CHANSON, H. (2000). "Hydraulics of Roman Aqueducts : Steep Chutes, Cascades and Dropshafts." American Jl of Archaeology, Vol. 104, No. 1, Jan., pp. 47-72 (ISSN 0002-9114). Hydraulics of Roman Aqueducts : Steep Chutes, Cascades and Dropshafts H. CHANSON Abstract This paper examines the archaeological evidence for steep chutes, cascades and drop shafts in Roman aqueducts. It also presents comparative data on steep descent water flow in aqueducts based on physical model tests. It is suggested that the Romans were aware of the hydraulic problems posed by supercritical water flows, and that the technological solutions they imposed were rudimentary but sound. For example, they understood the need for energy dissipation devices such as stilling basin and dropshaft.* The Roman aqueduct remains one of the best examples of hydraulic expertise in antiquity. Many aqueducts were used, repaired and maintained for centuries and some, such as the aqueduct of Carthage (Tunisia), are still partly in use today.1 Most aqueducts consisted of long, flat sections interspersed by shorter steep drops. Despite arguments suggesting that Roman aqueducts maintained a fluvial flow regime 2, the present study suggests that these steep drops produced supercritical flows requiring a technical response to ensure normal water flow. It is argued that the Romans employed three methods to address this problem: chutes followed by stilling basins, stepped channels, and dropshafts. STEEP CHUTES AND STEPPED CASCADES : HYDRAULIC CONSIDERATIONS A chute is characterized by a steep bed slope associated with torrential flow (fig. 1 and 2). This chute flow may be either smooth (fig. 2A) or stepped (fig. 2B). Roman designers used both designs as well as single drops along aqueducts (Tables 1 and 2).

FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 2020 ©2020 HORSEMAN PUBLISHING CO., LEXINGTON, KY USA • FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL (859) 276-4026 Former USTA President, Racing Exec Phil Langley Dies At 83 F. Phillip “Phil” Langley, 83, president of the U.S. Trotting Association for 13 years, died Saturday, April 11. He was elected as a USTA director in 1983 and became president in 2003 before resigning at the close of 2016. Mr. Langley was admitted to a Chicago-area hospital and underwent triple bypass surgery on March 30. He was in the intensive care unit (ICU) for about a week and improved and was moved into a cardiac care area. But his condition worsened and he was moved back to ICU and testing re- vealed he had covid-19. Mr. Langley’s leadership at the USTA was characterized by great advances in technology, such as online entry for races at all levels and a social media presence that made it possi- ble for people across the globe to follow racing’s people and horses at any time, on any electronic device. Mr. Langley, a native of Wisconsin, learned about racing from his father, who was a mailman, restaurant owner and in the 1930s, took over administration of the Elkhorn Fair and later the Wisconsin State Fair. “I learned to read by helping my dad figure out which horses qualified for a race,” Mr. Langley said. As a boy, he saw the 1943 Hambletonian winner Volo Song race at Elkhorn, Wisc,, where his father was race secretary. The trotter suffered a fatal broken bone and had to be euthanized, a memory that stayed with Mr.

The economic and social contribution of horse racing in Europe September 2009 European Pari Mutuel Association www.parimutuel -europe.org This document is part of a larger effort from EPMA to better describe the horseracing sector in Europe and to track its health over time. The document builds on a joint research investment by McKinsey and Company and EPMA members on the horse racing sector in Europe, to describe the economic flows in the industry and compare the funding of horse racing across countries, as well as to that of other sports. Building a comprehensive and rigorous fact base on the horse racing sector at the European level will be a progressive and long term effort that will be repeated by EPMA on a yearly basis in order to support their ongoing dialogue with policy decision makers in Europe. Members of EPMA are present in 10 countries, traditionally active in developing horseracing and horse breeding (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom). They wish to share their common concerns about developing efficient regulations taking into account the promotion of the equine sector and consumer’s fairness and protection. AB Trav.
