Although the World Dog Shows normally take place over four days, the Austrians ventured to hold the event over just 3 days. This meant a considerable increase in the daily number of competitors, which resulted in various difficulties. Experts had reckoned with more than 20,000 dogs taking part in the WDS 2012, so there was some surprise and disappointment when, with a figure of 18,608 dogs, this magic number was not reached. Looking at the causes, it is evident that the shortfall was mainly among those breeds that are still predominantly docked/ cropped in Eastern Europe, but were not admitted in Salzburg. The Austrian Kennel Club succeeded in organising and running this big event with flying colours and without any major hitches. The club and all the officials involved deserve our thanks and recognition for this performance. In appreciation of this and on behalf of the entire team, Dr Michael Kreiner, President of the Austrian Kennel Club, and Ms Margrit Brenner, the WDS Director, were awarded a badge of honour by the FCI.

Seidler. Official language (DE). ORIGIN: Germany. DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE OFFICIAL VALID STANDARD: 24.07.1996. UTILIZATION: Flushing Dog, versatile hunting dog. FCI-CLASSIFICATION: Group 8 Retrievers, Flushing Dogs, Water Dogs. Section 2 Flushing Dogs. With working trial. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: From hunting literature, it can be proved that hunting dogs resembling the present day Wachtelhund have existed for centuries and have been used for flushing game. The term « Wachtelhund » also has historic origins. Breeding of the German Spaniel, according to a stud book, began at the turn of the century. The progenitor of the breed was « Lord Augusta 1834 L », who came from Staufenberg (Upper Bavaria). Pure breeding began with a few suitable bitches. At first only brown dogs (sometimes with white markings), and white-brown dogs were bred, the latter occasionally with small tan (red) markings on head and legs, the so-called « Brand ». Through the bitch, « Baby auf der Schanze 1838 L », the brown roan colour occurred in the breed. Rudolf Friess (R.F.), who influenced the breeding of the German Spaniel for decades, introduced the separate colour breeding for browns and roans. By carefully planned matings within both colour strains he succeded to establish the important precondition - in spite of the small gene pool - to keep away from the damages through inbreeding. The separation of the colour strains seemed also sensible in view of the somewhat different dispositions of the dogs.

C. Phillips Received: 23 March 2017; Accepted: 27 May 2017; Published: 30 May 2017 Simple Summary: Birth weight is a key factor for neonatal mortality and morbidity in most mammalian species. The great morphological variability in size, body weight and breed, as well as in skeletal and cranial conformation makes it challenging to define birth weight standards in dogs. A total of 3293 purebred pups were surveyed to study which maternal aspects can determine birth weight considering head and body shape, size, body weight and breed in bitches, as well as litter size and sex in pups. In our sample, multivariate analysis outcomes suggested that birth weight and litter size were directly proportional to maternal size. The maternal body shape influenced both birth weight and litter size, whereas the maternal head shape had impact only on birth weight. Sex differences in birth weight were found. Birth weight and litter size also varied among breeds.

  • Standards, Health and Genetics in Dogs
Standards, Health and Genetics in Dogs CHAPTER I - The struggle against hypertypes: an old dog fancier’s point of view Raymond Triquet Les Barris 24210 Montagnac d’Auberoche (France) Abstract - After more than 50 years’ experience in canine organisations, the author attempts to show how a dog fancier’s perspective may differ from that of a scientist when it comes to defining and dealing with hypertypes. In dog shows, the all-importance of champions has resulted in beauty, or the perception of what is beautiful, taking precedence over what is good. However, the most beautiful dogs should also be the most functional. We examine the roles of veterinarians and judges. We can attempt to judge dogs collectively, give more importance to gaiting and less to stacking, insist on a working trial from all dogs if they are to become champions, and ensure that the standards, which should be written with care, are respected by all those concerned within the FCI. A number of exaggerations must be corrected. It is important to relentlessly educate and convince, and to demonstrate moderation in all things. Keywords: Dogs, Breeding, Selection, Hypertype, Cynology. PREAMBLE This text has been published in French in three journals (Ethnozootechnie, Revue de la Cynophilie Française, and the Bulletin de la SADB); the originality of its presentation in this book does not therefore lie in a new version of the text in French, but in its distribution to a wider international audience through its English translation. A young author once asked Victor Hugo what he was reading, and was told: “At my age, sir, one does not read, one reads over again”.
