Volume 2. 2018 (pp 5- 12) Influence of Demographic Variables on Knowledge of Hypertension Among Residents of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State Itaa Patience & E. I. Achalu Department of Community Health, Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology, Port Harcourt. Abstract Hypertension is a major public health problem in Nigeria and Rivers State is not an exception. Statistics on hypertension in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State show that the number of cases reported monthly for treatment at health facilities from January 2014 - March 2016 is on the increase. The study investigated knowledge of risk factors of high blood pressure and prevention of hypertension as well as influence of selected demographic variables. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. A sample size of 2,324 respondents was sampled using purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was analyzed using the simple percentage, mean score, Chi-square, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. Results revealed an adequate knowledge of high blood pressure among the respondents. Also, there was a significant difference on the level of knowledge of hypertension based on gender, age, level of education and occupation. However, the practice towards prevention of hypertension was poor. The study recommended that the Nigerian government should provide hypertension education programme to improve knowledge on prevention and early detection and management of hypertension. Keywords: knowledge, demographic variables, hypertension, residents. Introduction Every day, thousands of people die all over the world due to high blood pressure. Approximately 86 million adults (34%) in the United State are affected by hypertension, which is defined as the systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 140 mmHg or more or a diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 90mmHg or more. It is a major risk factor for stroke myocardial infarction, vascular, diseases, and chronic kidney diseases (American Heart Association, 2018). According to the World Health Organization (2017), hypertension also known as high blood pressure is a condition in which blood has persistently raised pressure especially in cases of adult patients older than 60 years. In many countries, 50% of individuals in this age group have hypertension. Studies have shown that hypertension contributes to millions of deaths per year all over the world (WHO, 2017). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the prevalence of hypertension is highest in the African region at 46% of adults aged 25 years and above, while the lowest was found in the American region (Ajaji, 2016). The global burden of hypertension and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is rapidly on the increase and the African continent seems to be the most affected region in the world. Ekpo 2 1 Department of History & International Studies, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria 2 Peace and Conflict Studies Programme, Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan, Ibadan – Nigeria Abstract This paper submits that there exist multiple dimensions through which herdsmen attack in Nigeria could be perceived. Though traditionally seen as violence anchored on resource conflict, the attacks inhibit acts of terror and in some instances, religious extremism. Also, the word farming was substituted for the phrase “farming communities” because victims of herdsmen attacks are all not farmers. Importantly, this paper emphasizes the word “herdsmen” in place of the popular and ethnically charged phrase “Fulani- herdsmen” because, although predominantly of Fulani stock, not all herdsmen are ethnic Fulani. There is a perception that the rising state of these attacks is nothing other than a conspiracy by some influential forces within the country, and in the opinion of others the attacks embeds acts of criminality. This paper argues that beyond the perception of resource conflict, issues of terrorism, religious extremism, conspiracies and criminality are but new perspectives with which herdsmen attacks in Nigeria could be understood; and within these perspectives lie various security challenges that require multiple strategic solutions. The researchers consulted several secondary and tertiary sources, especially newspaper reports. ECWA’s heartland is in Northern Nigeria, an area whose substantial Christian population is often ignored by scholars.
