  • The Best Totally-Not-Planned 'Shockers'
Style Blog The best totally-not-planned ‘shockers’ in the history of the VMAs By Lavanya Ramanathan August 30 If you have watched a music video in the past decade, you probably did not watch it on MTV, a network now mostly stuck in a never-ending loop of episodes of “Teen Mom.” This fact does not stop MTV from continuing to hold the annual Video Music Awards, and it does not stop us from tuning in. Whereas this year’s Grammys were kind of depressing, we can count on the VMAs to be a slightly morally objectionable mess of good theater. (MTV has been boasting that it has pretty much handed over the keys to Miley Cyrus, this year’s host, after all.) [VMAs 2015 FAQ: Where to watch the show, who’s performing, red carpet details] Whether it’s “real” or not doesn’t matter. Each year, the VMAs deliver exactly one ugly, cringe-worthy and sometimes actually surprising event that imprints itself in our brains, never to be forgotten. Before Sunday’s show — and before Nicki Minaj probably delivers this year’s teachable moment — here are just a few of those memorable VMA shockers. 1984: Madonna sings about virginity in front of a blacktie audience It was the first VMAs, Bette Midler (who?) was co-hosting and the audience back then was a sea of tux-wearing stiffs. This is all-important scene-setting for a groundbreaking performance by young Madonna, who appeared on the top of an oversize wedding cake in what can only be described as head-to-toe Frederick’s of Hollywood.

  • Statement on the Dangers of Guardianship in Response to Britney Spears’S Testimony
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MEDIA CONTACT: Elizabeth Seaberry June 24, 2021 Communications Specialist Disability Rights Oregon Email: [email protected] Mobile: 503.444.0026 Statement on the dangers of guardianship in response to Britney Spears’s testimony Portland, Oregon—Today, Disability Rights Oregon Executive Director Jake Cornett issued the following statement in response to the Britney Spears’s testimony yesterday regarding her conservatorship. Statement from Jake Cornett, Executive Director, Disability Rights Oregon As Britney Spears’s case illustrates, one of the most restrictive things that can happen to a person is having a conservator or guardian be given the power to make crucial life decisions for them. Conservatorships or guardianships take away an individual’s right to make decisions about all aspects of their life, including where they live, what healthcare they get, and how they spend their time and money. Alarmingly, these enormous changes can be made while the person has little to no voice in the process or the chance to object. And conservatorships or guardianships can last a lifetime. Conservatorships and guardianships should be used as little as possible and truly as a last resort. Instead, less restrictive alternatives should be used, alternatives that allow a person to retain as much autonomy over their own life and independence as possible. Whether under conservatorship or guardianship or not, people with disabilities should have optimal freedom, independence, and the basic right to live the life that they choose

  • Adele and 'Body Image'
Adele and ‘Body Image’: Here we have an Ipad displaying a common view of body image that adolescents encounter, which is negative and destructive to self-esteem. We offer, instead, an image of Adele and a quote that is both positive and relatable. Adele presents a happy, healthy body image, one that is not necessarily mainstream. • According to an ongoing study funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, in a survey of 9 and 10 year old girls, 40% have tried to lose weight. • In a study on 10-year-old fifth graders, both girls and boys told researchers they were dissatisfied with their own bodies after watching a music video by Britney Spears or a clip from the TV show "Friends". • A 1996 study found that the amount of time adolescents spend watch soap operas, movies and music videos directly affects their perception of the human body. • One study reports that at age thirteen, 53% of American girls are "unhappy with their bodies." This percentage typically increases to 78% by the time these girls reach seventeen years old. Source: National Institute on Media and the Family A Kaiser Foundation study by Nancy Signorielli found that: In movies, particularly, but also in television shows and the accompanying commercials, women's and girls' appearance is frequently commented on. 58% of female characters in movies had comments made about their appearance. 28% of female characters in television shows and 26 percent of the female models in the accompanying commercials had comments made regarding their image. Mens' and boys' appearance is talked about significantly less often in all three media: a quarter (24%) of male characters in the movies, and 10 percent and 7 percent, respectively, in television shows and commercials.

