This summer has seen a big breakthrough for William who has shot to national prominence. • Also competing in the Tasmanian T&F Championships in Hobart last weekend, 17 year old Alice Randall won the Open Women’s 5000m walk in a 27 sec PB time of 23:59.24. Alice won the U18 5000m walk at the 2017 Australian Junior T&F Championships a year ago and won the Australian U20 10km roadwalk in Wollongong last August, but her times are now in another class. • Competingin the Queensland T&F Championships in Brisbane last weekend, 15 year old Nelson McCutcheon scored his own double, winning the U17 5000m walk on Thursday in a 48 sec PB time of 21:45.01, then backing up on Sunday to win the U10 10,000m walk with an inaugural time of 48:16.40. -

They brought home a veritable treasure trove of gold, silver and bronze medals, along with a record number of perpetual shields. Many of them lined up for multiple events and everyone dug deep for the team. I could hone in on one or two particular standout performances (it would be a hard ask but I could try) but I feel that would be unfair. It was a true team effort and everyone deserves my ‘Walker of the Week”. You can read the finer details later in the newsletter. HEEL AND TOE ONLINE The official organ of the Victorian Race Walking Club 2013/2014 Number 19 4 February 2014 VRWC Preferred Supplier of Shoes, clothes and sporting accessories. Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours : Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.aU Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Runners-World/235649459888840 TIM'S WALKER OF THE WEEK There were plenty of good performances at the Australian 20km Summer Championship meet in Hobart on Sunday but none better than those of Jemima Montag and Jesse Osborne who won the Junior 10km events so it was an easy task to decide on them as joint winners of this week's Walker of the Week. • 15 year old Jemima Montag was dominant in the Junior Women's race, going straight to the lead and passing through the 5km mark in just over 22 mins for a big 5km PB. She did understandably slow from there on but her finishing time of 47:00 was a 2:22 PB. It is a shame that she is too young for this year's World Junior Champs but she is eligible to contest the World Cup and, like Jesse, is an automatic selection as winner of the trial. • 19 year old Jesse also strode straight to the lead in the Junior Men's race and was on target for a sub-41 at the 6km mark before fading slightly in the warming morning conditions. -

This was the only A qualifier done on the day in the horrendous conditions and it was her third win in a row in this annual championship. This confirmed her Olympic spot and was a dominant display. This week, I am going to balance the equation and announce my walker of the week as Jared Tallent. Jared and Claire flew out on the Sunday morning after their heroics in Hobart and both contested 20km races a week later in what was a big weekend carnival of walking in Chihuahua in Mexico – and both were successful, earning silvers in their respective events. Jared fought it out with Eder Sanchez of Mexico, taking silver in 1:21:50 while Claire fought it out with Portuguese walker Ines Henriques, also taking silver in 1:33:21. You can read about both their performances later in the newsletter. He joins Jemima Montag and Dane Bird-Smith who have already been pre-selected for the 20km. Further 20km walk additions are likely to take place when the qualification period for that event finishes on 29 th June. See the announcement at https://www.athletics.com.au/news/marathoners-selected-for-tokyo-2020-australian-olympic-team/. Well done Rhydian on your second Olympics. It is a just reward for all your hard work. I thought the MorelandStar (https://www.facebook.com/morelandstarnews/) summed it all up nicely LOCAL RESIDENT SELECTED FOR THE 2021 OLYMPICS The Australian Olympic Committee announced yesterday that Fawkner resident Rhydian Cowley has been selected for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games in the 50km Racewalk. If you walk along the Merri Creek trail, perhaps you’ve seen Rhydian as it’s where he does a lot of his training – particularly during lockdown. In addition to sessions at the gym, he says he walks between 105 to 150 kms per week. -

Open Men 50 km walk The main event in this meet is always the 50km and, in 2011, it saw nearly 80 entrants, a huge field indeed. Near perfect weather on the Saturday morning meant that big times were on the cards and the walkers did not disappoint. 2010 World Race Walking Cup 50km winner Matej Tóth went in as a clear favourite and he was in a class of his own, delighting the crowd by going to the front immediately and quickly building a convincing lead over the chasing pack. At 40km, he was on target for a time around 3:37 and it was only the strengthening wind in the dying stages of the race which forced him to slow, his final time still a PB and a new Slovakian national record. “It was like I wanted; fast to begin with and then I try to see whether I can keep up the pace. -
