One such event is Holi, the festival of colours. It is normally celebrated on the full moon day of March. Although Holi celbrated in Rajasthan, Mathura, Awadh and Varanasi are internationally known, Holi is also celebrated across other parts of India in the West, South and East too. They are known by different names and modus of celebrations vary. But at the heart, the theme remains the same - Triumph of Right over evil. -

Sarajubala Devi NERIE-NCERT, Shillong [email protected] ==================================================================== Abstract Through curse the addresser expresses his/her inner feelings and attitudes towards the hearer, when s/he is angry or dissatisfied of the behavior of the hearer. Curse by its nature are associated with one’s culture, tradition and religion. This study attempts to look into the characteristics and functions of the curse utterances in Meiteilon, the language of Meiteis in Manipur. Few examples of Meiteilon curse are examined through the concepts from Speech Act theory and Ethnography of communication, and try to find out the underlying social and cultural principles. Keywords: Curse, Speech Act, Meiteilon, Cultural value, Belief system Introduction Cursing is a characteristic of almost every society. However, it varies from society to society depending on their belief, culture and power relation. And selection of the cursing words also depends upon the available socio-religious belief of the community. Moreover, curse utterances are a remarkable linguistic form. Meiteilon (Manipuri language) has numerous curse expressions. This paper intends to highlight the characteristics and functions of curse utterances in Meitei society of Manipur by examining specific examples with concepts from speech act theory and ethnography of communication. The selected examples illustrate that the curse utterances have creativity and verbal flexibility within rather strict morphological and syntactical rules. The examples are collected from few individual elders of the community. -

The origin of Manipuri Dance which is interwoven by various social and cultural values can be traced back to early period of history which again had linked to mythology of excellent metaphysical stories. Further, the paper also discusses on the role of artists. It is to be noted that when artists only in accordance with their benefactors and for earning income only in business motives, it is an unruly act of defaming the innate values of the art. Just to reap the rightmost fruits of any art, the artist has the responsibility of obeying the required qualities of being a true artist. An artist has to know the inner beauty that only refined persons can feel of the particular art and for dance it is the first and foremost task of any dancer. With the understanding of the underlying intrinsic value of the art, an artist then can begin to learn vibrant facets of the art by keeping in touch with the teachers who can impart them the in-depth education of the particular art. -

It is practiced since from the early period of time. Visual arts documented the past history of human civilization and it also takes the major role for making the complete society. It was also used as a tool for dispersing religious movement within the society. Here, we can remind different religious phases of Meetei’s/Meitei’s. First the pre-Hindu or pre-Vaishnavite religion, second the Hindu or Vaishnavite religion movement and third phase revivalist movement of traditional Meetei/Meitei religion. In these three phases visual art has used for moving ahead different aesthetic meaning of their different religious activities. Archives and excavation reveal the importance of art forms in the socio-religious lives of a group of people. Academically Visual Arts we mainly referred to Painting, Sculpture, Print making and Applied Art. Beyond these, other medium such as installation is also implicated in the present visual arts trend. This type of art form i.e. installation is still practicing since from the time immemorial. -

Bebita Devi Abstract: The Bamon (Manipuri Brahman) form a part of Manipuri society. Manipuri Brahmans are somehow different from Brahmans in other parts of the country. One possible reason for such a difference is that when they started inhabiting in this tiny State they imbibed many of the traditions and culture of the local dominant community, the Meeteis, on the other they are the offspring of Brahman migrants and local women of Manipur valley. This article counters the arguments that great expansion of Muslim in India and stability of Manipur valley facilitated the people of neighbouring countries to enter into Manipur, so number of migrants especially the Brahmans in Manipur grew substantially. It is also found that the requirements of the state endorse the Brahmans migration in Manipur. Key Words: Migration, Assimilation, Brahman, Caste, Hinduism, Vaishnava, Sanskritization/ Hinduization. I. Introduction The spatial population movement, which is generally referred to as „migration‟, had occurred all through the history (and still continuing, though in a different form within specific legal bounds). If we take into account the human origin theory which locates the origin of human beings in Africa, it will not be wrong to claim that we are all migrants. Throughout the past, people moved from one place to another beginning with the movements of the first human group from their place of origin in East Africa to their present homes. -

ABSTRACT The paper focuses on one of the most controversial identity issues prevailed in Manipur. As a paradigm it attempts to highlight the ethnic identity of Sorha alias Thaowon Saamtharnu the biological mother of King Pamheiba (Garib Niwaz) of Manipur that was conceal for more than three centuries which is proven only by the Chothe folklore. It explains how because of her controversial marriage life, politico-religion and primogeniture issues in the king’s court her true identity was concealed. It also highlights, how her story served as a living example for such anonymity and suppressive attitudes of the valley people in the process of cross-cultural marriage system, especially towards the tribal women of Manipur. The paper analyses both the oral narrations as well as few literatures to substantiate the point of view. Thus, highlighting the prevailing superior and inferior suppressive attitude and culture in Manipur based on politico-religious ground that was developed and rooted from early 18th century with the arrival of Vaishnavism/ Hinduism in Manipur, and that continues to be so by some. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION The present study attempts to assess the livelihood and human security among women in Manipur. The study also tries to understand the context of women towards vulnerability and to explore the relationship between livelihood assets, problems, coping strategies and human security. Every aspect of human life changes so fast in all directions – in terms of social, cultural, economic, political, ecological, intellectual, professional, psychological, and technological dimensions in human living. These kinds of shift make people change in their living conditions, perspectives and belief system – looking forward to a new way of life expecting more comfortable and improved, but it is neither easy to reach that condition of living nor enough at once if one can. Simultaneously, there is an emergence of new problems and challenges – to achieve the goal as well as to make the achieved sustainable. Sustainability becomes significant considering questions on livelihood so that one has to be in a position to cope with any kind of precarious situations and disturbances in continuing those ways of living. At the same time, the human population is increasing day-by-day, leading to a context where there is a rapidly growing demand for resources for human consumption. There is a huge difference between educated-uneducated, trained-untrained, skilled- unskilled and professional-nonprofessional in grasping the opportunities in various fields like employment, accessibility and public distribution systems. As a result, the class difference has become wider in every society. In other words, as poverty becomes one of the biggest challenges in the developmental process of every society, there is a growing socio-economic and developmental gap regionally and politically. -

Sarajubala Devi Article History Received: 08.02.2021 Accepted: 15.02.2021 Published: 19.02.2021 Abstract: Hinduism which emerged in the 18th century is the dominant religion of the Meiteis in the state of Manipur. It was accepted as a state religion in 1714 AD during the reign of king Garibaniwaj. There was a systematic process of induction of the religion in the minds of the earlier Non Hindu people of the state. Brahmins from the neighbhouring states were deployed in the court for every possible rites and rituals performed in state. In almost all the possible localities a Brahmin was deployed with patronization either from the king or by the locality. These Brahmins and other Manipuri scholars compiled and translated various Hindu scriptures written in Sanskrit and in Bengali into Manipuri for easy access by the mass. It is during this period that Sanskrit, Bengali and Hindi elements were systematically incorporated in culture, religion, polity and language. As a result of this 18th century and early 19th century Manipuri literature has marked influence of the Sanskrit and Bengali literatures. A number of religious books was translated and adapted versions of many such literature emerged in this period. -