  • Who Run the World? Stans..Pages
WHO RUN THE WORLD? STANS. by Kevin Mernin and! Liam Schaefer “It's their prolific nature that both creates and procures what will later be perceived as the ‘kingdom.’ So, the real truth about Lady Gaga fans lies in this sentiment: They are the kings. They are the queens. They write the history of the kingdom, while I am something of a devoted Jester.” ! Lady Gaga, Manifesto of Little Monsters Little Monsters, Lady Gaga’s rabble of devoted fans, are not the first of their kind. But they are the most visible example of stan culture. Derived from the Eminem song of the same name, the term stan indicates a “stalker fan.” However, rather than a negative, the !designation of stan is a point of pride for members of the community. Stans not only claim a particular diva as their own, as their icon, but they take a genuine stake in that artist’s success. They’re listening to music, monitoring album sales and chart positions, touting critical praise and accolades, scrutinizing interviews and public appearances, memorizing choreography and generating millions of hours worth of tribute content on the internet. They take it upon themselves to proselytize to the unconverted and defend against the ignorant. Their divas are their figure heads, their deities, and as Lady Gaga implies, the divas are really just a conduit for the stans own imagination. In reality the stans are the world-builders - they can do what they want with her body. ! Little Monsters are a testament to the impact STAN: an overzealous and overly devoted and creative output an organized, unified fan of a particular pop diva.

  • Madonna and Tony Ward in Justify My Love (1990)
MADONNA: REBEL WITH A CAUSE? DUYEN PHAM COMMENTARY: NEHA BAGCHI RESPONSE: DUYEN PHAM Madonna and Tony Ward in Justify My Love (1990). Music is one of the most universally accessible forms of artistic expression and interpretation. It has the ability to transcend language and cultural barriers. Unlike fine literature or classic paintings, one need not possess prior schooling or a high place in society to experience or appreciate even most classical music. Pop music is, by its very nature, the most accessible genre of musical aestheticism. It is produced with the tastes of society in mind and is thus devoured by the populace, whose appetite for catchy beats seems insatiable. Madonna, with a career spanning two decades of number-one selling albums, has not only been the most successful artist in satisfying the public’s hunger for pop music, but—to both those who love her and those who love to hate her—the most meaningful. To fans, she signifies a refreshingly new breed of feminism; to critics, a social disease that gnaws away at the moral fiber holding society together—one that must be eradicated. Particularly through her practices of “gender bending,” Madonna has become the world’s biggest and most socially significant pop icon, as well as the most controversial. She dares to 75 use the tools that were intended by the patriarchy for domination to defy and transgress the norms instilled by that elite class. Madonna is a rebel with a cause. Madonna was born into the realm of American pop culture in the 1980s, alongside the launch of Music Television (MTV) in 1981.

  • So You've Been Musically Shamed
WILLIAM CHENG Dartmouth College Email: [email protected] So You’ve Been Musically Shamed ABSTRACT In July 2014, an anonymous source leaked the raw audio of Britney Spears’s confessional ballad “Alien.” Haters pounced on this star’s denuded voice, gleefully seizing on the viral artifact as a smoking gun for Spears’s deficits and for the pop industry’s artistic fakeries more broadly. My paper situates this flashpoint of Spears-shaming within late-capitalist archives of public humiliation, cyberleaks, and the paternalistic scrutiny of women’s bodies and voices. KEYWORDS: critical theory, media studies, popular music A marketplace has emerged where public humiliation is a commodity and shame is an industry. How is the money made? Clicks. The more shame, the more clicks. – monica lewinsky1 “Poor Britney Spears” is not the beginning of a sentence you hear often uttered in my household. – tony hoagland, “poor britney spears,” beginning of the poem2 In the summer of 2014, the internet sprang a musical leak. Suddenly circulating on YouTube was a video featuring the allegedly raw, non-Auto-Tuned sounds of Brit- 3 ney Spears singing her new album track “Alien.” Spears’s voice in this recording was noticeably off-key and off-kilter, like some abject artifact meant to be overwritten, for- gotten, abandoned on the cutting room floor. In the video’s comment threads, view- ers’ strident pronouncements of aching ears and melting brains swirled in a chorus of mockery. Haters pounced on the star’s denuded voice and offered it as airtight 1.
