American Radical Environmental Fiction: Deep Ecology and Eco-Defense in Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang, Paul Chadwick’s Concrete: Think like a Mountain, and T.C. Boyle’s A Friend of the Earth, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2019. The fictional works of American authors Edward Abbey, Paul Chadwick, and T.C. Boyle present a reaction principally to the depletion of the wilderness, destruction of the land, and other environmental ills. Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang, Paul Chadwick’s Concrete: Think like a Mountain, and T.C. Boyle’s A Friend of the Earth reflect the significance of the protection of the natural world through the writers’ radical environmentalist characters who possess an ecocentric worldview which leads to an ecological self. They are in a process of increasing their Self-realization and are ready to defend the natural world in self-defense which evolves into eco-defense because any harm on nature means harm to their greater Self. Their concept of community encompasses all the living and nonliving entities on earth. The radical environmentalist movement, with its deep ecological ideas which they adhere to and act from accordingly, came into being as a result of disillusionment with the inability of mainstream environmentalism to offer long-lasting solutions to current environmental problems. The authors studied in this thesis all believe in some form of radical environmentalism, and created radical environmentalist characters who resort to actions that go beyond mainstream anthropocentric environmentalism. Monkeywrenching, a form of action used by radical environmentalists, targets only inanimate machines and tools which harm nature. This thesis attempts to explore the worldviews and activities of radical environmentalist characters created by Abbey, Chadwick, and Boyle in their attempt to create a better world. The characters they have created focus on the diversity and richness of different forms of interconnected life, and they seek to increase self-realization for all in their pursuit to reach an ultimate Self- realization which aims at the well-being and health of the planet as a counter to the characters of the megamachine, or current anthropocentrist system. vi Keywords: Radical environmental fiction, deep ecology, ecological self, eco-defense, Edward Abbey, Paul Chadwick, T.C. Onların topluluk kavramı insanların sıradan vatandaş oldukları dünyadaki canlı ve cansızların tümünü kapsamaktadır. Derin Ekolojik fikirlere sahip olan ve buna yönelik bir davranış sergileyen radikal çevreci akım, anaakım çevreciliğin güncel çevresel sorunlara uzun süreli çözümler getirememesinin yarattığı hayal kırıklığının bir sonucu olarak ortaya çıktı. Bu tezde eserlerinden faydalanılan yazarların hepsi radikal çevreciliğin bir biçimine inanarak, insan merkezli anaakım çevreciliğin ötesinde metodlar kullanan radikal çevreci karakterler yaratmışlardır. Sözkonusu radikal çevrecilerin kullandığı bir tür teknik olan ekolojik sabotaj sadece cansız makineleri ve doğaya zarar veren aletleri hedef alır. Bu tezin amacı, daha iyi bir dünya yaratmak üzere Abbey, Chadwick ve Boyle tarafından yaratılan radikal çevreci özelliğe sahip karakterlerin dünya görüşlerini ve buna yönelik faaliyetlerini derinlemesine incelemektir. While advocating the destruction of property in defense of wilderness, The Monkey Wrench Gang draws a clear ethical distinction between the destruction of property in defense of wilderness and the harming of people. Yet the sequel, Hayduke Lives!, blurs this ethical line when a security guard is killed during the novel’s final eco-sabotage scene. After exploring several possible textual explanations for this apparent change and then interviewing several of Abbey’s close friends regarding this issue, the author concludes that the shift does not represent a change in Abbey’s worldview, but rather a change in fictional circumstance. Abbey’s works motivate humanity to review its behavior towards the natural world and facilitate the methods of ecological defense. This novel became an inspiration for environmental defence through various ways of sabotaging environmentally destruc tive human interventions. The publication of this novel inaugurated a global ecological campaign named “Earth First!” in 1979. The contemporary eco - centric movements in the West are primarily focused on direct action against man - made factors of environment al degradation. Employed as a form of civil disobedience, ecosabotage has emerged as a significant political form of protest undertaken with the purpose of safeguarding environment. The paper discusses the strategies of environmental protection put forwar d in the novel and also examines the social, political and ethical dimensions of this form of protest that comes dangerously close to acts of terrorism and militancy.     Back of Beyond Books Catalogue No. 15 25th Anniversary 1990 - 2015 1 Back of Beyond Books Rare Book Catalogue No. 15 - August 2015 Back of Beyond Books celebrates our 25th anniversary this year with our largest cata- logue to date. With over 300 items to choose from, we’ve tried to represent the several genres we specialize in yet include a curated potpourri of relevant fun material. The name “Back of Beyond” is taken from Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang. Abbey spent much time in and around Moab. Upon his passing in early 1989, a memorial was held outside Arches National Park and attended by several hundred friends and admirers. At some point during this gathering, the idea of a bookstore to honor Ed’s legacy was germinated. Nine months later the doors opened at 83 N. Main Street in Moab. I purchased the store in August 2004, opening up a rare book corner soon after. In celebration, we proudly announce the publication in facsimile of the manuscript of a speech Ed gave at the University of Montana on April 1, 1985. Dead Horses & Sakred Kows was later published as The Cowboy and His Cow, with numerous changes. The manuscript is filled with Ed’s annotations and deletions and serves as a benchmark to the actual speech Ed presented that night. There are relatively few Abbey manuscripts outside of the University of Arizona Special Collections and we thank Clarke Abbey for this privilege. Brooke Williams has penned an orig- inal essay and Dave Wilder has contributed artwork inspired by Abbey.
