However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes. -

From cinema screen to television programming, vacation theme parks to wardrobe, toys and books, Disney’s consistent ability to entertain children as well as adults has made it a mainstay of popular culture. This research will look at two Disney films, Dumbo (1941)1 and Lilo & Stitch (2002),2 both from distinctly different eras, and analyze the similarities in artistic styling, studio financial climate, and their narrative representation of otherness as it relates to Queer identity. Upholding the Disney Utopia Through American Tragedy: A Study of The Walt Disney Company's Responses to Pearl Harbor and 9/11 Lindsay Goddard Senior Thesis presented to the faculty of the American Studies Department at the University of California, Davis March 2021 Abstract Since its founding in October 1923, The Walt Disney Company has en- dured as an influential preserver of fantasy, traditional American values, and folklore. As a company created to entertain the masses, its films often provide a sense of escapism as well as feelings of nostalgia. The company preserves these sentiments by \Disneyfying" danger in its media to shield viewers from harsh realities. Disneyfication is also utilized in the company's responses to cultural shocks and tragedies as it must carefully navigate maintaining its family-friendly reputation, utopian ideals, and financial interests. This paper addresses The Walt Disney Company's responses to two attacks on US soil: the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the attacks on September 11, 200l and examines the similarities and differences between the two. By utilizing interviews from Disney employees, animated film shorts, historical accounts, insignia, government documents, and newspaper articles, this paper analyzes the continuity of Disney's methods of dealing with tragedy by controlling the narrative through Disneyfication, employing patriotic rhetoric, and reiterat- ing the original values that form Disney's utopian image. The substitutive theory of Americanization is often associated with the Disney Company’s global expansion; however, my work looks at this idea as multifaceted. By focusing on the Disney Company’s relationship with the Japanese consumer market, I am able to provide evidence of instances when influence from the local Japanese culture appears in both Disney animation and products. For example, Stitch contains many of the same physical characteristics found in both Japanese anime and manga characters, and a small shop selling local Japanese crafts is located inside the Tokyo Disneyland theme park. I completed onsite research at Tokyo Disneyland and learned about city life in Tokyo. -

Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ Patti Duncan The Disney Princesses are some of the most beloved and well-recognized characters in animation across the globe. Most of these characters sing throughout their movie. This essay analyzes what I refer to as the “I Want” song of several Disney Princesses. It is divided into three sections, one for each of the main themes described in these songs: true love, freedom, and self-acceptance. It was found that the Disney Princesses follow a basic chronological line in their desires. The oldest characters desire love, while the newest want to be happy with who they are inside. Because these films and their music have been treasured for decades, these characters can strongly influence viewers’ lives. Where appropriate, the potential impacts of choosing certain Disney Princesses for role models is discussed. An appendix is included with the lyrics for each analyzed song. Contact: [email protected] Neo-Disney: Recent Developments in Disney Feature Animation Dr. Chris Pallant Introduction The Princess and the Frog (Ron Clements and John Musker, 2009) marks a return by Disney to its hand-drawn roots. Understandably, many responses to the film have centred on its protagonist, Tiana, Disney’s first black Princess. This focus, however, has drawn attention away from the fact that with this latest release the Studio has also returned to a more traditional style of filmmaking.1 Significantly, Disney’s previous 2D hand-drawn film, Home on the Range (Will Finn and John Sanford, 2004), concluded what had been a stylistically progressive sequence of theatrically released features which broke with the hyperrealist conventions most commonly associated with the Studio’s feature animation. Comprising of Fantasia 2000 (James Algar et al., 1999), The Emperor’s New Groove (Mark Dindal, 2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, 2001), Lilo and Stitch (Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, 2002), Treasure Planet (Ron Clements and John Musker, 2002), Brother Bear (Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, 2003), and Home on the Range, this critically neglected period of feature animation provides the focus of this article; to help distinguish this discrete sequence of films from the larger Disney canon, they will be referred to as Neo-Disney features. -
