National Tour Stops at Starlight Theatre ‘Bodyguard’ national tour stops at Starlight Theatre U.S. NATIONAL TOUR OF THE BODYGUARD MAKES KC DEBUT WITH R&B SUPERSTAR DEBORAH COX IN LEAD ROLE Starlight Theatre Presents Romantic Thriller Musical on August 8-13 KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Bodyguard, a triumphant success in London’s West End, will make its Kansas City debut at Starlight Theatre on August 8-13. The national touring production is the sixth show of Starlight’s 67th Broadway season and the third of three brand-new musicals lighting up the Starlight night this summer. Grammy® Award-nominated, multi-platinum R&B/pop recording artist and film/TV actress Deborah Cox stars as Rachel Marron. Cox made her Broadway debut as the lead inAida and most recently starred as Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde. In the role of bodyguard Frank Farmer is television star Judson Mills. Since starting his acting career with a three-year stint in “As the World Turns,” Mills has had numerous guest and starring roles on TV series ranging from “Law and Order” and “The X Files” to “Walker, Texas Ranger.” He has also appeared in more than 20 feature films, including the Academy Award-nominated Gods and Monsters. Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar-nominated Warner Bros. film and adapted by Academy Award-winner (Birdman) Alexander Dinelaris, The Bodyguard had its world premiere Dec. 5, 2012, at London’s Adelphi Theatre. It was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Best Set Design, and it won Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards. The production in January 2017 completed a return run in the West End after a sold-out 16-month tour throughout the U.K. and Ireland. The Bodyguard’s story is a romantic thriller. Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge, but what they don’t expect is to fall in love. The musical’s score features a host of hits, including “So Emotional,” “One Moment in Time,” “Saving All My Love,” “Run to You,” “I Have Nothing,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and one of the biggest-selling songs of all time, “I Will Always Love You.” “This show is pure entertainment and all about the songs audiences love,” said Rich Baker, Starlight President and CEO. “If you liked the movie, you’ll love the musical. And, in my opinion, Deborah Cox’s voice is the closest thing you’ll find to the original!” The Bodyguard’s creative team is led by British director Thea Sharrock, choreographer Karen Bruce, set and costume designer Tim Hatley, lighting designer Mark Henderson, sound designer Richard Brooker and video design by Duncan McLean. Orchestrations are by Chris Egan, musical supervision by Richard Beadle and production musical supervision by Mike Dixon. Musical director Matthew Smedal conducts the show’s live orchestra. Joining Cox and Mills in the principal cast are Alex Corrado (Gotham, Hannibal) as Tony Scibelli, Rachel’s personal security guard; Jarid Faubel (Black & White, X-Men: First Class) as FBI agent Ray Court; Charles Gray (Broadway: The Color Purple, Tour: The Lion King) as manager Bill Devaney; Jonathan Hadley (Broadway: Jersey Boys, A Class Act) as publicist Sy Spector; Jorge Paniagua (Regional:The Full Monty, Oregon Shakespeare Festival) as the Stalker; Jasmin Richardson (Tour: Memphis, Dreamgirls) as Rachel’s sister Nicki Marron; and Douglas Baldeo (Broadway:Kinky Boots, Tour: Motown) and Kevelin B. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

SHREK THE MUSICAL is an entirely new musical based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek!, as well as the Oscar® winning DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, the first chapter of the Shrek movie series. SHREK THE MUSICAL looks backwards at all the fairy tale traditions we grew up on: a hero (a big, green, ill-tempered ogre), a beautiful princess (who is not all she appears to be), and a dastardly villain (with some obvious shortcomings) and takes great fun turning all their storytelling conventions upside-down and inside-out (and on their ear). “How did the musical come about?” Sam Mendes, the British director and producer, was a big fan of the first film, and he suggested the idea of creating a musical to DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg, around the time the second film was in production. Like many of the buildings that are now part of our heritage, Gran Vía avenue did not exist yet, but the city was already starting to take on its present-day appearance. On 23 April 1818, the first stone was laid for what would become theTeatro Real, the city’s new opera house. This year the iconic building is celebrating its bicentenary, and it’s doing so in style, revisiting some of the classics in its regular repertoire, like Aida, and staging major premieres such as Dead Man Walking -many will remember the film version- and Street Scene. The Prado Museum will also commemorate its two-hundredth anniversary in 2019, although the celebrations will officially kick off at the end of 2018. Fortuny and Rubens are two of the masters whose works will be featured in temporary exhibitions at the museum which was originally built to house the Royal Cabinet of Natural History. They won’t be the only artists Madrid will pay tribute to this year, however, as the 2018 exhibitions calendar will feature shows with artworks by Andy Warhol, Toulouse-Lautrec, Giacometti, Sorolla, Vasarely and Monet. How awesome was that with this super team! Theatre conversions 2017 started well with control conversions to SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level) classification for the Diligentia in The Hague, Theater De Lampegiet in Veenendaal, Parkstad Limburg Theaters in Kerkrade, Theater Junushoff in move Wageningen, the Beatrix Theater in Utrecht and the Rabotheater Hengelo.
