Charlotte needed second-half comebacks in wins over North Texas, UTEP and Marshall and scored the game-winning TD in the fourth quarter of each. In the decisive fourth quarters, they outscored the Mean Green, Miners and Herd, 39-3. WELCOME BACK Charlotte’s best-ever recruiting class got an additional bump by the return of three key players for an additional year. Both DE Tyriq Harris, who has been a starter for three seasons, and CB Nafees Lyon, who started each of the last two years, received NCAA waivers to come back for a sixth season. R-Sr. S Ben DeLuca, another three-year starter, took his red-shirt season after playing in two games in 2019 before being injured. Harris and DeLuca are among the 49ers’ four team captains.

SEASON-OPENER AT APP STATE Charlotte either led or was within one score until the nationally-ranked Mountaineers’ final touchdown with under two minutes to play. Charlotte forced three turnovers and its special teams proved special in keeping pace: blocking a 34-yard field goal attempt (Damon Weldon Jr), scoring on a 97-yard kickoff return (Aaron McAllister) and kicking a 49-yard field goal (Jonathan Cruz) in sloppy conditions.

REYNOLDS BREAKTHROUGH SEASON R-Jr. QB Chris Reynolds set a school record with 22 passing TDs, put up the second-most passing yards in school history (2,564), led C- USA with a school-record 153.60 passing efficiency and was the 49ers second-leading rusher with 791 yards, the most ever by a 49ers quarterback. He had five games with 200+ passing yards and twice set school FBS records for passing yards (336 v. NT; 354 at UTEP) and total offense (432 v. NT; 445 at UTEP). He had two 100-yard rushing games (high of 145 vs. Marshall) and rushed for 70+ six times, including 90+ in each game during the five-game win streak. He completed 62.2% of his passes (181-291), second only to the school- record (64.9) he set in 2018. He ranked 2nd in C-USA and in the FBS top 15 in yds/att. (8.81, 12th FBS) and yds/comp. (14.17, 13th FBS).

HAVOC IN THE BACKFIELD Led by a pair of defensive bookends, Charlotte set school records for sacks (36) and TFL (86) in 2019. Back from that unit is Jr. DE Mar- kees Watts (9.5 sacks; 13.0 TFL) who ranked 4th in C-USA in sacks and 12th in TFL as a sophomore. Running mate Alex Highsmith, who led the league with 21.5 TFL and 14.0 sacks, has moved on to the Pittsburgh Steelers (3rd rd. draft pick) but three-year starter Tyriq Harris is set to move into the open slot after starting his previous three playing seasons.

OFFENSIVE OUTPUT In 2019, Charlotte led C-USA in rushing and ranked in the top four in passing efficiency, TOP, red zone offense and scoring. The 49ers rushed for 200+ eight times and scored 40+ points three times. Offensive Category Stat C-USA rank FBS rank Rushing Off. 203.3 1st 30th Passing efficiency 148.63 2nd 30th Time of Possession 31:59 3rd 25th Red Zone Offense .884 3rd 35th Scoring Off. 29.8 4th 60th OF NOTE: The school did have a football team from 1946-48. A two-year institution that operated as a night school at the time, the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC) was nicknamed the “Owls”. CCUNC was a temporary institution designed to handle the influx of servicemen returning from the war. The school, which would go on to become Charlotte College and eventually UNC Charlotte, became a permanent fixture in 1949 (thus the 49ers nickname). MOST WINS Charlotte posted the most wins (7) in school history. Prior to this season, Charlotte had three five-wins season (2013, 2014, 2018).

Cornerback Nafees Lyon ESPN.com Daj’eun Gibson Def. Fresh of Year WE WILL! ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM; PASSION AND POSITIVITY Head coach Will Healy received the 2017 Eddie Robinson National FCS Coach of the Year Award after Austin Peay snapped a 29-game losing streak on its way to an 8-4 record. In his first season with the 49ers, he led Charlotte to its first winning record and first bowl bid. He’s known for the energy and enthusiasm, passion and positivity that he brings to the team’s culture. Some of the mantras he espouses: Fun: Celebrate Success! He encourages dancing during practice and celebra- tions after big plays. He introduced the “Dunk Can” to the defense to cel- ebrate takeways and he and his staff are eager to join in as teammates race down the field to celebrate a touchdown. After victories, the 49ers lockerroom was converted into “Club Lit”, complete with DJ, flashing lights and loud music. Access: Healy prefers to open his practices to any and all fans of the program. He wants the community to see his team, to meet his team and to get to know his team. The better they know the Niners, he deduces, the more likely they are to come out and support the Niners. After practice, prior to the pandemic, his team would take time to talk with fans and shake hands. Similarly, after wins, the team circled the stadium thanking fans for their support. Family: He welcomes the families of his staff to practice and the facility. He wants them around. He has conducted more than one interview with Eli on his shoulders or Wynn in his arms. WILL HEALY HEAD COACH 2nd Season (Richmond, 2008)

The sitting area in Will Healy’s office is lit up by two lamps. Converted tro- phies, really. One is an MVP trophy presented by the Atlanta Touchdown Club to the top player in the Southeastern Conference. The other is for the SEC’s Most Valuable Offensive Lineman, presented by the Birmingham TD Club. Both were presented in 1948. And both were awarded to Healy’s grandfather, Bill Healy, an all-America tackle at Georgia Tech. For Healy, football is a family affair. His father, uncle and grandad all played at Georgia Tech. Another uncle played at Vanderbilt and another uncle at The Citadel. He brought those family ties with him to Charlotte. “I come from a football family,” Healy explains. “I grew up around the game.” He welcomes family members: his own, his assistants’, his staff’s to make the Rose Football Center their home away from home. In addition to the two lamps and, of course, several family pictures, Healy also has images of players he has recruited who are “unbeliev- able examples of why you coach.” A good mix of reminders of those who have had an impact on his life, and those whose lives he has impacted. Through football. “My Mom and Dad missed one college football game and I didn’t play a whole lot,” Healy notes. “I have unbelievably supportive parents and family but I still have coaches who have made a tremendous impact. We have a lot of players who don’t have that structure and stability. If I had coaches that made that big of an impact in my life, imagine the opportunity for me to make an impact for guys who don’t have that in their lives.” And while coaching is often about wins and losses, game-winning drives and third-down stops, Healy knows there can and should be another level. “If we are doing it the way I would like, it has so much more to do with who I want them to be after football than it does with winning foot- ball games,” Healy said. “Sometime you lose sight of that. We pride ourselves on teaching life lessons that transcend the game of football. I love trying to make an impact and a difference. I love having the opportunity to provide consistency, love and discipline to some guys 2017 Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year Will who need it, want it, crave it and will be better for it.” Healy celebrates during his first season at the helm of the 49ers. 2020 CHARLOTTE 49ERS COACHES
