Playing like one, Affl alo is having quite the year and his play has brought many to believe in his worthiness of a fi rst All-Star appearance. But, the NBA we have all come to un- derstand is not one to commend a great player, on a bad team. Give it up for @nhnets Despite having a career year and ranking among the top shooting guards in practically every sta- #GiveItUpForGood tistical category, Affl alo’s hopes of making his fi rst NBA All-Star team were dashed on Thursday when he was left off the team. Clearly, Orlando’s 12-35 record factored into the decision to pick the likes of DerMar DeRo- zan and Joe Johnson ahead of Orlando’s standout guard.

  • Atlanta Hawks Sign Veteran Center Jason Collins
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, September 2, 2009 CONTACT: Arthur Triche, Jon Steinberg or Jason Roose, Hawks Media Relations (404) 878-3800 ATLANTA HAWKS SIGN VETERAN CENTER JASON COLLINS ATLANTA, GA ----- The Atlanta Hawks have signed veteran center Jason Collins, according to Executive Vice President/General Manager Rick Sund. Per team policy, terms were not announced. “Jason provides us with additional size and a good interior defensive presence,” Sund said. “He has extensive experience, having started in two NBA Finals with the Nets, and is another player with strong character and leadership qualities.” An eight-year veteran, Collins spent last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he appeared in 31 games (22 starts), and averaged 1.8 ppg and 2.3 rpg. He spent his first six-and-a-half seasons with the New Jersey Nets, where he appeared in 510 contests (starting 404 of them) before he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on February 4, 2008 in exchange for Stromile Swift. He then came to the Timberwolves as part of an eight-player deal on June 26, 2008 that also involved Kevin Love and O.J. Mayo. Collins has played in 572 career regular season games, including 429 starting assignments, averaging 4.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 1.0 apg in 23.4 mpg (.410 FG%, .648 FT%). Collins also has significant postseason experience, playing in 75 playoff games (3.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg), including two trips to the NBA Finals with the Nets in 2002 and 2003. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Julie Mason (412-496-3196) GATORADE® NATIONAL BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: BRANDON KNIGHT Former Miami Heat Center and Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year Alonzo Mourning Surprises Standout with Elite Honor FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (March 23, 2010) – In its 25th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Brandon Knight of Pine Crest School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) as its 2009-10 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Knight was surprised with the news during his second period class at Pine Crest School by former Miami Heat Center Alonzo Mourning, who earned Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors in 1987-88. “When I received this award in 1988, it was a really significant moment for me, so it felt great to surprise Brandon with the news and invite him into one of the most prestigious legacy programs in high school sports,” said Mourning, a Gold Medalist, seven-time NBA All-Star, and two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. “Gatorade has been on the sidelines fueling athletic performance for years, so to be recognized by a brand that understands the game and truly helps athletes perform is a huge honor for these kids.” Knight becomes the first-ever student athlete from the state of Florida to repeat as Gatorade National Player of the Year in any sport. He joins 2009 NBA MVP LeBron James (2002-03 & 2001-02, St. Vincent-St. Mary, Akron, Ohio) and 2007 NBA Draft Number One Overall Pick Greg Oden (2005-06 & 2004-05, Lawrence North, Indianapolis, Ind.) as the only student-athletes to win Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons.

Eric Snow understands leadership, and it’s why he’s continued to be recognized for possessing that quality even after his NBA career ended following the ‘07-08 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Snow elaborated on his concept of leadership by penning his first book — Leading High Performers: The Ultimate Guide to Being a Fast, Fluid and Flexible Leader. In the book, Snow analyzes the leadership characteristics that helped him maintain a successful 13-year NBA career, which included NBA Finals appearances for three teams — the Seattle Supersonics, Philadelphia 76ers and Cavaliers. Now an analyst for NBA TV, Snow wrote this book not only for athletes but for people looking to enhance their opportunities for success in any walk of life. SLAMonline caught up with him at the NBA Store in New York City, where he was signing autographs for Leading High Performers.
