press releases to media outlets who integrated them into their stories or shared on their social channels. With public Masses suspended to limit the impact of the contagion in our communities, it was even more important to utilize livestreaming to allow the faithful to participate in the celebration of Holy Mass safely from home. While the Cathedral and other parishes had already been streaming Sunday Masses, daily Mass also began to be streamed. In addition, Catholic media partners, El Sembrador (ESNE) TV and Radio, Guadalupe Radio, Relevant Radio and The Catholic Channel on SiriusXM, also aired the Masses from the Cathedral and provided additional offerings for Masses. Due to the limitations on access to internet, paid cable and streaming services by some in our communities, there was a great need to be able to provide daily and Sunday Mass on TV especially in English. The Archdiocese’s longstanding relationship with Univision Los Angeles facilitated for an immediate partnership to broadcast daily and Sunday Masses in Spanish from the Cathedral that began airing on March 19, 2020 free of cost to the Archdiocese and to the faithful. The challenge arose with finding a secular broadcaster to provide the English Mass on television free of charge. According to Msgr. Francis Weber, the last time the Mass had been broadcast by the Archdiocese on secular media on a continual basis was in the 1950s on radio, but not on television. The Communications Department negotiated an initial agreement with Fox-11 Los Angeles to air the English Easter Sunday Mass on their affiliate station KCOP Channel 13, which then resulted in the station offering at first to air two additional Sunday Masses through the end of April, and then a final partnership was established to have Sunday Mass in English from the Cathedral broadcasted on KCOP Channel 13 through June 21. ABC7 began airing Sunday Mass in English from the Cathedral on July 19 on its digital channel 7.2, Localish Network, and via cable on Spectrum 1246 or 703, Frontier 467, COX Cable 1133 and Mediacom 520. Along with Univision Los Angeles, Fox 11 Los Angeles and ABC 7, CBSN Los Angeles aired the Masses on their digital channels and online as well. The airing of the Catholic Mass on secular television is a historic recognition of the Catholic community in Southern California. FOX 11 Los Angeles reported that normally Sunday programing on KCOP did not show any points in the TV ratings. On this Easter Sunday, that same timeslot showed almost a one-point increase which indicated an unprecedented amount of viewership for that timeslot on the station. A representative for the station also mentioned that it was unprecedented for the station to provided time on air at no cost, much less for an hour and on a continual basis. The number of engagements on social media through @lacatholics, @angelusnews and @oalacathedral have also soared during this time - with engagement at an all-time high, even with the limitations faced due to changing algorithms that have been affecting reach overall for all users. The following report shows the tremendous interest and engagement from secular and Catholic media along with a strengthening and growth of organic and real-time engagement through ADLA social channels and Angelus News. MEDIA COVERAGE SUMMARY We have garnered more than 4,891 mentions and 9 billion in estimated audience (viewers, readers, listeners, visitors) with an estimated advertising value of $83 million by highlighting the efforts of the Archdiocese to continue to serve and walk with the faithful during the pandemic. • On the Touch-Event Theopolitical Encounters
ON THE TOUCH-EVENT Theopolitical Encounters Valentina Napolitano Abstract: This article addresses the ‘touch-event’ as a mediated affective encounter that pivots around a tension between intimacy and distance, seduction and sovereignty, investment and withdrawal. Through a reread- ing of the Pauline event of conversion to Christianity, it argues that an analysis of the evolving significance of touch-events for Catholic liturgy and a religious congregation shows the theopolitical as always already constituted within an economy of enfleshed virtues. Focusing on contem- porary examples of touch-events from the life of Francis, the first pope from the Americas, as well as from fieldwork among a group of female Latin American Catholic migrants in Rome, I argue for a closer examina- tion of touch-events in order to grasp some of their theopolitical, radical, emancipatory, and, in some contexts, subjugating effects. Keywords: Atlantic Return, economies of virtues, incarnation, Pauline event, Pope Francis, sovereignty, theopolitics, touch-event If one googles the word ‘touch-event’, what comes up is a definition of a keyword in the Java programming language—TouchEvent—that governs the interface between a given piece of software and a user’s contact with a piece of touch-sensitive hardware (e.g., a touchscreen or touchpad).1 Although this use of the term is distinct in obvious ways from my own theorization of touch- event in what follows, the Java keyword ‘TouchEvent’ nevertheless names an infrastructural modality that is at once a tactile, digital encounter (a move- ment) and a condition for its apprehension (a code). Anthropologists and histo- rians have written at some length about touch—chief touch, royal touch, papal touch, ritual and healing touch—and the connection between the king’s two bodies in medieval and early modern concepts of sovereignty (Firth 1940; Grae- ber and Sahlins 2017; Kantorowicz [1957] 1997).

  • Religion and Fake News: Faith-Based Alternative Information Ecosystems in the U.S. and Europe
Religion and Fake News: Faith-based Alternative Information Ecosystems in the U.S. and Europe Christopher Douglas | 6 January 2018 Summary he intersection of fake news and religion is marked by three asymmetries. First, fake news circulates more among Americans than Europeans. Second, fake news circulates T among conservatives more than liberals. Third, fake news for conservatives often feature religious themes. The origin of the fake news information-entertainment ecosystem lies largely in Christian fundamentalism’s cultivation of counter-expertise. The intersection of fake news and religion today is being exploited by Russia to subvert Western democracies and deepen social divisions. Western countries need to strengthen mainstream evidence-based journalism, incorporate conservative religious leaders into mainstream discussions, and detach high religiosity from fake news information ecosystems. Page 1 About the Report This report was commissioned by the Cambridge Institute on Religion & International Studies (CIRIS) on behalf of the Transatlantic Policy Network on Religion and Diplomacy (TPNRD). About the TPNRD The TPNRD is a forum of diplomats from North America and Europe who collaborate on religion-related foreign policy issues. Launched in 2015, the network is co-chaired by officials from the European External Action Service and the U.S. Department of State. About CIRIS CIRIS is a multi-disciplinary research centre at Clare College, Cambridge. CIRIS’s role as the Secretariat of the TPNRD is generously supported by the Henry Luce Foundation’s initiative on religion in international affairs. CATHOLICPAC: WHY THE UNITED STATES CATHOLIC CONFERENCE OF BISHOPS SHOULD (PROBABLY) LOSE ITS 501(C)(3) TAX-EXEMPT STATUS Jesse Ryan Loffler* “A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who takes a position in favor of an intrinsic evil, such as abortion or racism, if the voter’s intent is to support that position. In such cases a Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in grave evil.”1 INTRODUCTION During the 2008 election, now-Vice-President Biden was ad- monished not to take Communion by Denver Archbishop Chaput on account of Biden’s pro-choice position.2 Early in 2009, Arch- bishop Raymond Burke—now the head of the Vatican’s highest court, the Apostolic Signatura—stated to the media that any pro- choice Catholic politician should be refused Holy Communion.3 In late 2009, Rhode Island Bishop Tobin publicly implored U.S. Rep- resentative Patrick Kennedy to stop taking Eucharist because of Kennedy’s pro-choice views.4 While the Catholic Church is consti- * Juris Doctor, Benjamin N.
