We’re looking forward to another Visions of Peace at the Crossroads Festival, where we’ll hear great music, poetry and storytelling. Dear Peacemakers, I want to remind you of upcoming events: Trifecta Resista this weekend raising awareness and opposition to three evils our nation: continued production of nuclear weapons; use of drones for extrajudicial assassinations and surveillance; and attacks on whistleblowers and increasing state secrecy. See below for a calendar of events. And we’re busy finishing plans for our annual Visions of Peace at the Crossroads Festival, that will take place June6 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The Festival is again at the First Friday Art Walk from 6:00 to 9:00pm, at 18th and Baltimore, KCMO. Twenty-five organizations are supporting and participating in the Festival. Performers will feature: Nicolette Paige, who uniquely combines multiple genres of music from folk, reggae and R & B to soul; and Royalphonic –“The music we play is funky, jazzy and worldly. Each member brings their own style to the stage and together we play with our hearts to form Royalphonic!" and Streetlevel Uprising, - Explosive socially conscious lyrics in a blend of Reggae, Rock and laid back groove musical styles. Performer will also include: storyteller Molly Postlewait; singers Bro. John Anderson & Viola Woods; poets Jordan Ashley Hocker, Janey Harris and Bill Peck; Midwest InterPlay; and If I Could Change The World Spoken Word Youth and more.. And we have 25 peace and justice organizations supporting the event and tabling with information about “Changing the World.” See performance schedule at: http://afsc.org/document/visions-peace-festival-performane-schedule-2014 We will have also have the “Lend Us Your Hands For Peace” Art / Video Action, tabling social change groups, peace parade and more. Can you volunteer on Friday, June 6 1-3pm - loading truck; 4-6:00pm -unloading and Festival set up; 6-9pm -staffing tables; 9-10pm -clean up / loading truck; and on Saturday June 7, 10 – 11:30AM -unloading truck (tables and chairs) Email us at [email protected] to volunteer letting us know when you can help! And we are excited about the response to our summer Social Change Institute for high school- aged youth, June 9-13 and June 16-20, weekdays from 1:00 to 5:00pm. So far we have 22 applicants for the 14 slots. Applications will be accepted until May 30. Sam and Erin, AFSC Peace Interns, and I are working to provide an interactive hands-on experience. We are reviewing creative training activities and beginning to invite guest speakers to talk about their issues and organizing strategies. Throughout the Institute we will work to apply what youth learn from understanding the theories, mechanisms and tactics of social change to organizing a social change action. This part-time paid eight to ten hour per week internship, August 2014 – June 2015 has been a powerful experience for past interns who have helped us make our youth programs a great success. Sat., May 31: rallies at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas (at 10 am—seeking pardon for whistle-blower Chelsea Manning, who has begun serving a 35-year sentence there) and Bannister Federal Complex (at 3 pm—seeking extensive clean-up of the toxins there from production of parts for nuclear weapons and calling for freedom from nuclear weapons by 2020). Meals, discussions and talks will be at DeLaSalle, with 7 pm talks by Voices for Creative Non-Violence leaders Kathy Kelly, Brian Terrell, and (from the United Kingdom) Maya Evans. Join us in planning and conducting a community listening project on the unmet needs in our community and the impact of budget cutting. Following hearing from community leaders we will hold forums, meeting with media and elected officials and mobilize community members in calling for budgets that meet community needs.
