SF Giants Press Clips Sunday, April 9, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Sunday, April 9, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants fall to 1-5 despite Bumgarner complete game Henry Schulman SAN DIEGO - The Padres, who were supposed to lose something like 159 games this year, started a Rule 5 shortstop Saturday night who had not played one game above rookie ball before Opening Day. As Allen Cordoba and the rest of the Padres have shown the past two games, if nine players are wearing major-league uniforms, they can beat you, especially if you play subpar baseball. Heaven knows Giants have not been able to dust the word "subpar" off their uniforms, which hardly got dirty in a 2-1 loss that secured a series loss to a team widely being mocked and criticized for tanking the season. For the first time since 2008, the last of four straight losing seasons, the Giants have started with five losses in six games. They conclude a terrible opening week Sunday. How terrible could be settled by Johnny Cueto, who pitched and ran the Giants to their only win Tuesday. Madison Bumgarner took his first loss Saturday despite overcoming a rough first two innings and holding San Diego to two runs over eight innings in a complete games. 1 With one out in the eighth and nobody on, manager Bruce Bochy let him hit for himself. Bumgarner could have used the two solo homers he hit on Opening Day, but neither he nor his eight mates could solve Jhoulys Chacin, who shut them out on three hits over 6 2/3 innings after the Dodgers torched him for nine runs in 3 1/3 in his first start. -

Jose Ramirez Looked to Be the Only Person Inside Goodyear Ballpark Who Immediately Realized What He Had Pulled Off Sunday Afternoon
Alert Ramirez sparks Indians' rare triple play By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Jose Ramirez looked to be the only person inside Goodyear Ballpark who immediately realized what he had pulled off Sunday afternoon. The crowd was buzzing as they discussed the play that unfolded in front of them and it took a few moments before the umpires let Cleveland's fielders return to the dugout. In the sixth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Brewers, Ramirez swiftly recorded a pair of outs to ignite a unique triple play with the bases loaded, providing the highlight of Cleveland's split-squad games against Milwaukee and Kansas City. The three outs were recorded so fast that manager Terry Francona quipped the Indians could have notched four on the play. "There were outs everywhere," Francona said. Brewers manager Craig Counsell agreed. "They could have gotten four outs on that play, very easily could have gotten four outs," Counsell said. "It's a crazy thing. You come to the field and see something [like that]. I think everyone in our dugout said they'd never seen anything like that." The play began with Jonathan Villar on first, Christian Yelich on second and Stephen Vogt on third base for the Brewers against Indians righty Matt Belisle. Travis Shaw then sent a soft looping liner up the third-base line, where Vogt was caught in between. If he bolted home and Ramirez snared the ball for an out, Vogt could have been doubled up at third. Instead of making the catch, Ramirez gloved the ball on a short hop, introducing a bit of chaos. -

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings June 23, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1963-The Reds complete a four-game sweep of Houston, allowing only one run. Jim O’Toole, Jim Maloney, Bob Purkey, Jim Tsitouris and Joe Nuxhall combined to pitch 32 consecutive scoreless innings MLB.COM Inbox: Can the Reds depend on Bailey? Beat reporter Mark Sheldon answers questions from fans By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | June 22nd, 2017 + 43 COMMENTS What can the Reds expect from Homer Bailey? -- Charlie on Facebook live It's a good question. Bailey will be activated from the 60-day disabled list on Saturday to make his season debut vs. the Nationals. He's a bit of an X-factor, because it's hard to place high expectations on someone who has had three elbow surgeries and only eight starts since August 2014. The last surgery was Feb. 18 to remove bone chips. But based on his rehab assignment numbers, they should expect some length and dependability. The rotation has averaged 4.93 innings per start this season. If Bailey can just go six or seven innings and keep the team in the game, the lineup should be able to do its part. What is Zack Cozart's prognosis on the DL with a right quad strain? -- Molly on Facebook live Cozart, who went on the DL on Monday, was expecting to begin baseball activity on Friday in Washington after a few days of rest. He was optimistic that he could be ready for activation on the first day he is eligible, which is Wednesday. -
