The Florida Reading Association’s Board of Directors welcomes you to our 49 th annual conference, Reading…Unlocking Hidden Treasures.

Evan Lefsky has served as the General Conference Chair for 2011. He has worked diligently to create a program full of high quality and varied professional development opportunities. Featured Strands for this year include Common Core, Literacy Coaching, Literacy Leadership, Response to Intervention, and Technology. Additionally, we have excellent opportunities to learn from leaders in our field as they speak in the General Sessions and Featured Speakers Sessions.

The Florida Reading Association invites you to learn more about each of our standing committees: Administrative, Conference, Council Development, Governmental Relations, Literacy Projects, Membership, Publications/Studies & Research, and Publicity. One focus of the organization for this year is to provide more information on what takes place throughout the year within each of the committees. We are working together to create opportunities for you to get involved in the areas of your specific interest and add to your professional development. Participants will K-5 learn how to actively engage students in meaningful writing using the brains natural tendencies. Participants will learn how to actively engage students in nonfiction writing using the brains natural functioning and tendencies through personal, meaningful connections to ideas and text. Each participant will leave with a variety of tools to support and instruct writing in their classrooms tomorrow.

Learning is NOT a Spectator Sport: Engage Students 9 Speaker: Jane Feber 3:00 – 5:45pm Suwannee 16 Engage and excite all learners with differentiated lessons! This unique institute will provide 3-12 before, during, and after reading strategies where students work at the application level. Activities presented allow students to analyze, create, debate, and present. Strategies presented will allow students to creatively respond to both fiction and nonfiction and learn vocabulary so that it sticks. This session is not for spectators. Come and get involved. Make it, take it, and be ready to implement it.

10 Developing and Implementing a Schoolwide Literacy Action Plan 3:00 – 5:45pm Speakers: Judith Irvin Suwannee 14 6-12 Based on work described in Taking Action on Adolescent Literacy: An Implementation Guide for School Leaders and Taking the Lead on Adolescent Literacy: Action Steps for Schoolwide Success, Dr. Irvin will present a five stage process to develop, implement, and monitor a literacy action plan for a middle or high school. Examples of successful implementation will be presented at each stage and a rubric for assessing a school on Literacy Across the Content Areas will be shared.

Revisiting the Continuum of Coaching 11 Speaker: Enrique Puig 3:00 – 5:45pm Suwannee 12 With the advent of lesson study, professional learning communities, and RtI2, the role of the K-12 literacy coach is making forward shifts and being redefined. In this interactive institute, participants will engage in an intellectual conversation within a solution-seeking environment to arrive at a variety of potential responses to challenges at the school and district level. Participants will leave with a revised Continuum of Coaching and a template for a year-long in-service plan for teacher.

Janice F. Almasi, Ph.D. is a former elementary school teacher and reading specialist and is currently the Carol Lee Robertson Endowed Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Kentucky. Her research has been acknowledged with several awards and has examined the contexts in which children learn from text, particularly in terms of strategic processes and peer discussion environments. She is currently a co-principal investigator on the evaluation of Kentucky’s Striving Readers project. She has published several books and her research has been published in journals such as: Reading Research Quarterly , Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Literacy Research , Elementary School Journal , and Educational Psychologist . She is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Literacy Research Association and is a former member of the IRA Board of Directors.

Participants in this session will experience vocabulary instructional ideas that utilize all modalities of learning to actively engage learners in language.

Central to the Common Core State Standards is students’ increasingly capacity to read complex texts. This presentation begins by considering the central content and strategies of proficient reading. It then moves to showing how this foundation supports increasing capacity with complex text.

Sponsored by Pearson Elfrieda (Freddy) H. Hiebert is President and CEO of TextProject, Inc., a not-for-profit aimed at increasing students’ reading levels through appropriate texts and a Research Associate at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Dr. Hiebert has published well over 150 book chapters, articles in journals, and books on topics of reading development and instruction. She received the William S. Gray award from the International Reading Association for outstanding contributions to the field of reading and is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. Her model of text difficulty, TExT, has been used to create numerous instructional materials, including Summer Reads and Talking Points for Kids (both available for free at textproject.org) and QuickReads (Pearson).

Hiller, K-2 Out-of-Door Academy 3-5 College This textual analysis examines constructions of gender in Caldecott Medal-winning pictures books Beginning Level 1938-2010, extending previous research by exploring ways female, male, and ungendered characters Teacher are depicted in these texts.

There, he discovered his medium of

preference was watercolor. During his four years at Temple, Lewis majored in Graphic Design and Illustration and art

education. After graduating, he taught art in public schools for twelve years. Presently, Lewis teaches at the University of Arts in Philadelphia.

In 1992, E.B. began painting illustrations for the book, Fire On The Mountain and his career as an “Artistrator” was launched. To date E.B. Lewis has illustrated over 50 picture books and has received numerous awards including:

Adrian Fogelin is the daughter of fiction writer, Maria Bontempi Fogelin, who introduced her to the writing life by filling her childhood with books, stories, and stacks of manuscript pages—all in the editing stage. Adrian has had many careers on her way to becoming a children’s book author. She has worked as a librarian, art teacher, and even a zoo illustrator, all of which give her plenty to write about.

The text and the illustrations tend to get all the attention, but the design of a book can have as much impact on how its story is told. Using examples from the classic Where the Wild Things Are and his own story, The Lion's Share, Matt will show how the size and shape of a book, its organization, and the layout of information on the pages can have a profound, even subliminal effect on the way the reader absorbs the story.

Students are able to remember the lesson since they are motivated by the costume that is aligned with the lesson. We all know that students are able to stay focused while they watch television or while they enjoy their favorite cartoons. Why not merge that concept to their daily instruction. If we are able to maintain and attract their attention, we can capitalize on the delivery of the lesson. These lessons are presented during morning announcements and throughout the day many of the students will approach my administrators and I to share what they have learned. They are able to remember the lessons throughout the school year and often reflect on their favorite ones.

Carole Fiore served as a school librarian with the School District of Philadelphia from 1969 through 1982. After moving to Florida in 1982, she served as a children’s and young adult services librarian in various public libraries in Florida, and was the Youth Services Consultant with the State Library of Florida from 1990 through 2006. While at the State Library of Florida, she initiated the Born to Read Program and brought Prime Time Family Reading Time to Florida. Carole also taught children’s literature at the University of Tampa and Florida State University. She opened her own independent consulting firm, Training and Library Consulting, in 2006 and has assisted public and school libraries improve their programs, written and evaluated grants and long range plans, and has presented numerous workshops and seminars across the US and in England, including making a presentation about Born to Read at a White House Conference on Hispanic Education. Fiore recently spoke at a conference at Florida State University on the Future of the Book. Fiore has served on the many book award committees, including the Newbery Award Committee, the Caldecott Award Committee, the very first Theodore Seuss Geisel Award Committee, the Florida Book Award Children’s Jury, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award Committee, and currently serves as the chair of the 2012 Theodore Seuss Geisel Award Committee and the Executive Committee for the Florida Book Awards.

Dick Allington is Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee. Dick is a past-president of the International Reading Association and the literacy Research Association. He is the author of over 150 articles and several books. His most recent books are What Really Matters for Struggling Readers, What Really Matters in Response to Intervention both published by Pearson Allyn Bacon and the Handbook of Reading Disability Research co-edited with Anne McGill- Franzen and published by Routledge.
