  • 2020 Canada Soccer Annual Report
A MESSAGE FROM DR. NICK BONTIS, PRESIDENT Even with so much of the world’s attention focused on the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year, there has been a parallel conversation in many organizations around equity, diversity and inclusion. Whether prompted by the death last May of George Floyd, or simply brought into sharper focus by our collective reckoning with systemic racism, representation is something that no organization – including Canada Soccer – can afford to ignore. That is one reason we have been so focused on diversity in the first 100 days since I was entrusted with the role of President. Our Board of Directors needs to be more reflective of the athletes we represent. It needs to look more like our National Teams. When I was elected, we had two female Directors out of 14, and that, to me, was unacceptable. Slowly, but surely, we will raise the profile of women on the Board and increase our racial diversity. 2 CANADA SOCCER 2020 ANNUAL REPORT One of the first things I did as President was national pride. That shows the power we have in practices, and leverage our expertise so we’re to recommend Charmaine Crooks as Vice- women’s soccer, and we have to communicate not duplicating our efforts. During my first 100 President. The five-time Olympian and Olympic that opportunity to private investors – that days, I’ve reached out to our stakeholders – our silver medallist is the first woman – and the first women’s professional soccer is a long-term member organizations, professional clubs, and black woman – to become a senior officer of viable investment.

  • 2019 Canada Soccer Annual Report
A MESSAGE FROM STEVEN REED, PRESIDENT During my tenure as President, I have had the privilege to continue the momentum established this past decade to ensure that the foundation for Canada Soccer Nation would be further strengthened. Although this Annual Report reflects on the year of 2019, it is that solid footing that has guided us through an unprecedented time in not only our sport but our world. When I reflect on what I will remember most fondly about my three years as President of Canada Soccer, it all comes down to one thing: the people. It is the people within the Canadian soccer community who have banded together to ensure that our players, coaches, officials, volunteers, fans and their families are safe and will return to the pitch and the sidelines when they are secure. It’s about the team this organization has assembled over the last 10 years who, collectively, have brought us to where we are today – the proud co-hosts, with Mexico and the United States, of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™. We are a country to which other FIFA nations now see as a leader in the soccer world. It’s about Peter Montopoli, who as General Secretary brought necessary professionalism to the organization that laid the foundation for all the successes that followed. It’s about my predecessor and now Concacaf President, Victor Montagliani, who believed in—and advanced—our dream of hosting a men’s FIFA World Cup™ on Canadian soil for the first time. It’s about John Herdman, who revamped the women’s program, taking our Women’s National Team to back-to-back bronze medals at the Olympic Games and a place among the top countries in the world.

  • University of Portland Pilots Women's Soccer
University of Portland Pilots women's soccer By Paul Senz The women’s soccer team is the most successful athletic club at the University of Portland (UP), with multiple national championships and other awards. The team began competing in 1980 and, until the 1986 season, was part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In the 1986-1987 season, all women’s athletic teams at UP began competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, in the West Coast Conference. The primary factor in the rapid growth of a small Catholic university's women's soccer team into a national powerhouse has been the high caliber of the coaching staff. The most influential and longest-serving coach for the Portland Pilots women’s soccer team was Clive Charles, who coached the team from 1989 to 2003. In Charles’s final game as a collegiate coach in 2002, the Pilots won the NCAA National Championship in overtime. They won the National Championship again in 2005, becoming only the third women’s soccer team with multiple National Championships (joining North Carolina and Notre Dame). The Pilots play in the Clive Charles Soccer Complex, established in 2004. The large complex consists of a number of high-quality facilities, including Harry A. Merlo Field and the Rev. Chester S. Prusynski, CSC, Practice Field, named in honor of the longtime UP professor and devoted fan. The UP women's soccer team has played a significant role in the increasing popularization of soccer in the United States. Dynamic coaches and talented players have fostered a vibrant soccer-centered culture.
