The literature on the birds of this area is excessively scattered, and one of the functions of this review paper is to provide bibliographic references to recent litera- ture of the various species, in order to make it more readily available to new students. Another object of this paper, as of the previous install- ments of this series, is to indicate intraspecific trends of geographic varia- tion in the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands and to state for each species from where it colonized northern Melanesia. Such in- formation is recorded in preparation of an eventual zoogeographic and evolutionary analysis of the bird fauna of the area. Suborder PASSERES (or POLYMYODI): Oscines (Songbirds) The arrangement of songbirds in the 1970 Checklist (Checklist Committee 1970) was based on the premise that the species endemic to the Australasian region were derived directly from Eurasian groups and belonged in Old World families (e.g. Gerygone and Petroica in Muscicapidae). The 1990 Checklist (Checklist Committee 1990) followed the Australian lead in allocating various native songbirds to their own Australasian families (e.g. Gerygone to Acanthizidae, and Petroica to Eopsaltriidae), but the sequence was still based largely on the old Peters-Mayr arrangement. Since the late 1980s, when the 1990 Checklist was finalised, evidence from molecular biology, especially DNA studies, has shown that most of the Australian and New Zealand endemic songbirds are the product of a major Australasian radiation parallel to the radiation of songbirds in Eurasia and elsewhere. Many superficial morphological and ecological similarities between Australasian and Eurasian songbirds are the result of convergent evolution. Sibley & Ahlquist (1985, 1990) and Sibley et al. (1988) recognised a division of the songbirds into two groups which were called Corvida and Passerida (Sibley & Ahlquist 1990). -

Grallina Cyanoleuca in This Paper I Describe an Unusual Foraging
AUSTRALIAN 238 HOBBS: Australian Magpie-lark, Feeding Method BIRD WATCHER Gyrating as a Feeding Method of the Australian Magpie-lark Grallina cyanoleuca In this paper I describe an unusual foraging behaviour observed among Australian Magpie-larks Grallina cyanoleuca at Dareton, New South Wales (July to mid August 1984) and Buronga, N.S.W. (July 1985). At Dareton at least six Magpie-larks were seen feeding in a freshly mulched strawberry patch in which many small earthworms Lumbricus sp. were present several centimetres below the surface. In an open area between the plants each Magpie-lark gyrated on a single spot, shuffling its legs quickly as it moved in a small circle. No distinctive foot movements such as kicking or stirring were noted. This action formed a saucer-like depression in the mulch about 15 em in diameter and up to 3 em deep, sufficiently deep to expose the worm layer. After five or six turns the Magpie-la:rks stopped, made a half turn in the reverse direction, and picked up any exposed worms. It is possible that some worms wriggled upwards into the depression in response to the disturbance caused by the moving feet. The gyrations were made in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. This behaviour continued daily until mid August by which time foliage of the strawberry plants was covering the mulch, making it inaccessible to the birds. At Buronga, I watched five Magpie-larks feeding in an irrigated pasture. Water had receded leaving a small pool about 2 em deep in a grassed depression. The Magpie-larks were walking and standing in this pool and gyrating in the same manner as observed at Dareton. -

Dr Karen Rowe & Dr Amy Adams, Museums Victoria Victorian National Parks Association The Victorian National Parks Association (VNPA) helps to shape the agenda for creating and managing national parks, conservation reserves and other important natural areas across land and sea. We work with all levels of government, the scientific community and the general community to achieve long term, best practice environmental outcomes. The VNPA is also Victoria’s largest bush walking club and provides a range of information, education and activity programs to encourage Victorians to get active for nature. NatureWatch NatureWatch is a citizen science program which engages the community in collecting scientific data on Victorian native plants and animals. The program builds links between community members, scientists and land managers to develop scientific, practical projects that contribute to a better understanding of species and ecosystems, and contributes to improved management of natural areas. Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Tropical Birding Tour Report
AUSTRALIA’S TOP END Victoria River to Kakadu 9 – 17 October 2009 Tour Leader: Iain Campbell Having run the Northern Territory trip every year since 2005, and multiple times in some years, I figured it really is about time that I wrote a trip report for this tour. The tour program changed this year as it was just so dry in central Australia, we decided to limit the tour to the Top End where the birding is always spectacular, and skip the Central Australia section where birding is beginning to feel like pulling teeth; so you end up with a shorter but jam-packed tour laden with parrots, pigeons, finches, and honeyeaters. Throw in some amazing scenery, rock art, big crocs, and thriving aboriginal culture you have a fantastic tour. As for the list, we pretty much got everything, as this is the kind of tour where by the nature of the birding, you can leave with very few gaps in the list. 9 October: Around Darwin The Top End trip started around three in the afternoon, and the very first thing we did was shoot out to Fogg Dam. This is a wetlands to behold, as you drive along a causeway with hundreds of Intermediate Egrets, Magpie-Geese, Pied Herons, Green Pygmy-geese, Royal Spoonbills, Rajah Shelducks, and Comb-crested Jacanas all close and very easy to see. While we were watching the waterbirds, we had tens of Whistling Kites and Black Kites circling overhead. When I was a child birder and thought of the Top End, Fogg Dam and it's birds was the image in my mind, so it is always great to see the reaction of others when they see it for the first time. -

ISLANDS OF THE LESSER SUNDAS AND REMOTE MOLUCCAS 12 August – 7 October 2009 and 27 October - 7 November 2009 George Wagner [email protected] ISLANDS VISITED: Bali, Sumba, Timor, Flores, Komoto, Ambon, Tanimbars, Kais, Seram and Buru INTRODUCTION Indonesia, being a nation of islands, contains over 350 endemic species of birds. Of those, over 100 are only found in the Lesser Sundas and remote Moluccas. Having visited Indonesia in past years, I knew it to be safe and cheap for independent birders like myself. I decided to dedicate some four months to the process of birding these remote destinations. Richard Hopf, whom I have joined on other trips, also expressed interest in such a venture, at least for the Lesser Sundas. We started planning a trip for July 2009. Much of the most recent information in the birding public domain was in the form of tour trip reports, which are self- serving and don’t impart much information about specific sites or logistics. There are a few exceptions and one outstanding one is the trip report by Henk Hendriks for the Lesser Sundas (2008). It has all the information that anyone might need when planning such a trip, including maps. We followed it religiously and I would encourage others to consult it before all others. My modest contribution in the form of this trip report is to simply offer an independent approach to visiting some of the most out of the ordinary birding sites in the world. It became clear from the beginning that the best approach was simply to go and make arrangements along the way. -

Water is a precious resource in the Australian deserts, so watering holes like this one near Georgetown are incredible places for concentrating wildlife. A voyage to the land of Oz is guaranteed to be filled with novelty and wonder, regardless of whether we’ve been to the country previously. This was true for our group this year, with everyone coming away awed and excited by any number of a litany of great experiences, whether they had already been in the country for three weeks or were beginning their Aussie journey in Darwin. Given the far-flung locales we visit, this itinerary often provides the full spectrum of weather, and this year that was true to the extreme. The drought which had gripped much of Australia for months on end was still in full effect upon our arrival at Darwin in the steamy Top End, and Georgetown was equally hot, though about as dry as Darwin was humid. The warmth persisted along the Queensland coast in Cairns, while weather on the Atherton Tablelands and at Lamington National Park was mild and quite pleasant, a prelude to the pendulum swinging the other way. During our final hours below O’Reilly’s, a system came through bringing with it strong winds (and a brush fire warning that unfortunately turned out all too prescient).
