This book is intended to serve as a teaser of The Fall of Man, a four-part conspiracy adventure for 7th Sea, second edition. This free book allows curious groups to get a peek to what sort of story this game would be exploring. Given the overall story is intended to be a Conspiracy Adventure, and conspiracies work best when there is a level of mystery and intrigue, this book will avoid spoiling the major portions of the adventure. If you find yourself intrigued by the contents, do consider getting the four books. And do let me know how the games turn out! But beyond the gardens and spires of the Vaticine City and its wide reach are secrets and hidden organizations that would rather all embraced a narrative of their own devising. And while the faithful seek for ways to emulate and attain the ideals expected for one to be welcomed at Heaven’s gates, there are priests and other agents of the Church who abuse their titles and twist the Prophet’s message for their own. What seemingly begins as a mystery murder becomes the first clue to a greater conspiracy that stains the reputation of the Vaticine Church. This Mystery Adventure is not your typical dungeon crawl. Nor is this your usual high-seas swashbuckling adventure. This is a four-part Mystery Adventure patterned after the likes of books such as Umberto Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum, Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, Richard Ben Sapir’s Quest, and Katherine Neville’s The Eight. For groups interested in exploring such a story, I hope you will enjoy the adventure I have painstakingly crafted for you. While there are truths in the faith, there are key facts which have been obscured to support a version of the faith which the Covenant prefers. A version which places their own people as the chosen people of Theus and condemns their enemies to perpetual suffering in the Abyss. To understand the Covenant’s machinations requires one to understand first what truly transpired in history. And what the Covenant did to twist the “facts” to their liking.

Swanson, who has been director of the Springville Art Museum in Utah since 1980 and who has published extensively in art historical topics, applies his skills to a different body of material in this impressive, large- format volume of over five hundred pages. The author refers to his own work as a “scattershot miscellany of ran- dom thoughts” (411). While some may find in this statement a self-effacing motif, most readers will acknowledge that the phrase provides a fair assess- ment of this unusual project.

Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 2004. xiv, 463 pp. $27.95 (cloth); $16.95 (paper). As I write this review, Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh, authors (along with Henry Lincoln) of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (New York: Random House, 1982), are suing Dan Brown. Brown, they claim, stole the framework for the best-selling Da Vinci Code from their book. Thus far, Brown has denied the charges, emphasizing the rigor of his own independent research and his lack of familiarity with The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. It seems likely that his story will change: at the moment, Brown’s “well-thumbed” and heavily annotated copy of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail is being examined in court (Hugh Davies, “Dan Brown and Mystery of the Well-Thumbed Paperback,” March 15, 2006; available at www.telegraph.co.uk/news). At the very least, Brown will probably have to admit that his assertions about his own research were exaggerated. The irony about Baigent and Leigh’s claims is that The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail has been dismissed as poorly researched fantasy. As Barber puts it, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail is “a text which pro- ceeds by innuendo, not by refutable scholarly debate” (p. 310).     Re-doing Da Vinci: Appropriation and Misappropriation of Religious History in Conspiracy Fiction Andrew Wearring As I am sure many reviews of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code have observed, it is a book which has, for better or worse, been the subject of much, often heated, discussion and debate. It has created a veritable industry of supposedly serious works that purport to debunk or affirm the various claims made within its pages: Secrets of the Da Vinci Code, Cracking the Da Vinci Code, Breaking the Da Vinci Code, or even The Da Vinci Deception and The Da Vinci Con.1 Brown’s claims have evidently been something of a revelation for the majority of his readers, and clearly they have been left wanting more. Its well- established place at the top of bestseller lists around the world is testament to its popularity, and few would question the influence it has had on its readers. But what exactly is it that has struck such a chord with readers? To briefly summarise, The Da Vinci Code claims: that Jesus was fully mortal; that he married Mary Magdalene and had children by her (as represented by the allegory of the Holy Grail: chalice = womb; blood = bloodline); that his descendents survived in France, that the Catholic Church has suppressed this information since its inception and that Jesus’ divinity was ‘decided by a vote,’ with motivations that were purely political. These claims, while no doubt sensational for many, are hardly new. Strangely enough, this is something Brown seems to want to reiterate again and again.

    STATEMENT DH028 Holy Blood, Holy Grail If someone were to sit down and write a book that discussed the life of Jesus and completely disregarded the accepted historical material available about His Life, what would be the result? No doubt it would be something along the lines of the new book written by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln entitled Holy Blood, Holy Grail. Lincoln, a writer and television producer for the BBC in England; Leigh, a novelist and Ph.D.; and Baigent, a sometime teacher with a degree in psychology have pooled their talents to produce a new book that will undoubtedly bring them some measure of notoriety. The book, the outgrowth of research for a series of specials for BBC television, has been creating controversy both locally and abroad. The tale begins with the account of a poor French priest in the small, somewhat obscure French village of Rennes -le-Chateau. In 1891, while restoring the church, this little clergyman came across some strange parchments. Dated fro m the 13th, 17th, and 18th Centuries, these parchments are the beginnings of a historical detective story, not leading to the usual who done it,’’ but, ultimately, to an international “what is it?’’ And, what it is, is a supersecretive politico-religious order called The Priory of Sion. The basic theory of the book is simple. The authors allege that Jesus was a well - to-do Jewish opportunist who had a legitimate claim to the Jewish throne. Either from a scientific perspective, or from presenting convincing evidence to support a claim. Every single religion and non- religious beliefs are largely based on myth, so how one can live their lives, justifying their actions and reactions to life when the platform they stand on has little to no historical value just simply puzzles me. Other than the material on the zealot movement in Jewish culture, the book is pretty much boring, retreading ground that has already been covered and not really adding anything new.
